Church In The Philippines Stirred To Action By Hong Kong?S Hiv/Aids Project On Anglican Alliance Trip

Father Herbert Fadfriquela Jr of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente described this week how an Anglican Alliance sponsored visit to St John?s Cathedral in Hong Kong has paved the way for a new ministry in HIV and AIDs prevention in the Philippines.

The visit, which took place last November, was one of a series of regional meetings to decide the future priorities of the Alliance. It included a study day learning about St John?s innovative outreach projects, which include a HIV education centre and a mission for migrant workers.

Inspired by witnessing the work of the St. John's Cathedral HIV Education Centre, Father Herbert put forward a vision of a similar project in the Philippines to Anglican agency Primates World Relief and Development Fund, who also attended the Alliance meeting and will provide funding for the project.

According to Father Herbert, the Executive Director of the Iglesia Filipina Independiente's regional office for development in Cebu, the church in Hong Kong?s ?work and its significant contribution to address the issues and concerns about HIV and AIDS has inspired me to engage our office in similar activity here in Cebu City and contribute to the worldwide efforts of prevention if not eradication of HIV and AIDs?.

The HIV Education Centre in Hong Kong was the first, and is so far the only, faith-based organization to undertake the AIDS ministry there. It was founded in 1995 and aims to prevent the spread of HIV and AIDs through targeted educational programmes.

The Iglesia Filipina Independiente has a very close working relationship with the Episcopal Church in the Philippines, who invited their colleagues on the Hong Kong visit. The church has a long history of supporting marginalised people and taking a stand against oppression, including working in humanitarian relief and social development and running a special project supporting human rights defenders.

FIFA names 2018 World Cup venues in Russia

Associated Press Sports

updated 2:26 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

MOSCOW (AP) -Three stadiums in Moscow will host some 2018 World Cup games, among the dozen arenas finalized by FIFA on Saturday for the first cup in Russia.

The centerpiece will be Moscow's 89,000-seat Luzhniki Stadium, which hosted the Champions League final in 2008. Work on redeveloping it is due for completion in 2016.

Among the 11 cities to host matches are St. Petersburg, and the Black Sea city of Sochi to the south.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter said at the venue announcement that Russia's preparations were ahead of schedule.

Gene that causes a form of deafness discovered

ScienceDaily (Sep. 30, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center have found a new genetic mutation responsible for deafness and hearing loss associated with Usher syndrome type 1.

These findings, published in the Sept. 30 advance online edition of the journal Nature Genetics, could help researchers develop new therapeutic targets for those at risk for this syndrome.

Partners in the study included the National Institute on Deafness and other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Kentucky.

Usher syndrome is a genetic defect that causes deafness, night-blindness and a loss of peripheral vision through the progressive degeneration of the retina.

"In this study, researchers were able to pinpoint the gene which caused deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 as well as deafness that is not associated with the syndrome through the genetic analysis of 57 humans from Pakistan and Turkey," says Zubair Ahmed, PhD, assistant professor of ophthalmology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is the lead investigator on this study.

Ahmed says that a protein, called CIB2, which binds to calcium within a cell, is associated with deafness in Usher syndrome type 1 and non-syndromic hearing loss.

"To date, mutations affecting CIB2 are the most common and prevalent genetic cause of non-syndromic hearing loss in Pakistan," he says. "However, we have also found another mutation of the protein that contributes to deafness in Turkish populations.

"In animal models, CIB2 is found in the mechanosensory stereocilia of the inner ear -- hair cells, which respond to fluid motion and allow hearing and balance, and in retinal photoreceptor cells, which convert light into electrical signals in the eye, making it possible to see," says Saima Riazuddin, PhD, assistant professor in UC's department of otolaryngology who conducts research at Cincinnati Children's and is co-lead investigator on the study.

Researchers found that CIB2 staining is often brighter at shorter row stereocilia tips than the neighboring stereocilia of a longer row, where it may be involved in calcium signaling that regulates mechano-electrical transduction, a process by which the ear converts mechanical energy -- or energy of motion -- into a form of energy that the brain can recognize as sound.

"With this knowledge, we are one step closer to understanding the mechanism of mechano-electrical transduction and possibly finding a genetic target to prevent non-syndromic deafness as well as that associated with Usher syndrome type 1," Ahmed says.

Other researchers involved in the study include Thomas Friedman, PhD, and Inna Belyantseva, MD, PhD, from the NIDCD; Suzanne Leal, PhD, and her team at Baylor; and Gregory Frolenkov, PhD, and his team at the University of Kentucky.

This study was funded by the NIDCD, the National Science Foundation and the Research to Prevent Blindness Foundation.

