In uptown Manhattan, storm leaves a hanging crane and minor damage

The damaged crane, part of construction on the One57 building, on West 57th Street (Allison Joyce/Getty Images??

Monday's giant storm inflicted the greatest damage on the lower half of New York City, but uptown, on West 57th Street, a massive, dangling crane is drawing crowds.

At a thousand feet above the ground, the 80-ton swing arm dangles next to the tallest condominium under construction in the city, located between 6th and 7th avenues. Bovis Lend Lease, the company managing the building's construction, is waiting for the last winds to die down before it scoops up the hanging hulk of metal.

"All I'm doing today is watching that crane," said a company employee, who asked not to be named. Wearing a muddied yellow raincoat, he leaned against a nearby shop on the corner of 56th Street, on standby.

"The only reason they haven't taken it down is because of the winds," he said. "Once they die down, they'll rig it up from the air. Right now it's no danger."

His remarks echoed the statement of the tower's developer, Gary Barnett, who told Crain's New York Business, "Everything that can be done is being done." In the meantime, metal gates and police tape block off access to the surrounding areas, as crowds of people stand along 57th Street and 5th Avenue taking photos and chattering as the crane's arm sways in the wind.

The crane is the most conspicuous damage up here resulting from the storm, but nearby, more destruction can be seen: On a building at the corner of Park Avenue and 59th Street, the facade of one floor about 20 stories up tumbled down during the storm, leaving a mass of debris on the now closed-off section below.

But for most who live around here, the most common word to describe the storm has been "boring." There have been few power outages, and the worst symptoms of the storm have been the gusts of wind. In nearby pubs like the Carriage House on 59th Street, people are hanging out, glancing at the images on TV of? more serious disorientation in lower Manhattan.

"It's honestly been a little boring," said Alana, who lives a few blocks away by the U.N. headquarters. She said she's chiefly been preoccupied with taking in her friend from Brooklyn, where winds were felt as early as Sunday night. "No power out, I've still got Internet. It hasn't been very exciting."

Others living uptown have also concentrated chiefly on coming to the aid of their friends, and checking on their work spaces downtown.

"I'm at a small tech company in Union Square, so I swung by to check on any leaking or flooding," says Brian, playing darts with a friend at the Carriage House. "Otherwise, it's mainly been working from home and helping out the people I know."

Shuttle inches toward retirement home at LA museum

The space shuttle Endeavour makes it's way down Manchester Blvd. over a closed 405 fwy in Inglewood, Calif., Friday, Oct. 12, 2012. Endeavour's 12-mile road trip kicked off shortly before midnight Thursday as it moved from its Los Angeles International Airport hangar en route to the California Science Center, its ultimate destination. (AP Photo/Chris Carlson)

At every turn of Endeavour's stop-and-go commute through urban streets, a constellation of spectators trailed along as the space shuttle ploddingly nosed past stores, schools, churches and front yards.

Having escaped out of Earth's atmosphere two dozen times, Endeavour's slow-speed trek Saturday to its retirement center took it through the working class streets of southern Los Angeles.

In an instant, the shuttle crossings became part of history.

Along the 12-mile (19-kilometer) course, people marveled at the engineering. Some rooted for Endeavour when it appeared it might clip a lightpost. Others wondered if it could just hurry up to its destination.

Crowds gathered in front of lnglewood High School before sunrise Saturday to watch Endeavour roll by at about 2 mph (3.2 kph). Many were bundled up sipping coffee.

Dean Martinez, who lives in Los Angeles but works in Inglewood, came with his wife and 9-year-old daughter.

"This is great for the city as a whole. It makes us proud," said Martinez, a project director for a nonprofit whose family took turns taking pictures of one another as the shuttle slowly inched by.

Added his wife, Marcia, "It's a big deal especially for this neighborhood. It's important to witness history and for our children to experience it."

Endeavour was scheduled to inch into the California Science Center late Saturday to spend the rest of its years as a museum piece.

Before it did, the shuttle made a late-morning pit stop at the Forum, where it was greeted in the arena's parking lot by a throng of cheering spectators. After crawling up Crenshaw Boulevard, the shuttle was scheduled to stop for a bit at the intersection with Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. A celebration was planned, including speeches by politicians and a dance performance choreographed by Debbie Allen.

Endeavour hit the pavement before dawn Friday, trundling out of the Los Angeles International Airport on a remote-controlled 160-wheel carrier past diamond-shaped "Shuttle Xing" signs. The first day of the move was punctuated by long idle spells as crews reconfigured the carrier and leapfrogged ahead on the route to hoist power lines and dismantle traffic lights and street signs.

