'India should be sensible. Pakistan is dysfunctional'

'The only certainty to emerge was that we couldn't count on the West, so embroiled in its own cataclysms now, to protect us any longer...

So when a new Pakistani communique surfaced the day after Karun left, settling definitively on a nuclear strike as a deterrent against defeat, the panic that had remained at bay so far started escalating...

'My khaki friend articulates the question that throbs in all our brains. "It's not like the Pakistanis can be trusted -- who knows when they really intend to launch? Why not finish them off first -- why are we taking such a chance?"' (Chapter 1, The City Of Devi)

The only saving grace," says Manil Suri, "is that when things go too far, I think what both countries hope and expect is that the US or the UN or someone will come in and calm things down. And that is what happened in 2002. The situation was defused."

In The City Of Devi, Suri explores the alternative -- what happens if the West or the United Nations can't mediate. "In the book, they (the West) end up having their own problems, they are battling cyber warfare and they can't come in. So the whole (crisis between India and Pakistan) accelerates rapidly. And that's the thing!"

"In the fog of war, you don't know what will happen. That's the scary part."

Earlier this month, two Indian soldiers -- Lance Naik Hemraj and Lance Naik Sudhakar Singh -- were killed and beheaded during an attack by Pakistani troops across the Line of Control in the Medhar area in Poonch.

Despite the severe provocation, and the media demanding strong action, India's reaction has been measured. It is this quality that India displays, says Suri, which gives him hope.

"India should be the sensible one. Pakistan is very dysfunctional. If you are face-to-face with someone who is crazy, then should you also act crazy? No. You should be sensible. At least one party has to keep things calm," says Suri.

"With so many groups running around doing what they want, I don't think Pakistan has the political power to really control things. So, if things go out of control there, then acting with great bluster and vigour (in India) could really make things worse," he adds.

"If you are dealing with the government, then the government has political power and you can threaten them politically. But if you are dealing with factions, then how do you carry out a threat?"

"I am for keeping things at a certain level, not letting them escalate. I think that's the best strategy."

BlackBerry Z10 spotted at UK retailers prior to BB10 event

Looks like retailers might be jumping the gun a bit on the about-to-be-announced BlackBerry Z10 smartphone ahead of the upcoming event. Twitter user @bandozer spotted one at a UK Phones4U retailer and managed to snap a pic (after the break), saying that "it looks and feels good," while our own tipster forwarded us the above image that came from another store. Looks like the only thing that'll stop the numerous leaks is when RIM finally announces the darned thing -- sometime in the next hour or two.

Microsoft retools Office for touch screen, Web use

(AP) ? Microsoft's retooled version of its Office software is hitting the market as the company tries to extend one of its key franchises beyond personal computers.

Tuesday's debut comes six months after Microsoft previewed the new-look Office, which includes popular word processing, spreadsheets and email programs.

The revamped Office boasts touch controls, just like the redesigned version of the Windows operating system that Microsoft Corp. released three months ago. The company, which is based in Redmond, Wash., is trying to ensure that its products retain their appeal at a time when people increasingly rely on smartphones and tablet computers instead of PCs.

Yet Microsoft still isn't trying to get Office on the largest number of devices possible. Office 2013 doesn't include an option that works on Apple Inc.'s iPhone and iPad or smartphones and tablets running the Android software made by Google Inc. That leaves out the majority of smartphones and tablets sold in the past two years.

The company believes Office 2013 is currently best suited for Windows devices, said Chris Schneider, Microsoft's senior public relations manager for Office. Microsoft is trying to become a bigger player in the mobile market with its own operating system for smartphones and tablets.

Office 2013 is the first overhaul of the software suite in three years.

The bundle of programs has become a staple on desktop and laptop computers, providing a rich vein of revenue for Microsoft.

The company has reaped most of its Office sales from licenses allowing buyers to install the suite of programs on individual machines, a very lucrative strategy. The Microsoft division anchored by Office generates about $24 billion in annual sales, accounting for nearly one-third of Microsoft's total revenue.

Revenue in the Office division fell from the previous year during the three months ending in December, partly because many prospective buyers have been awaiting the latest version.