Nasser Hussain - Sharp, straight and to the point - Part 1 - Opinion ...

Nasser Hussain - Sharp, straight and to the point - Part 1 - Opinion

Since his retirement in 2004, Nasser Hussain of England had established himself as one of the most successful captains that the Poms had ever had in their history since Mike Brearley. His tenacious approach, and gutsy demeanor helped England stage a fight back in Test cricket after they were lost in the wilderness for the most part of the late 1990s. Unconvincing performances at home which included Ashes defeats, teams such as New Zealand coming up with upsets and a plethora of issues, such as injuries, was when Nasser Hussain was handed captaincy at a tender age. It was a decision that transformed a team which looked hapless, crippled and lacking intent, into an outfit that looked more confident, assured and craving for victory. Fittingly, he scored a century on the hallow turf of Lord's against New Zealand in his final game and won a memorable match for his team which was chasing 282 in the final innings. He roared out of the scene shortly after, with a blue print that is etched into cricket folklore. A great, had truly retired.

Since his retirement, Hussain became a Sky Sports commentator and it is fair to say that the Sky sports team is pleased to have him. He is nicknamed ?Nass? by his comrades such as Ian Botham, and since his inclusion, Hussain has become one of the most prudent, sensible and dryly humorous commentators that the world and the game of cricket has ever seen. His analysis about proceedings is almost always up to the mark and he seldom hesitates, while making any controversial remarks. Hussain, like Michael Holding of Jamaica, possesses an acute cricket sense and staunchly believes in being vociferous and vehement in his criticism of teams from time to time. Yet, the man is more than just a rational critique. He is a complete commentator, who hints at logical conclusions which are drawn from an array of different facts, historical knowledge and on ground realities, which concerns him, his team and international cricket as a whole.

Hussain?s tweak however is admirable to say the least. His presence in the commentary box almost gives a renewed vibe to English cricket, which is the ideal combination for David Gower?s smooth, erudite comments on air. He believes in understanding the game to the very core, and unlike many of his contemporaries, he shuns away from praising his team unnecessarily. A prime example was when England was blown over by South Africa in the Investec Test Series of 2012, where the victor would be crowned as the best side in Test cricket. England had succumbed to a 2-0 loss at the hands of the Proteas and Hussain was vocally critical of England?s performance on that tour, where he readily admitted that the Poms were truly outclassed by a better team, which oozed class and passion.

He is also known for his impartiality with regard to other teams, and would refrain from belittling any side that plays quality cricket. Hussain is known to burst into enthusiasm, whenever he sees teams like India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the West Indies and even Australia, playing well. The harshest of Hussain?s critics might hint at his South Asian background as one of the reasons for his impartiality, but the truth is that he is English in the truest essence of the word. Hussain had migrated to England from Madras in India, and played cricket for a country that he not only adopted but endorsed with his soul and mind. Yet unlike other players in his generation, Hussain did not need to work hard to establish himself as an Englishman, in contrast to say Kevin Pietersen, who had to bear the brunt of considerable scrutiny when he entered the English set up domestically, after he shunned away the controversial quota system in South Africa.?

Curl Your Bacon Before Baking for Crispy Bacon Tubes [Friday Fun]

Curl Your Bacon Before Baking for Crispy Bacon Tubes You may know that baking bacon is a great way to cook it up quickly and evenly, but for a little fun and flavor, the next time you bake it, why not season your bacon and twist it into spirals before baking? It should hold its shape while cooking, and when it comes out you'll have curly bacon straws?much more interesting than simple strips.

Over at The Wicked Noodle, in between professing her love for bacon and this tip, the author suggests spicing up your bacon with brown sugar and chipotle powder to give it a spicy-sweet kick. If you curl the bacon this way, that flavor will really stay with the end result, since it'll be on the inside while the bacon is cooking. She also notes that thicker cuts may be a problem here, so you might want to use an oven-safe skewer to twist the bacon around if you're using particularly thick strips. Even if you don't candy or spice up the bacon, it's a neat trick?not that we really need tricks to enjoy bacon.

Agriculture is the direct driver for worldwide deforestation

ScienceDaily (Sep. 25, 2012) ? A new synthesis on drivers of deforestation and forest degradation was published during the Bangkok climate change negotiations in September by researchers from Canada and from Wageningen University, Netherlands. The report stresses the importance of knowing what drives deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design and monitor effective REDD+ policies to halt it.