It will move past an eclectic mix of strip malls, mom-and-pop shops, tidy lawns and faded apartment buildings. Its final destination: California Science Center in South Los Angeles where it will be put on display. (AP Photo/Mark J. Terrill)

The pace picked up Friday night when the five-story-tall shuttle was towed over a freeway overpass by a truck (The mated shuttle and carrier were too heavy for that section.) Next to the freeway, Randy's Donuts roadside sign, featured in movies such as "Iron Man 2," landed another cameo as a shuttle backdrop.

There were bumps in the road. Several hundred Inglewood residents suffered hours-long outages when power lines were temporarily cut. Some businesses lost customers because of street and sidewalk closures.

For most of the way, Endeavour straddled wide boulevards?Manchester, Crenshaw, Martin Luther King Jr. The one exception was when the shuttle poked through a slightly curved residential street lined with apartment buildings on both sides. It was such a squeeze that its 78-foot (24-meter) wingspan towered over driveways.

John Wilkes, 69, a longtime Inglewood resident, woke up five hours earlier than usual to stake out a spot.

"This is definitely a treat," said Wilkes, who is retired from the airline industry. "But what would be a better treat is to be able to take a ride on the shuttle."

As it wound through South Los Angeles, residents welcomed its presence. Before the move, some lamented over the loss of shade as trees were chopped down to provide clearance.

When Endeavour rolls down King Boulevard, special attention will be paid to the pine trees planted in honor of the slain civil rights leader.

Endeavour may have circled the globe nearly 4,700 times, but its roots are grounded in California. Its main engines were fabricated in the San Fernando Valley. The heat tiles were invented in Silicon Valley. Its "fly-by-wire" technology was developed in the Los Angeles suburb of Downey.

It's no longer shiny and sleek like when it first rolled off the assembly line in the Mojave Desert in 1991 to replace Challenger, which exploded during liftoff in 1986, killing seven astronauts. As it cruised block-by-block, it's hard to miss what 123 million miles (198 million kilometers) in space and two dozen re-entries can do to the exterior.

"You can sense the magnitude of where it's been," said Janet Dion, a family therapist from Manhattan Beach, fixating on the heat tiles that protected the shuttle during the return to Earth.

Shuffling Endeavour through city streets was a laborious undertaking?nearly a year in the making. It could not be taken apart without damaging the delicate tiles. Airlifting it was out of the question. So was driving on freeways since it was too massive to fit through underpasses.

"This is unlike anything we've ever moved before," said Jim Hennessy, a spokesman for Sarens, the contract mover.

Once movers settled on the route, the neighborhoods with a front-row seat were transformed. Some 400 trees were cleared with the promise of replanting later. Telephone, cable and power lines were lifted sky-high. Chunks of steel plates were laid down to prevent the streets from buckling and to protect underground utilities.

It'll take days or weeks before a sense of normalcy is restored. In the case of the trees, it'll be years before the newly planted grow to adult height.

Such a move is not cheap. The cross-town transport was estimated at $10 million, to be paid for by the science center and private donations.

Endeavour's transport followed other shuttle moves. Earlier this year, Discovery taxied to the Smithsonian's annex hangar in Virginia. The prototype Enterprise was pulled by barge to the Intrepid Sea, Air and Space Museum in New York City.

Next month, Atlantis, which remained at its Cape Canaveral, Florida, home base, will be towed short distance to the Kennedy Space Center visitor's lobby.

Joseph O. Kesselring's Classic 1941 Black Comedy ?Arsenic and ...

The final play of the Towne Players of Garner?s 2012 season will be New York City playwright and screenwriter Joseph O. Kesselring?s classic black comedy, Arsenic and Old Lace. This community-theater production will run Oct. 12, 13, and 18-20 at the Garner Performing Arts Center (formerly Garner Historic Auditorium).

Arsenic and Old Lace focuses on the oddball Brewster family of Brooklyn, NY, which has a whole raft of skeletons in their closets. Abby and Martha Brewster (played by Francis Stanley and Kelly Stansell) are two sweet but lethal little old ladies who have turned home into a boarding house for single gentlemen of modest means, many of whom are lost and lonely souls estranged from or abandoned by their families.