In one of the biggest changes, Microsoft has tailored Office 2013 so it can be peddled primarily as a program that's used over Internet connections. All information is automatically stored in Microsoft's data centers, allowing for access to the same material on multiple devices. The content also can be stored on the hard drives of devices.

Microsoft is offering Office 2013 in a $100 annual subscription package, called 365 Home Premium, which includes online access on up to five Windows devices or Mac computers. The fee also provides 20 additional gigabytes of storage on Microsoft's SkyDrive to supplement the 7 gigabytes that the company gives away to accountholders for free. Subscribers also will get 60 minutes of free international calls on Microsoft's Skype service for Internet phone calls and video chats.

College students and teachers will be able to buy Office 2013's online product for $80 for four years, which works out to about $1.67 per month.

The online push reflects Microsoft's recognition that people want access to documents and email on whatever Internet-connected device they might have, wherever they may be, whether it's at work, home or a store while running errands.

"The technology needs to be able to move with you," Schneider said.

It's the first time that Microsoft has tried to persuade consumers that a recurring online subscription is the best way to buy and use Office. Microsoft had previously sold online Office subscriptions primarily to small businesses.

Office will still be sold under a one-time licensing fee that allows the software to be installed on a single machine. The fees start at $140.

Microsoft's decision to reshape Office into an online service makes sense, although it may take customers a while to sign up for the subscriptions, said Edward Jones analyst Josh Olson. He suspects major companies that rely on Office probably will be among the last users to make the switch.

"This is a good innovation, but the uptake may be slow to begin because it is so different," Olson said.

Wall St Week Ahead: Bears sleep as U.S. stocks near record highs

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. stocks have been on a tear in January, moving major indexes within striking distance of all-time highs. The bearish case is a difficult one to make right now.

Earnings have exceeded expectations, the housing and labor markets have strengthened, lawmakers in Washington no longer seem to be the roadblock that they were for most of 2012, and money has returned to stock funds again.

The Standard & Poor's 500 Index <.spx> is up 5.4 percent this year and above 1,500 - climbing to the spot where Wall Street strategists expected it to be by mid-year. The Dow Jones industrial average <.dji> is just 2 percent away from all-time highs reached in October 2007. The Dow ended on Friday at 13,895.98, its highest close since October 31, 2007.

The S&P 500 has risen for four straight weeks and eight consecutive sessions, the longest streak of days since 2004. On Friday, the benchmark S&P 500 ended at 1,502.96 - its first close above 1,500 in more than five years.

"Once we break above a resistance level at 1,510, we dramatically increase the probability that we break the highs of 2007," said Walter Zimmermann, a technical analyst at United-ICAP, in Jersey City, New Jersey. "That may be the start of a rise that could take equities near 1,800 within the next few years."

The most recent Reuters poll of Wall Street strategists estimated the benchmark index would rise to 1,550 by year's end, a target that is 3.1 percent away from current levels. That would put the S&P 500 a stone's throw from the index's all-time intraday high of 1,576.09 reached on October 11, 2007.

The new year has brought a sharp increase in flows into U.S. equity mutual funds, and that has helped stocks rack up four straight weeks of gains, with strength in big- and small-caps alike.

That's not to say there are no concerns. Economic growth has been steady, but not as strong as many had hoped. The household unemployment rate remains high at 7.8 percent. And more than 75 percent of the stocks in the S&P 500 are above their 26-week highs, suggesting the buying has come too far, too fast.

MUTUAL FUND INVESTORS COME BACK

All 10 S&P 500 industry sectors are higher in 2013, in part because of new money flowing into equity funds. Investors in U.S.-based funds committed $3.66 billion to stock mutual funds in the latest week, the third straight week of big gains for the funds, data from Thomson Reuters' Lipper service showed on Thursday.

Energy shares <.5sp10> led the way with a gain of 6.6 percent, followed by industrials <.5sp20>, up 6.3 percent. Telecom <.5sp50>, a defensive play that underperforms in periods of growth, is the weakest sector - up 0.1 percent for the year.