Agriculture is estimated to be the direct driver for around 80% of deforestation worldwide. In Latin America, commercial agriculture is the main direct driver, responsible for 2/3 of all cut forests, while in Africa and tropical Asia commercial agriculture and subsistence agriculture both account for one third of deforestation. Mining, infrastructure and urban expansion are important but less prominent drivers worldwide. It is concluded that economic growth based on the export of primary commodities and an increasing demand for timber and agricultural products in a globalizing economy are critical indirect drivers.

Degradation of forest means a decrease in quality of forest, and is in over 70% of cases caused by (commercial) timber extraction and logging activities in Latin America and tropical and sub-tropical Asia. In Africa, fuel wood collection, charcoal production, and, to a lesser extent, livestock grazing in forests are the most important drivers of degradation.

The synthesis report 'Drivers of Deforestation and Forest Degradation' sums up currently available knowledge from the literature on drivers, worldwide and by country, and gives recommendations to policymakers involved in the on-going international climate negotiations, as well as country-level plans and interventions. The viability of REDD+ depends on altering business-as-usual activity in sectors currently driving greenhouse gas emissions from forests, it is concluded. The report distinguishes between direct drivers, that directly cause deforestation and forest degradation, and indirect drivers, forces at the background such as changing market prices, population growth or policies and governance.

The report concludes it is important for forested tropical countries to regularly assess and monitor drivers of deforestation and forest degradation, in order to be able to design effective REDD+ policies. The types of drivers have great influence on the forest carbon impacts and the choice of data sources and methods used to measure them. Also, understanding forest change patterns and underlying causes are important for developing forest reference (emission) levels, necessary for REDD+ implementation.

Countries largely define REDD+ strategies and interventions to deal with national and local scale drivers, but face problems addressing international drivers and acknowledge that international pressure will increase. The report offers solutions for how countries can decouple economic growth from deforestation, investigating the range of options countries have to address drivers at various scales.

The report, was supported by the UK and Norwegian governments, is available at http://www.decc.gov.uk/assets/decc/11/tackling-climate-change/international-climate-change/6316-drivers-deforestation-report.pdf

A Handy List Of Home Improvement Ideas | Buy Property In Singapore

No matter what you?re attempting to do in life, knowing how to do it is a great point from which to start. Understanding the task at hand is extremely important to ensure your home improvement project goes smoothly. You don?t want to be stuck with a leaking roof or broken basement stair. The following tips will give you the knowledge you need to get started in home improvement.

Landscaping is a home improvement project you should consider. People look at the front of your home when they first see it, and this can leave a lasting impression. Keep your grass neat and tidy, and add a border of flowering plants and shrubs to add additional beauty and dimension to your yard.

TIP! One of the most fun projects that you can do for your home can actually involve your whole family, including children. A garden in your front yard goes a long way towards increasing the value of your house.

A great way to conserve energy while also keeping bugs out of your home, is to seal up any cracks in your home. Simply apply caulk to baseboards, around and inside windows, and any other places. Caulking these areas helps to keep cool air and heat from getting out.

Think small with your next home project and start with just one room. Rather than trying to do the entire house at one time, you can go room by room to save time and money. Before beginning any home improvement project, write out a detailed plan so you can keep a watch out for sales on the items you need. A good way to save money while improving your house is to plan ahead.

Unless a homeowner is just fixing a drain, it is critical that he make a list of all the materials that will be required to complete a proposed home improvement project. Many things can be bought in bulk which will save money. Many materials and equipment required in renovations also have long lead times. If they are not ordered in advance they can hold up the entire project.

TIP! A floor lamp can be a great addition to the room and free up valuable space on a nightstand or dresser. Floor versions are great because they can be easily moved to different locations.

Don?t be afraid to complain if your home improvements are not what you expected from your contractor. Begin with your contractor and let him know the portions of the contract you believe he has violated. If a talk does not seem to bring about a resolution then it may be time to put your concerns in a letter and send it to him through a registered letter. After that, you should call the consumer protection office in your area and see if they can help.

Purchase high-quality supplies and tools for an home improvement projects you are doing yourself. Purchasing high quality tools can be costly, but it is a very worthwhile investment. Better quality products survive wear and tear and last longer. Therefore, you should purchase quality tools that will last for a long time.

TIP! If you would like to save money by staying in your home while making improvements, work on one room at once. This will make it easier to live in your home, until it?s the bathroom! Think about staying with friends then.

When planning any home improvement project, it is important to consider how any unwanted debris will be disposed of. If you are doing any demolition, you will have rubbish that you need to get rid of. Before you actually start, you should make a place for it to go.

When you renovate a bathroom, it pays to make the bathroom handicap-accessible as part of the renovation project. This conversion can be done in stages if cost is a concern, and will save a lot of headache if you live in your current home until you die. When the time comes to put your home on the market, these renovations can add value to your home.