So, as an act of charity, the balmy Brewster sisters put their hapless gentlemen boarders out of their misery by slipping a lethal dose of arsenic into the homemade elderberry wine that they serve guests and then calling their strapping but utterly delusional nephew Teddy (Tim Upchurch) to bury their victims? bodies in the basement. Teddy Brewster thinks that he is Rough Rider Colonel and later President Teddy Roosevelt and that he is charging up San Juan Hill whenever he dashes upstairs. Indeed, every time he digs another grave in the basement, Teddy thinks he is digging another lock in the Panama Canal!

All goes well until Martha and Abby?s beloved nephew, drama critic Mortimer Brewster (Stephen Johnson), discovers his aunts? shocking secret. Mortimer is horrified and desperate to conceal his eccentric aunts? string of mercy killings ? and the apparently virulent strain of madness in the Brewster family DNA ? from his fianc?e Elaine Harper (Paige Bruner).

But before Mortimer can rescue the remaining boarders from his aunts, his long-lost brother and the black sheep of the family ? sadistic murderer-on-the-lam Jonathan Brewster (Stuart Jonap) ? shows up with shaky, hard-drinking plastic surgeon Dr. Einstein (Tim Wiest) in tow. Jonathan is furious because his 1940s-style Extreme Makeover has left him looking like Frankenstein star Boris Karloff! And now Mortimer has to save them all from Jonathan ? and his aunts.

In addition to the performers named above, the Towne Players? cast for Arsenic and Old Lace includes (in alphabetical order) Jack Chapman as Mr. Witherspoon, Tom Davey as Lt. Rooney, David Flood as Mr. Gibbs, Eddie Hodges as Officer Klein, Don Howard as the Rev. Harper, Scott Renz as Officer Brophy, and Tim Stancil as Officer O?Hara.

The show?s creative team includes the husband-and-wife duo of director Beth Honeycutt and technical director Scott Honeycutt, proud parents of newly crowned Miss North Carolina 2012 Arlie Honeycutt. Rebecca Stiles is stage manager for Arsenic and Old Lace.

Originally entitled Bodies in Our Cellars, but extensively revamped and rewritten by producers Howard Lindsay and Russel Crouse, the highly successful playwriting and producing team behind Life with Father (1939), State of the Union (1945), and The Sound of Music (1959), Arsenic and Old Lace made its Broadway debut on Jan. 10, 1941 at the Fulton Theatre. On Sept. 25, 1943, the show moved to the Hudson Theatre, where it closed on June 17, 1944, after a then-record 1,444 performances.

In reviewing the show?s original Broadway production, New York Times drama critic Brooks Atkinson wrote, ?Let?s not exaggerate! At some time there may have been a funnier murder charade than Arsenic and Old Lace ? but the supposition is purely academic. Joseph Kesselring has written one so funny none of us will ever forget it.?

Atkinson also wrote, ?Nothing in Mr. Kesselring?s record has prepared us for the humor and ingenuity of Arsenic and Old Lace. He wrote There?s Wisdom in Women in 1935 and Cross Town in 1937. But his murder drama is compact with plot and comic situation?. The lines are bright. The story is mad and unhackneyed. Although the scene is always on the verge of macabre and the atmosphere is horribly ominous, Mr. Kesselring does not have to stoop to clutching hands, pistol shots or lethal screams to get his effects. He has written a murder play as legitimate as farce-comedy.?

The 1944 motion-picture version of Arsenic and Old Lace, directed by Frank Capra (It Happened One Night) from a screenplay by Julius J. Epstein and his twin brother, Philip G. Epstein, starred Cary Grant as Mortimer Brewster. But Grant hated his performance ? Mortimer Brewster was his least-favorite film role ? and the debonair actor thought his portrayal was hopelessly flawed by overacting. However, audiences, then and now, disagreed. They love Grant?s frantic double-takes as family matters go from bad to worse.

The Towne Plays present ARSENIC AND OLD LACE at 8 p.m. Oct. 12, 13, 18, and 19 and 2 and 8 p.m. Oct. 20 in the Garner Performing Arts Center, 742 W. Garner Rd., Garner, North Carolina 27529.

NASA rover Curiosity finds a rock not seen before on Mars (+video)

Using a laser and X-rays, the NASA rover Curiosity identified a rock named Jake as a form of basalt, similar to volcanic rocks found in ocean-island settings on Earth.

NASA's Curiosity heads to rock target 'Jake,' named in honor of Mars Science Laboratory engineer Jacob Matijevic. Narrated by Jessica Samuels, Mars Science Laboratory Flight Director.