More than 350 stocks hit new highs on Friday alone on the New York Stock Exchange. The Dow Jones Transportation Average <.djt> recently climbed to an all-time high, with stocks in this sector and other economic bellwethers posting strong gains almost daily.

"If you peel back the onion a little bit, you start to look at companies like Precision Castparts , Honeywell , 3M Co and Illinois Tool Works - these are big broad-based industrial companies in the United States and they are all hitting new highs, and doing very well. That is the real story," said Mike Binger, a portfolio manager at Gradient Investments, in Shoreview, Minnesota.

The gains have run across asset sizes as well. The S&P small-cap index <.spcy> has jumped 6.7 percent and the S&P mid-cap index <.mid> has shot up 7.5 percent so far this year.

Exchange-traded funds have seen year-to-date inflows of $15.6 billion, with fairly even flows across the small-, mid- and large-cap categories, according to Nicholas Colas, chief market strategist at the ConvergEx Group, in New York.

"Investors aren't really differentiating among asset sizes. They just want broad equity exposure," Colas said.

The market has shown resilience to weak news. Last week, the S&P 500 held steady on Thursday despite a 12 percent slide in shares of Apple after the iPhone and iPad maker's results. The giant tech company is heavily weighted in both the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 <.ndx>. In the past, Apple's drop has suffocated stocks' broader gains.

In the last few days, the ratio of stocks hitting new highs versus those hitting new lows on a daily basis has started to diminish - a sign that the rally is narrowing to fewer names - and could be running out of gas.

Investors have also cited sentiment surveys that indicate high levels of bullishness among newsletter writers, a contrarian indicator, and momentum indicators are starting to suggest the rally has perhaps come too far.

THE FED AND JOBS ON THE AGENDA

The Federal Reserve's policymakers will meet this week for the first time this year. The Federal Open Market Committee's meeting will start on Tuesday and end on Wednesday. Most economists polled in late January expect the Fed's ultra-loose monetary policy to stay in place well into next year despite the modest growth forecast for the U.S. economy.

The market's resilience could be tested this week with Friday's release of the January non-farm payrolls report. About 155,000 jobs are forecast to have been added in the month, a Reuters poll showed. The U.S. unemployment rate is expected to hold steady at 7.8 percent.

"Staying over 1,500 sends up a flag of profit taking," Jerry Harris, president of asset management at Sterne Agee, in Birmingham, Alabama, said in reference to the S&P 500. "Since recent jobless claims have made us optimistic on payrolls, if that doesn't come through, it will be a real risk to the rally."

A number of marquee names will report earnings this week, including bellwether companies such as Caterpillar Inc , Amazon.com Inc , Ford Motor Co and Pfizer Inc .

On a historic basis, valuations remain relatively low. The S&P 500's price-to-earnings ratio sits at 15.66, just a tad above the historic level of 15.

Worries about the U.S. stock market's recent strength do not mean the market is in a bubble. Investors clearly don't feel that way at the moment.

"We're seeing more interest in equities overall, and a lot of flows from bonds into stocks," said Paul Zemsky, who helps oversee $445 billion as the New York-based head of asset allocation at ING Investment Management. "We've been increasing our exposure to risky assets."

For the past week, the Dow climbed 1.8 percent, the S&P 500 rose 1.1 percent and the Nasdaq advanced 0.5 percent.

George McGovern Estate Sale: Hundreds Turn Out In South Dakota

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- Hundreds of people braved frigid temperatures Saturday for a chance to buy books, furniture and other items once owned by three-time presidential candidate George McGovern.

A two-day estate sale at the U.S. senator's Sioux Falls home started at 9 a.m. Saturday. McGovern, one of the nation's most-outspoken voices for liberalism who was deeply opposed to the Vietnam War, died in October at age 90.

People began lining up for the sale as early as 4 a.m., and with only 20 to 30 visitors allowed in the house at time, others also had to wait in line for hours for their chance to get a glimpse at McGovern's items.

"It's surreal. It's very emotional in some respects. You can see the character and personality of this man in this house," said Matt Arntz, a 58-year-old attorney from Dayton, Ohio, who drove 14 hours so he could get a close look at McGovern's possessions and talk to friends and fans of the Democrat.