One of the most expensive things a homeowner can do is to replace the roof. Get a few estimates prior to getting a new roof and check all references for the companies you look at. Lots of choices in roofing materials exist today, such as metal roofing, lightweight tiles, composite shingles and conventional wood shakes. A contractor can help you make the right decision.

TIP! Adding big value to your home can be accomplished with even the smallest of improvements. If you?re looking to sell your house, then consider doing one or two small things.

The good thing about home projects is that they are relatively easy to do. Having the right information is, of course, an important part of a successful improvement. With the advice in the article above, you should be better prepared to meet your goal. Take the information learned and put it to use on your next renovation

Must Try Video Games For Everyone | ArticlePDQ.com

If you are purchasing a game for your child, look for one that allows several people to play together. Gaming can be a solitary activity. However, it is important to encourage your child to be social, and multiplayer games can do that. They allow siblings and friends to all sit down and laugh and compete with one another.

The best times to buy video games are during seasonal holidays. Retail stores and online platforms will generally hold sales around the winter holidays or during the middle of summer where new and used games will be sold at reduced prices. If you take advantage of these sales, you can get multiple games for the price of one new game that isn?t on sale.

If you spend a lot of time video gaming, but your girlfriend doesn?t, it could mean relationship trouble. Try different ways to help your girlfriend enjoy video gaming as much as you do. By converting your girlfriend to the world of video games, you will spend less time arguing and more time playing.

Trade in your old games at a video game store. You may not know this, but you can trade your old games to the video game store, and you can get cash or credit toward new games. Check with a few different stores so you can get the best deal on your games, though.

Rent before you buy! It is not uncommon to buy a new game, take it home and then play it only to realize that it is nowhere near the fun you thought it would be. It may not appeal to you in any number of ways. Rent it first and find out if it truly offers what you want.

A great resource for buying games is your local gaming store. The people who are employed at these stores are usually some of the most knowledgeable that you will find. Certain video game stores will only hire employees who own every console gaming system available. They even could have specialists who play online games, computer games, and console games.

Become aware of the recent trends in gaming to take advantage of the technological innovations that are out on the market today. The new Wii controller has a motion sensor, which is something that you may want to experience in your game play. Always be on the lookout for new trends to optimize your gaming experience.

Give the in-game music a chance. If, however, you are annoyed with it after an hour or so, don?t be afraid to mute the television or computer and play some music of your own. You will have a much more enjoyable gaming experience that way and are less likely to get a headache from playing.

You can develop problems with your wrist and fingers with excessive game play. A good way to minimize the fatigue and problems associated with this, try exercising your hands and wrists with stress balls or other devices. This will allow you to play for longer periods of time and might actually improve your gaming skills.

Don?t be afraid to play a game on ?Easy? mode the first time around. You are supposed to enjoy the experience of playing, not suffer through it. If the game is any good, you may want to replay it later on anyway. Don?t feel bullied by games that tease you for choosing ?Easy,? either?return them!

Get involved in contests and tournaments. If you are really good at video games, start giving serious thoughts to entering tournaments. It will make the game more exciting for you, since you play others at your level, and it might also give you a financial reward you can really appreciate.

If you and your child have a long road trip ahead, bringing along his hand-held video games can help your child pass the time away. Car trips can be difficult on a child, and anything that can make his trip more pleasant can give him a better experience. Just be sure to set ground rules and time limits on how much time he spends on it.

Now you can see that there are many different things you need to know about video games. This can turn into an addictive hobby and is something the whole family can enjoy. You just have to know what you?re doing, and what to look for in video games. Use the above article to learn just that.

Orioles split with Jays, stand 1 1/2 back

By DAVID GINSBURG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:01 p.m. ET Sept. 24, 2012

BALTIMORE (AP) - The Baltimore Orioles dreaded this doubleheader ever since it became part of their schedule late last month.

Beating the same team twice on the same day is not an easy task, even if the opposition is a last-place club in the midst of a losing streak. And so, after Toronto earned a split with a 9-5 win Monday night, the Orioles shrugged their shoulders and looked ahead to another day of chasing the New York Yankees in the AL East.

"Very hard to sweep a doubleheader in the major leagues," Baltimore manager Buck Showalter said. "It wasn't from a lack of effort. That's why when you get a rainout, you try to play because you know the challenge ahead of you somewhere down the line. The Blue Jays have a lot of pride."

J.P. Arencibia broke open a tight game with a seventh-inning grand slam, leaving the Orioles 1 1/2 games out of first place in the division.