The Martian rock, a form of basalt, has a composition very similar to volcanic rocks found in ocean-island settings such as Hawaii and the Azores, as well as in rift zones ? regions where Earth's continents split and begin separating into separate land masses.

The rock, named Jake Matijevic for a key member of the rover engineering team who passed away shortly after Curiosity arrived on the red planet, can form in a number of ways, says Edward Stolper, provost of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and a member of Curiosity's science team.

On Earth, this kind of rock forms as magma cools and crystallizes under relatively high pressure and with relatively high concentrations of water dissolved in the magma, he explains, adding that when the molten leftovers erupt, they tend to erupt explosively.

The release, during volcanic eruptions, of water dissolved in magma is one pathway for water vapor ? a greenhouse gas ? to enrich and warm a planet's atmosphere. Indeed, Curiosity's mission aims to see if Gale Crater ever could have hosted microbial life ? a prospect that would have required the presence of liquid water in the crater.

On Mars, the process that formed ?Jake? is unclear.

"We have one rock," Dr. Stolper said at a briefing Thursday. Sitting on the floor of Gale Crater, where fine soils and layered, sedimentary rocks seem to be the norm, Jake appears to be an interloper, removed from its original geologic setting.

If Curiosity finds more rocks like Jake in its travels to Mt. Sharp, the crater's central summit and the rover's ultimate destination, "we'll be able to evaluate the differences between them and what processes seem to relate them," he said. But if Jake is "a one-off,? he added, ?we're not going to find out the details" of how it formed.

The analysis of Jake's chemical composition comes from data gathered in late September by two tools mounted on Curiosity: ChemCam and an X-ray spectrometer on an instrument turret at the end of the rover?s seven-foot-long arm.

ChemCam, which sits atop Curiosity's mast, consists of a laser that sends a thin, pulsed beam to vaporize tiny patches of rock, each pulse generating what looks like a brief spark on the rock surface. ChemCam's mini-telescope captures the light from the sparks ? light whose spectrum carries the signatures of the chemical elements the rock contains.

ChemCam examined two small areas of the football-sized rock. In one, it laid down a short track of five strike marks, each about a third of a millimeter across. In the second, the laser put down a grid of nine spots. Each got 30 pulses ? the first four of which clear the rock surface of dust.

The X-ray spectrometer, known as APXS, uses a radioactive source to expose the rock sample in question to X-rays. When the X-rays interact with atoms in the rock, those atoms release X-rays of their own, which carry the element's signature. APXS detects these back-atchya X-rays to tease out information about the sample's composition.

Each instrument detects some chemical elements better than others, but together, they form a powerful team while crosschecking each other's results. The time spent zapping Jake was APXS's first live-fire exercise on Mars and the first time the two were used to analyze the same rock.

Because other rovers and landers have carried X-ray spectrometers, researchers were able to determine that Jake was unique among the basaltic rocks scientists have analyzed so far on the red planet.

While researchers analyzed the results from Jake, engineers have started to clean out the hardware needed to feed rock and soil samples into two key instruments housed in Curiosity's chassis. On Mars, it seems, clean hardware is dusty hardware.

Essentially, engineers used Martian soil scooped, vibrated, and sieved, to clean unavoidable terrestrial residue from the inside walls of the sample-delivery system.

"We don't want to measure something we brought with us, we want to measure something that came from Mars," says Luther Beegle, the rover's sampling-system scientist as NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena.

The way to tell that the scrub-down is working? Dust clings to the inside surfaces of the sample-delivery system, known as CHIMRA.

Where else but on Mars would a custodian's nightmare turn into an engineer?s dream?

Report: U.S. Broadband Providers' Pay-TV Focus May Be Killing The ...

The U.S. risks falling behind on online product innovation because it isn?t gaining a critical mass of subscribers to superfast broadband services (of 25Mbps+). That?s the scenario being painted by the Broadband Stakeholder Group, an advisory group to the U.K. government, writing in a new report examining global demand for superfast broadband services.

In a section on services, the report notes that in order to develop a new generation of internet services that utilise superfast broadband speeds internet companies need a critical mass of subscribers in place before they can launch services ? in the same way that demand for first generation broadband prefigured the creation of successive waves of online companies

The problem facing the next wave of U.S. internet innovators is that uptake of superfast broadband is relatively low ? the BSG calculates it?s less than three percent of total U.S. households ? meaning it?s a long way from reaching the necessary critical mass of users. Why is demand so low??According to the report,?the incentive for U.S. broadband providers to compete on speed grounds ? and thereby drive demand for superfast services ? is being suppressed by a focus on selling bundled pay-TV services, rather than standalone superfast broadband.