Arntz is planning to write a biography about McGovern, who lost the 1972 presidential race to Richard Nixon in a historic landslide. Arntz worked on that campaign.

Sitting in a room filled with political memorabilia and McGovern's books, Arntz was working to pare down some of his selections. He already had a box full of personal photos and books McGovern had read and made notes in.

"That will help me understand his thinking some time ago when he read this," he said of the handwritten notes.

A lot of books were for sale, including some of McGovern's own titles, many of them out of print and a few autographed. Other items included antique furniture pieces, fine china, campaign buttons and photographs of McGovern with other Senate leaders.

McGovern's daughter Ann McGovern told The Associated Press earlier that the family decided to hold an estate sale over an auction with the hope that people with a connection to the former senator would be able to buy the items.

Gordon Locken, 61, of Aberdeen, S.D., and his wife, Jan, 59, waited in line for nearly two hours Saturday. They ended up paying $32 for two books that had handwritten notes from the authors to McGovern.

"If he read every book, he did a wonderful job," Gordon Locken said of the many books that filled shelves in the nondescript home.

Although too young to have ever voted for McGovern, 26-year-old Tiffany Rolfing said she liked him because he stood up for what he believed in. She came with her boyfriend just to look at the items the political heavyweight once owned.

"We thought it would be cool to check out all the photos with celebrities," Rolfing said.

Proceeds from the sale of copies of McGovern's book "An American Journey" will be donated to the hunger relief organization Feeding South Dakota, which McGovern championed.

Venezuela's vice president says he's target of assassination plot

CARACAS (Reuters) - Venezuelan Vice President Nicolas Maduro said unidentified groups had entered the country with the aim of assassinating him and the head of the National Assembly as President Hugo Chavez recovers from cancer in Cuba.

Maduro provided no proof of the claim, made at a rally on Wednesday to mark the end of a dictatorship in the OPEC nation 55 years ago, but he said action would be taken shortly.

"For several weeks we've been following groups that have infiltrated the country with the aim of making attempts on the life of (Assembly head) Diosdado Cabello and my own," Maduro told a crowd of red-shirted "Chavista" supporters.

"They will not manage it against either of us... Don't be surprised by actions that are taken in coming hours and coming days. Criminals infiltrating our country can't ask for mercy."

Chavez named Maduro as his preferred successor before he went to Cuba in early December for surgery, his fourth operation in 18 months for an undisclosed form of cancer in his pelvis that was first diagnosed in mid-2011.

Chavez has not been seen nor heard from in public since then. Venezuela's government says his condition is improving after he suffered multiple complications caused by the December 11 surgery.

Officials say he is in "good spirits" but no date has been set for his return home. Maduro said he and the Energy Minister Rafael Ramirez would travel to Havana on Wednesday to see Chavez.

"NONSENSE"

Uncertainty over the 58-year-old president's fragile health has raised the specter of political instability in the deeply polarized South American country of 29 million people.

In his 14 years in power, Chavez has repeatedly accused Venezuela's "traitorous" opposition leaders of plotting to kill him, but has offered little proof.

The opposition says the charges are a smokescreen to distract from Venezuela's daily problems such a shortages of staple goods, high inflation and one of the worst crime rates in the world.

"Now Maduro comes with the little story that we want to see an attempt against his life and that of Al Capone," opposition leader Henrique Capriles said on Twitter, referring to Cabello as the Prohibition-era U.S. gangster. "Absolute nonsense!"

Both the opposition and the ruling Socialist Party had originally planned large marches for Wednesday January 23.

It is an emotive date for Venezuelans that recalls the day in 1958 when military dictator Marcos Perez Jimenez fled the country amid widespread riots and a coup by rebel soldiers.

That had raised the possibility of supporters clashing in the streets, but the opposition subsequently decided to hold a meeting instead at a large hall in eastern Caracas.

Showing images of a fracas at that event, state TV said opposition supporters punched and hassled a crew, leaving one cameraman with a broken collar-bone. Authorities later said three suspects linked to the trouble had been arrested.