In the opener, Adam Jones went 4 for 4 with a homer and two RBIs to lead Baltimore to a 4-1 victory. But the Orioles lost a half-game in the standings to the Yankees, who won 6-3 at Minnesota.

The doubleheader came into being after the teams endured a rainout on Aug. 26.

"You never want to play games like this late in the season," Baltimore right fielder Chris Davis said. "But at the same time, if you can win both of them, you help yourself out. Obviously we weren't able to do that."

The Orioles fell behind 4-0 in the nightcap and missed several bases-loaded chances to take the lead before Arencibia connected off Jake Arrieta to give Toronto a 9-4 cushion.

"I think anytime you strand guys on base you know it's a missed opportunity," Davis said.

Edwin Encarnacion hit his 41st home run for the Blue Jays, who snapped a seven-game skid. Arencibia, who came into the game mired in a 2-for-36 slump, finished with three hits and five RBIs.

Toronto long ago fell out of playoff contention, but the Jays were reminded how fun it is while performing before an enthusiastic crowd of 31,015.

"It's pretty impressive the atmosphere they have here," Arencibia said. "It's a lot of fun to play in that kind of atmosphere."

Ricky Romero (9-14) allowed four runs, eight hits, four walks and a homer in five-plus innings. But a strong performance by the Toronto bullpen enabled the left-hander to end a 13-game losing streak over 15 starts since June 22.

"Good for him and good for us," Blue Jays manager John Farrell said. "We needed a win and it's been a long time since Ricky's had a W."

Encarnacion put the Blue Jays up 2-0 against Wei-Yin Chen (12-10) with a two-run drive in the first inning. In the second, Arencibia hit a sacrifice fly and Anthony Gose added an RBI single.

Robert Andino singled in two runs in the bottom half, but Baltimore left the bases loaded. Nate McLouth hit an opposite-field drive to left in the fifth to get Baltimore to 4-3, but the Orioles again left the bases full.

After Moises Sierra homered for Toronto in the sixth, the Orioles loaded the bases with no outs in their half, bringing many in the crowd to their feet. Brad Lincoln replaced Romero and gave up a first-pitch RBI single to J.J. Hardy before striking out Jones. Davis followed with a fly ball to Gose in left field, and Taylor Teagarden was thrown out at the plate after tagging up.

Baltimore also loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but scored only once on a double-play grounder.

In the first game, Orioles rookie Steve Johnson (4-0) allowed three hits over five shutout innings to lower his ERA to 1.62. Half his big league wins have come against Toronto.

Although the Blue Jays got two runners on base in three of the first four innings, Johnson worked out of trouble on each occasion.

Jim Johnson, the fifth Baltimore pitcher, worked the ninth for his major league-best 48th save in 51 opportunities.

Jones' four hits tied a career high. Now in his seventh season, Jones has already set career highs with 32 homers and 101 runs, and the All-Star center fielder needs only three RBIs to eclipse his previous high of 83, set last year.

Jones added a single and a double in the nightcap and has hit safely in 19 of 23 games in September, with six home runs and 13 RBIs.

"Adam relishes competition," Showalter said. "He's obviously had a heck of a year. He's turning into quite a player."

Henderson Alvarez (9-14) gave up four runs, eight hits and three walks in 5 2-3 innings. He is 2-7 in his last 10 starts.

In the fourth, Davis walked and Jones followed with a drive to left to put Baltimore up 2-0. Ryan Flaherty hit a solo shot in the fifth, and Jones singled in the sixth and came home on a double-play grounder.

Toronto scored in the eighth on an RBI double by Rajai Davis. With runners on second and third and two outs, Darren O'Day came in to strike out Kelly Johnson.

NOTES: Toronto purchased the contracts of RHPs Shawn Hill and Bobby Korecky and transferred LHP J.A. Happ (foot) to the 60-day DL. ... Orioles LHP Randy Wolf is experiencing discomfort in his left elbow and will undergo an MRI on Tuesday. ... Seventeen of Jones' HRs have given the Orioles the lead. Baltimore is 23-8 when he homers. ... Toronto's first-game defeat was its sixth straight in Baltimore, its longest single-season skid in Charm City since 1980. The Orioles are 10-6 against the Blue Jays, clinching their first season series win over Toronto since 2004. ... Omar Vizquel got two hits to move into a tie with Mel Ott for 40th on the career list with 2,876.

BlackBerry outage affecting users in Europe, Middle East and Africa (update: service restored?)