The report notes

Despite widespread availability [in the U.S.] over the last few years, superfast broadband has not yet taken off.?This can likely be explained by two factors. The first is that both cable operators and copper?incumbents are focusing on selling their TV services first, with broadband part of the bundle?with that service. Although this has usually been the approach for cable TV providers in most?markets, in the US the focus on Pay-TV services by the copper incumbents above the?broadband service is unique.

The BSG notes that neither Verizon nor AT&T are heavily promoting superfast broadband services ? and suggests the commercial threat from?online video services such as Netflix is likely far more front of mind for the companies than ?the limited competition on broadband that is?restricted by the existence of the territorial duopolies?.??This has meant that operators have?not competed on broadband speed in the same way that they have in other markets,?particularly in Europe,? the report adds.

It continues

The US was the home to online service innovation for the first generation of broadband. A number of these companies have become global giants. Whether such innovation will occur in the US this time, for next generation broadband, is perhaps a more open question. We have already seen that the US has a very low number of subscribers on genuinely superfast services, even counting those cable subscribers that have been uplifted. With the relative lack of competition in the US market, there is less of an incentive to compete on broadband speeds
when the dominant product in the bundle is the Pay-TV service ? this applies as much to the cable operators as it does to the copper-line incumbents.

If this is to continue for any period of time, then the US will not reach a critical mass of superfast subscribers, and so will not reach the type of addressable market size that encouraged the early broadband innovators to develop new services ? we have previously noted Google?s foray in to FTTH buildout in Kansas City as perhaps a sign that they do not perceive the US?s broadband to be developing as they would wish.

The report goes on to suggest that if the U.S. does not act to accelerate superfast broadband adoption there is a potential opportunity for Europe to leverage faster uptake of superfast broadband to become the playground for the next wave of web innovation.

?If an addressable market of superfast broadband users can be created in Europe then it may become the new test-bed for online service innovators,? the report adds ? although it also notes that just having the users is not in itself a guarantee of anything, pointing to?high levels of superfast broadband uptake in Asian markets that have nonetheless failed to result in the development of ?an innovative online service environment based on superfast broadband?.

?There remains an open question as to where the next wave of innovation?will come from,? the report adds.

Are teens ditching Facebook for Twitter? [infographic]

Tween Cell Phone TextingWho is the ?Prom King? when it comes to Social Media? for teens? Twitter or Facebook? Michael Johnson, one of MethodShop?s readers, sent us this note:

?I thought MethodShop might find this interesting. I was talking to my 16-year-old last night and she said her high school friends are abandoning Facebook and moving to Twitter. This is surprising because last year Twitter was considered ?lame? by her friends but now it?s the cool way to communicate. Is this a trend or just a random occurrence at one high school??

Excellent question. Is increased Twitter use a growing trend with teens? Mobile has been a major driver for Twitter, and who is on their phone more than a teenager? Obviously Facebook is available on mobile too, but the simple text/IM style of Twitter is very appealing to teens. Justin Bieber?s popularity of Twitter is also another indicator of teen adoption of Twitter. He currently has 28M+ fans.

And there?s no denying that teens love to text message. A recent infographic by OnlineSchools.com, claims that the average teens sends an?astonishing?3,417 text message every month. In case you?re wondering, that breaks down to 7 text messages per waking hour.

Teenagers and cell phones

Here?s some more data to think about. According to this Pew Research Center study, teenagers are the second biggest age group using Social Media and half of all Twitter users access the service using a cell phone.

So what does all of this mean? Is Twitter benefiting from teen?s love for text messaging and mobile communication? What social network do you think teens prefer: Twitter or Facebook? Leave a comment below.

Ballmer Loses Bonus Money Thanks To Poor Windows Sales And ...

SEATTLE, Oct 9 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp Chief Executive Steve Ballmer got a lower bonus than last year's, partly for flat sales of Windows and his failure to ensure that the company provided a choice of browser to some European customers.

Ballmer, who took over as CEO from co-founder Bill Gates in 2000, earned a bonus of $620,000 for Microsoft's 2012 fiscal year, which ended in June, down 9 percent from the year before, according to documents filed Tuesday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

His salary -- low by U.S. corporate standards -- remained essentially flat at $685,000.

It is the third year in a row that Ballmer has not earned his maximum bonus, set at twice his salary.

Microsoft's recent financial year was scarred by a massive $6.2 billion write-down for a failed acquisition and lower profit from its flagship Windows system as computer sales stood still.