BlackBerry outage affecting users in Europe, Middle East and Africa

While the two events are entirely unrelated, a major service outage coinciding with potentially the biggest mobile of the year hitting stores worldwide is just plain old unlucky. Users of RIM's BlackBerry service in the EMEA region are at the wrong end of a network problem affecting BBM, email and internet. At the moment it doesn't appear to be of the vast and crippling scale as last time, but small consolation if you're one of the unlucky ones. RIM has acknowledged the issue, and you can bet the farm on the fact there is more than a handful of slightly stressed engineers on the case, hoping to keep customers from making that impulse purchase. Let us know in the comments if you're affected.

Update: We've just received this official statement from RIM in the UK:

"Our apologies to any customers impacted by the BlackBerry service issue today. We can confirm that services have been restored and are now operating normally."

Update 2: RIM has now issued a statement from CEO Thorsten Heins on the matter, in which he also apologizes and notes that up to six percent of the company's user base may have been affected with a "maximum delay of 3 hours in the delivery and reception of their messages."

I want to apologize to those BlackBerry customers in Europe and Africa who experienced an impact in their quality of service earlier this morning. The BlackBerry service is now fully restored and I can report that no data or messages were lost. Up to 6 percent of our user base may have been impacted. Preliminary analysis suggests that those customers may have experienced a maximum delay of 3 hours in the delivery and reception of their messages. We are conducting a full technical analysis of this quality of service issue and will report as soon as it concludes. I again want to apologize to those customers who were impacted today.

Obama offers his World Series prediction

(AP) ? President Barack Obama is offering his prediction for the upcoming World Series.

Obama says during a campaign stop in Virginia that he is "looking forward to a White Sox-Nationals World Series." The president says, "It's going to happen."

The former Illinois senator is a longtime Chicago White Sox baseball fan. The president congratulated supporters in the Virginia suburbs of Washington the day after the Washington Nationals clinched a playoff berth. The White Sox are currently in first place in the American League Central.

Obama spoke at Pfitzner Stadium, home of the minor league Potomac Nationals, a minor league affiliate of the Nationals.

HBT: Melky Cabrera ineligible for batting title

This is both totally unexpected and extremely unusual. And dare I say, ill-advised. ?Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports:

In an unprecedented agreement between Major League Baseball and union officials, suspended Giants outfielder Melky Cabrera will be ruled ineligible to win the 2012 NL batting title, sources told CSNBayArea.com.

Cabrera asked to be removed from consideration on Wednesday, when his representatives sent a letter to union officials. The Players? Association worked out a one-time amendment to Rule 10.22(a) with MLB officials on Thursday, one day after Commissioner Bud Selig said publicly that he was not likely to take action on the matter.

A ?one-time amendment? to the rule is a curious phrase. ?Rather Orwellian, actually. What it is a decision to just ignore a rule because baseball and/or Melky Cabrera or whoever initiated this decision didn?t like the?repercussions?of that rule.

I presume this will make a lot of people happy because no one was comfortable seeing Melky Cabrera win the batting title. ?But it also opens the door for all manner of messing around with the rules in the future when they don?t produce results to someone?s liking. ?Which is exactly the kind of arbitrary thing having rules is supposed to prevent.

I also love how Melky ?asked to be removed from consideration? for the batting average title. Quick:?Adam Dunn! Call the league and ask to be taken out of consideration for the strikeout title.

Romney has $50.4 million for fall sprint

WASHINGTON (AP) ? At the end of August, Republican Mitt Romney had about $50.4 million to spend on the final months of the campaign, though reports released Thursday showed he owed $15 million on a loan taken that month.

Romney took out a $20 million loan in late August, in the days before his campaign had access to funds they had raised for the general election because he was not yet the official nominee. The new reports show he paid back $5 million before the end of August.

Romney won't have to release his September fundraising data until next month. Campaign officials have said he paid back an additional $4 million on the loan this month.

The loan helped Romney pay for mailings, staff salaries and TV advertising ? and it helped his finances appear healthier on paper. It boosted his total receipts to $86.6 million from the $66.6 million the campaign otherwise took in. Romney in fact spent almost as much as he raised during the month of August.

The loan boosted his cash-on-hand total from $35.4 million to $50.4 million.

Romney couldn't spend money raised for the general election until becoming his party's nominee in late August. He used general election money as collateral for the loan.

Romney and the Republican Party raised more than $111 million combined. That was less than President Barack Obama and the Democrats, who raised more than $114 million.

Alaskans to get $878 in yearly oil fund payout this year

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) ? Buy an iPhone 5 or replace the leaky rain gutters? Splurge or save? Ah, the tough choices that befall Alaskans every year, when they get their dividend checks from the state's oil savings account just for living here.