In the company's filing, Microsoft's compensation committee said it took into account a 3 percent decline in Windows sales over the year, as well as "the Windows division failure to provide a browser choice screen on certain Windows PCs in Europe as required by its 2009 commitment with the European Commission."

The company's failure to provide a browser choice in Europe was an embarrassing setback for the software maker, which has been embroiled in disputes with European regulators for more than a decade and paid more than $1 billion in fines for including its own Internet Explorer browser on Windows. It now faces further fines from a new investigation.

China raises rail spending plan again to support economy

BEIJING (Reuters) - China has raised its planned railway investment by 20 billion yuan ($3.2 billion) to 630 billion yuan for 2012, the Ministry of Railways said, marking a third such increase this year as part of steps to support the slowing economy.

The revised spending plan would be 3.3 percent higher than an initial 610 billion yuan tally announced last month, according to a bond prospectus published on www.chinabond.com.cn, the government's bond issuance website.

The increase comes as the government tries to shield the world's second-largest economy from stiff global headwinds, including fast-tracking some infrastructure projects.

The government has recently approved 25 rail projects that could be worth more than 700 billion yuan, as part of measures to stimulate the country's slowing economy.

The International Monetary Fund on Tuesday cut its forecast on China's 2012 economic growth to 7.8 percent from 8 percent and warned of risks to emerging Asia if the euro zone crisis worsens and the United States does not avoid its "fiscal cliff".

The Ministry of Railways said in September it would boost spending by 30 billion yuan to 610 billion yuan this year while it raised its target to 580 billion yuan by 12.4 percent in July.

The government said on Wednesday it would increase state spending and offer tax breaks to quicken the development of the country's urban public transport system.

However, China has cut planned railway investment by 500 billion yuan to 2.3 trillion yuan under a five-year plan to 2015, official media reported on Tuesday, but that may reflect spending cuts that have already occurred.

China's rail investments slowed sharply in 2011 after a fatal high-speed train crash that led to the firing of the minister and some of the ministry's senior staff.

But the government has been trying to boost investment since then, approving rail projects and giving the green light for the ministry to raise money through corporate bonds.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? Signs that are too small or unclear to consumers seem to be a growing national issue, leading some business owners to lose potential customers, according to University of Cincinnati Marketing Professor James Kellaris.

"This persistent, growing national problem is frustrating for consumers and can lead to loss of business and, by extension, loss of tax revenue for the community," Kellaris said.

Kellaris, the James S. Womack/Gemini Chair of Signage and Visual Marketing in the UC Carl H. Lindner College of Business, will present this research during the October 10 -11 Fourth-Annual National Signage Research & Education Conference (NSREC) in Cincinnati.

Through a UC analysis of a market research survey of North American households, Kellaris found that inadequate signage could be construed as a communication failure.

"About half the population surveyed in 2011 has driven by and failed to find a business due to signage and communication failure," he said.

While communication failure affects all groups and ages, the study found that women experience signage communication failure more than men.

Shoppers, Kellaris noted, favor signs that are visible, legible and informative, but those preferences contradict current trends of smaller, more uniform signs, using non-verbal symbols/icons.

Kellaris said that shoppers are drawn to unfamiliar stores based on clear, attractive signs, and that often, these stores convey personality and character as perceived from signage quality.

The resolution, Kellaris says, "is to find the right balance between the interests of shoppers, businesses and the broader interests of the community."

The National Signage Research & Education Conference (NSREC) is a two-day event at the Kingsgate Marriott Conference Center focusing on the theme: "The Technology of Signage." Other UC presenters include Jeff Rexhausen, research associate in the Economics Center for Education & Research, and George Vredeveld, professor of economics. They will speak on the topic of "The Economic Value of Signs Research Study." The conference keynote address will be delivered by UC's Craig Vogel, an internationally known designer, educator and author who currently holds an interim appointment as the Terry Fruth/Gemini Chair of Signage Design and Community Planning.

PRLog (Press Release) - Oct 10, 2012 -
VideoCentric, one of the UK?s leading and most experienced visual communication integrators, has developed the VideoCloud portfolio, a range of self-managed, part-managed and fully-managed video services to enable organisations worldwide the ability to easily meet with professional colleagues, home workers and mobile users without the need for purchasing any video infrastructure of their own.

With standards-based H.323 & SIP interoperability and support for virtually all devices, including immersive, room and desktop telepresence, PC and Mac software clients, iPad tablets, Smartphones, OCS, Lync, Skype, Google, ISDN telephony and SMARTBoards, this comprehensive portfolio demonstrates VideoCentric has not just focused on a single video conferencing service, but has developed a whole range of services for nearly every communication need. Services include Virtual Room Multipoint services for up to 4, 9 or 25 participants, network traversal and transcoding services to ensure everyone is accessible, no matter what network or system they are using, two-way data collaboration services and concierge services offering multi-lingual, 24x7 support in local time zones around the world.

?We have listened to our customers, researched requirements, created the partnerships and developed the VideoCloud which we now believe to be the most comprehensive set of cloud video service available anywhere in the world today,? David Shimell, Managing Director explains. ?VideoCentric first launched its cloud based video services back in June 2008 and this experience has shown us what customers really need from a VaaS provider. We have evolved our portfolio over the last 4.5 years, embracing best-in-class partners where we have not been able to beat them and adding our own value where they were lacking.?

Craig Brown, Technical Director for VideoCentric added, ?With one of the most highly trained technical teams in the industry, accreditations with all the leading manufacturers and our award winning customer service, we have now made video conferencing available to anyone, anywhere and at anytime. Our wealth of knowledge in the video conferencing, network infrastructure and telecommunications industries has allowed us to offer a unique and in-depth service portfolio unlike any other.?

The VideoCloud portfolio currently comprises 12 specific services and options, but has the ability to be adapted on a per customer basis, so that a ?hybrid? cloud can be built to meet a specific set of requirements. Dependent upon the level of self-administration required, VideoCloud Services are supplied as self, part or fully managed services, and flexible subscription offerings mean that customers can commit to annual, quarterly or Pay-As-You-Go terms. A range of specialised services are also available, enabling even those who have already previously invested in their own video infrastructure, the ability to ?extend in to the cloud? taking advantage of the VideoCloud?s additional features, security and public/social network benefits.

Emily Shimell, Communications Manager said, ?As a trusted visual communications integrator working with each of the worlds? leading manufacturers we can help new and existing customers decide on the best route forward for them, whether this be conferencing in the cloud, an on-premise solution or a hybrid of both ? our unbiased approach due to our partnerships means that our customers come first and the right solution will always be found.?

The VideoCloud has been designed, developed, integrated and tested in the UK?s most comprehensive interoperability testing suite in the heart of the Thames Valley, which has recently been extended to provide live demonstrations of desktop and cloud services running on a wide variety of platforms. Service resilience is provided by equipment and bandwidth located in 3 separate data centres in the UK and 2 overseas, and dedicated staff are available to administer and support the service in-house.

Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading - Romance ...

Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading by simdam500(m): 10:23am On Oct 09It is not easy to maintain a long distance relationship. But if you have one, you must take care to keep it alive, for over a long period of time, a long distance relationship might not work. How would you know if your long distance online relationship is fading? There are certain signs you should look out for. The major

1. You communicate less
You have begun to communicate lesser and lesser. You do not find talking to him amazing anymore and the magic has reduced. Also, you do not look forward to talking to him again sooner. The initial excitement has faded and you now are looking towards moving on. It is a sign that the relationship is now fading.

2. He takes time to reply to your messages
You have sent him a message but he is taking ages to reply. If it is once in a while, the reason could be genuine. But if it becomes habitual, remember that he does not consider you crucial in his life anymore and it is a sure sign that your long distance relationship is now fading. You may also find that you do not want to be connected to him round the clock any longer.

3. He cannot find time for you readily anymore
Earlier, he was readily available to talk to you over the phone or have a video chat when you wanted. But it now seems that he is finding it more and more difficult to find time for you. The reason could be genuine, but if he really loves you, he will definitely find a way to be able to talk to you. But if it seems that he is putting no effort to be available for you, it could be a sign of a fading relationship.

4. He is acting aloof
If his behavior has become cold recently and he seems to be acting more like a stranger, it could be a sign that he is seeing someone else. If he is acting aloof, you might consider rethinking the relationship as it could be on the verge of breaking up.

5. Neither of you is ready to compromise
In case of a long distance relationship, it is essential that both visit each other sometimes. But if you have discovered that for the last few days, he does not find time to be able to visit and you and/or you do not want to spend a nice holiday or weekend to go and visit him, it is a sign that the relationship is not working anymore.

6. He talks to you only when he is alone
If you find that your long distance boyfriend talks to you only when he is alone, he could be hiding you from his friends and family and the reason behind it could be that he is no longer considering you as his future life partner. It is a sure sign that the relationship is fading.