State officials said Tuesday that eligible Alaskans will receive $878 this year. That's significantly less than last year's dividend of $1,174, which was the smallest since 2006. The payout will be distributed Oct. 4.

The Alaska Permanent Fund Corp. last month suggested residents could expect a smaller dividend this year.

CEO Michael Burns has said the formula used to calculate the dividend will stay depressed until officials can stop using performance from 2009, when the fund recorded its first net loss in the statutory net income.

Like others surveyed in rural parts of the state, Sina Takafua, from the northernmost town of Barrow, plans to use her first-ever Alaska Permanent Fund dividend to pay bills. That way, she said, she can free up paychecks from her job at the local fur shop and get her Christmas shopping done early.

Some of her customers, on the other hand, are going for some warmth ? and style. They're already pre-ordering parkas made of caribou, wolverine and other furs.

"They're waiting for their PFD to pay for them," said Takafua, who moved to Alaska from Maui, Hawaii, with her two sons in 2010. Her husband joined the family later, so he's not yet eligible for a dividend like they are.

New residents must live in Alaska for one calendar year to benefit from the permanent fund, which was established in 1976 after North Slope oil was discovered.

The state began doling out money from the Alaska Permanent Fund in 1982. Residents who have received every check since then have gotten a total of $34,243. 41, officials said.

This year's lower check amount was no surprise to fund officials.

The amount of investment earnings allocated to dividends is based on a five-year rolling average of Permanent Fund performance. Dropping from the five-year rolling average this year was 2007, a recent high-water mark in which the fund earned $3.4 billion in statutory net income, the realized gains used in calculating the dividend. Staying in was 2009, during the recession, when the fund recorded its statutory net income loss.

Alaska has no state income tax, but residents must pay federal taxes on the bounty. Still, it's free money for every eligible man, woman and child. Don't expect anyone to balk at it.

In the western town of Nome, many residents are using the money to pay for outrageously expensive groceries and gasoline, which sells for almost $6 a gallon. Gone are the days when people spent their dividend checks on snowmobiles from Morgan's Sales and Service shop, said fourth-generation owner Pat Johanson.

The money that goes to Johanson's four children will end up in savings. But Johanson's plan for his own check depends on how winter fares compared with last year, when temperatures were more brutal than usual.

Johanson, his wife and kids could have a vacation in the near future.

"If January gets to 30 and 40 below again," he said, "I want to go to Hawaii."

So does Sean Irvin of Anchorage. He went there on last year's dividend and wants to go to Maui with this year's money.

Still, there he was at an Anchorage Best Buy, eyeing another PFD treat ? no, not the new iPhone coming out Friday, but a humble phone for a landline.

"I want big buttons and caller ID," Irvin said.

Amazon to close fashion website endless.com

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc is closing its fashion website endless.com as the world's largest Internet retailer focuses on a new, upgraded apparel and accessories section of its main website.

On September 27, endless.com will become part of Amazon.com/Fashion, according to a statement on the front page of endless.com on Tuesday.

Endless.com was launched in 2007, specializing mainly in women's shoes and handbags.

Starting next week, endless.com said customers will be able to buy shoes, handbags, jewelry and watches from more brands from Amazon's main website, along with apparel.

The switch is part of a big push by Amazon this year to expand further into fashion and apparel, one of the fastest-growing retail categories online. EBay Inc, Amazon's main rival, has done well with its fashion offerings in recent years.

"We are shifting our Endless business to Amazon in order to focus on the Amazon Fashion experience," an Amazon spokesman said on Tuesday.

Zappos and Shopbop, two other fashion websites owned by Amazon, are staying.

"Between Amazon, Shopbop and Zappos, our customers have easy access to an assortment of quality brands and a variety of shopping experiences for any fashion need," the spokesman added.

Amazon also has a successful flash sales website called MYHABIT with a significant focus on fashion items.

Scientific 'break-even' or better is near-term goal

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. Magnetically imploded tubes called liners, intended to help produce controlled nuclear fusion at scientific "break-even" energies or better within the next few years, have functioned successfully in preliminary tests, according to a Sandia research paper accepted for publication by Physical Review Letters (PRL).

To exceed scientific break-even is the most hotly sought-after goal of fusion research, in which the energy released by a fusion reaction is greater than the energy put into it an achievement that would have extraordinary energy and defense implications. That the liners survived their electromagnetic drubbing is a key step in stimulating further Sandia testing of a concept called MagLIF (Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion), which will use magnetic fields and laser pre-heating in the quest for energetic fusion.