Re: Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading by Abujafood: 12:30pm On Oct 097. He picks up fights with you easily and more often than before.... Means he's becoming bored and irritated with you

8. Doesn't pick or returns your calls and gives only frivolous reasons for behaving that way ...... Same as above but in addition is not totally sure of what to do (leave or stay)

9. Doesn't play heartily like before ....... (you are less appealing to him now than ever before)

More to come as I recall!

To the unmarried, it's not worth an adventure plunging into, most times it leads to heartaches, even if your partner is within your reach, he or she can still play games how much more when he or she is miles away, please to the unmarried here don't give it a try. To the married, of course, after she has given you issues you can still muster the courage to forgive in case of 'misbehaviour' while to the woman she can still forgive as well but my advise is; being closer is the best that can happen in any relationships. Although in this modern world of rat race for survival, you must learn to adapt! My point!!Re: Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading by solidbroda: 12:52pm On Oct 09

Why "HE"? Why not "She"? Are you meaning to tell everyone that men are the only one who cause long distant relationships to fail?. Women are more likely to stray in long distant relationship. Reason is, their little brain can't seem to understand what is right from what is wrong. Like a thread that made up a front page one time "why do women bleep wherever they go?"

It's not worth giving testimony on my friend, you are just one of the 'lucky 10 in 10million cases,' the truth of the matter is that, 'long distance relationship' encourages suspicions, lack of trusts, jealousies and unnecessary questions and answers times. Pack all these together and jam them into a 'relationship' trust me such union will explode! My penny worth!

Nobody is arguing its not 'working for you' just be sincere with yourself on this noble truth that, it only works in an infinitesimally ratio not meant for someone who 'really LOVE' his or her partner. Remember, broken hearts take time to heal and most cases never heals. Advice: Folks in the house, be careful! If you are playing games no wahala, but if its a serious relationship, just box that idea and get your partner 'closer'.Re: Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading by bid4rich(m): 1:17pm On Oct 09

Obiyor God Bless you 1 billion times, exactly my stance on this 'very sensitive and volatile issue'. I don't want the message "it's working for me" to be encouraged here! For the young ones here, who might be too naive to fall for the bait (trust me it's a bait) they may not forgive those preaching the message of 'its working for me'! The world lives on pretense, to those involved in distance relationship why not ask your distant partner some sensitive questions about how he or she is coping, then add 1+ 2 together, you will see it's not the best of relationship ways.Re: Signs That Your Long Distance Relationship Is Fading by ayo jango(m): 1:32pm On Oct 09Why commit urself to someone you hardly see or run into @ will that's just punishment.

Language learning makes the brain grow, Swedish study suggests

ScienceDaily (Oct. 8, 2012) ? At the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy, young recruits learn a new language at a very fast pace. By measuring their brains before and after the language training, a group of researchers has had an almost unique opportunity to observe what happens to the brain when we learn a new language in a short period of time.

At the Swedish Armed Forces Interpreter Academy in the city of Uppsala, young people with a flair for languages go from having no knowledge of a language such as Arabic, Russian or Dari to speaking it fluently in the space of 13 months. From morning to evening, weekdays and weekends, the recruits study at a pace unlike on any other language course.

As a control group, the researchers used medicine and cognitive science students at Ume? University -- students who also study hard, but not languages. Both groups were given MRI scans before and after a three-month period of intensive study. While the brain structure of the control group remained unchanged, specific parts of the brain of the language students grew. The parts that developed in size were the hippocampus, a deep-lying brain structure that is involved in learning new material and spatial navigation, and three areas in the cerebral cortex.

"We were surprised that different parts of the brain developed to different degrees depending on how well the students performed and how much effort they had had to put in to keep up with the course," says Johan M?rtensson, a researcher in psychology at Lund University, Sweden.

Students with greater growth in the hippocampus and areas of the cerebral cortex related to language learning (superior temporal gyrus) had better language skills than the other students. In students who had to put more effort into their learning, greater growth was seen in an area of the motor region of the cerebral cortex (middle frontal gyrus). The areas of the brain in which the changes take place are thus linked to how easy one finds it to learn a language and development varies according to performance.

Previous research from other groups has indicated that Alzheimer's disease has a later onset in bilingual or multilingual groups.

"Even if we cannot compare three months of intensive language study with a lifetime of being bilingual, there is a lot to suggest that learning languages is a good way to keep the brain in shape," says Johan M?rtensson.