In the dry-run experiments just completed, cylindrical beryllium liners remained reasonably intact as they were imploded by huge magnetic field of Sandia's Z machine, the world's most powerful pulsed-power accelerator. Had they overly distorted, they would have proved themselves incapable of shoveling together nuclear fuel deuterium and possibly tritium to the point of fusing them. Sandia researchers expect to add deuterium fuel in experiments scheduled for 2013.

"The experimental results the degree to which the imploding liner maintained its cylindrical integrity throughout its implosion were consistent with results from earlier Sandia computer simulations," said lead researcher Ryan McBride."These predicted MagLIF will exceed scientific break-even."

A simulation published in a 2010 Physics of Plasmas article by Sandia researcher Steve Slutz showed that a tube enclosing preheated deuterium and tritium, crushed by the large magnetic fields of the 25-million-ampere Z machine, would yield slightly more energy than is inserted into it.

A later simulation, published last January in PRL by Slutz and Sandia researcher Roger Vesey, showed that a more powerful accelerator generating 60 million amperes or more could reach "high-gain" fusion conditions, where the fusion energy released greatly exceeds (by more than 1,000 times) the energy supplied to the fuel. See https://share.sandia.gov/news/resources/news_releases/z-fusion-energy-output/.

These goals both the near-term goal of scientific break-even on today's Z machine and the long-term goal of high-gain fusion on a future, more powerful machine require the metallic liners to maintain sufficient cylindrical integrity while they implode.

The liner is intended to contain fusion fuel like a can holds peanut butter, and push it together in nanoseconds like two semicylindrical shovels compacting snow together.

An element of drama is present because the metallic liner doing the compressing is also being eaten away as it conducts the Z machine's enormous electrical current along its outer surface. This electrical current generates the corresponding magnetic field that crushes the liner, but under the stress of passing that current, the outer surface of the liner begins to vaporize and turn into plasma, in much the same way as a car fuse vaporizes when a short circuit sends too much current through it. As this happens, the surface begins to lose integrity and becomes unstable. This instability works its way inward, toward the liner's inner surface, throughout the course of the implosion.

"You might say: The race is on," said McBride. "The question is, can we start off with a thick enough tube such that we can complete the implosion and burn the fusion fuel before the instability eats its way completely through the liner wall?

"A thicker tube would be more robust in standing up to this instability, but the implosion would be less efficient because Z would have to accelerate more liner mass. On the flip side, a thinner tube could be accelerated to a much higher implosion velocity, but then the instability would rip the liner to shreds and render it useless," he continues. "Our experiments were designed to test a sweet spot predicted by the simulations where a sufficiently robust liner could implode with a sufficiently high velocity."

By following the dimensions proposed by the earlier simulations, the physical test proved successful and the liner walls maintained their integrity throughout the implosion.

Radiographs taken at nanosecond intervals depicted the implosion of the initially solid beryllium liner through to stagnation the point at which an implosion stops because the liner material has reached the cylinder's central axis. The images show the outer surface of the imploding liner distorting until it resembles threads on a bolt. However, the more crucial inner surface remains reasonably intact all the way through to stagnation.

Said McBride's manager Dan Sinars, "When Magnetized Liner Inertial Fusion was first proposed, our biggest concern was whether the instabilities would disrupt the target before fusion reactions could occur. We had complex computer simulations that suggested things would be OK, but we were not confident in those predictions. Then McBride did his experiments, using liners with the same dimensions as our simulations, and the outcomes matched. We are now confident enough to take the next steps on the Z facility of integrating in the new magnetic field and laser preheat capabilities that will be required to test the full concept. Consequently, we intend to take those first integration steps in 2013."

Slated for December are the first tests of the final two components of the MagLIF concept: laser preheating to put more energy into the fuel before magnetic compression begins, and the testing of two secondary electrical coils placed at the top and bottom of the can. Their magnetic fields are expected to keep charged particles from escaping the hot fuel horizontally. This is crucial because if too many particles escape, the fuel could cool to the point where fusion reactions cease.

Sandia researchers intend to test the fully integrated MagLIF concept by the close of 2013.

"This work is one more step on a long path to possible energy applications," said Sandia senior manager Mark Herrmann.

The liner implosion experiments also served to verify that simulation tools like the popular LASNEX code are accurate within certain parameters, but may diverge when used beyond those limits information of importance to other labs that use the same codes.

McBride will give an invited talk on his work this fall at the American Physical Society's annual Division of Plasma Physics meeting in Providence, RI. He is also preparing an invited paper for Physics of Plasmas to explain the PRL results in greater depth.

The work was funded by Sandia's Laboratory Directed Research and Development program and the National Nuclear Security Administration.