In the city center, three separate marches by Chavez supporters converged on the 23 de Enero neighborhood, which was named after the day Jimenez was toppled from power. The demonstrations were smaller than other rallies in recent months.

Wearing a red and white tracksuit and speaking from the stage, former bus driver Maduro said opposition supporters' derogatory terms for him and Cabello - an ex-army buddy of Chavez - betrayed their disdain for Venezuela's poor.

"They say 'We must get rid of that little lieutenant and that bus driver,'" Maduro told the crowd, many of whom waved posters of Chavez or wore T-shirts with an image of his eyes.

"It is the condescending language of an oligarchy that will never understand who we are, who Chavez is, who the people are."

Apple's profit rocket hits air pocket

(AP) ? Apple's blockbuster revenue growth is slowing drastically, as iPhone sales plateau and the company finds itself lacking revolutionary new products.

The company's warning, issued Wednesday as part of its financial results for the holiday quarter, sent Apple Inc.'s stock plunging by more than 10 percent, wiping out a year's worth of gains.

Analysts said the warning suggested Apple can no longer sustain its growth without some completely new products. Its last revolutionary creation, the iPad, was launched in 2010. Co-founder Steve Jobs, who was the engine behind the creation of the iPod, iPhone and iPad, died in 2011.

"It has been an overriding concern with Apple that they would not be able to generate revenue growth just rolling out new versions of old products," said Jeff Sica, president and chief investment officer of SICA Wealth Management. "Now they've proven it in their numbers."

On a conference call with analysts, Apple CEO Tim Cook rebutted that idea, but as usual, gave no details.

"We're working on some incredible stuff. The pipeline is chock full," he said.

Before he died in 2011, Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told biographer Walter Isaacson that he had figured out how to create a groundbreaking, easy-to-use TV set. Since then, company watchers have been waiting for the company to bring out something in that vein to re-energize sales. Cook said the company was still working on it.

"I tend to believe that there's a lot we can contribute in the space, and so we continue to pull the string and see where it leads us," he said.

Apple said it expects sales of between $41 billion and $43 billion in the current quarter, which ends in March. That would usually be little cause for concern, even though analysts were expecting $45.6 billion, because Apple usually lowballs its forecasts. But Chief Financial Officer Peter Oppenheimer said the company is changing its practices and providing a reasonable range rather than a single, easily achievable number.

That means Apple is looking at sales growth of about 7 percent from last year's January to March quarter, a striking number for a company that's posted double-digit increases in every quarter except one since 2008.

Apple's stock fell $55.58 to $458.43 in extended trading, after the release of the results. The shares are down 35 percent from their all-time high, hit Sept. 21, when the iPhone 5 launched.

Fueled by earlier versions of the iPhone, Apple's market capitalization decisively overtook that of Exxon Mobil in early 2012, making it the world's most valuable company. With Wednesday's drop, Apple is worth just 5 percent more than Exxon.

Apple's enviable profit growth also hit a wall in the October to December quarter. It said net income in the fiscal first quarter was $13.1 billion, or $13.81 per share, flat with a year ago. That still beat expectations, as analysts polled by FactSet had forecast earnings of $13.48 per share.

Revenue was $54.5 billion, up 18 percent from a year ago. Analysts were expecting $55 billion. Sales were held back by the fact that the latest quarter had 13 weeks, one less than the corresponding 2011 quarter.

Apple shipped 47.8 million iPhones in the quarter, about 1 million less than analysts were expecting, and 22.9 million iPads, also about 1 million short.

Most surprisingly, Mac sales were also 1 million short, at 4.1 million. That's a 22 percent drop from shipments a year ago. Oppenheimer said this was because Apple couldn't get the new iMac desktops out before December.

Cook said iPhone supplies were short too, and the company could have sold more of both the iPhone 5 and older iPhone 4 if it had been able to make more.

Most technology companies would be ecstatic if they posted 18 percent sales growth and $13 billion in profit for a single quarter, but Apple is held to a high standard, set by the shocking, iPhone-propelled success of the last few years.

"Apple has been growing tremendously and that level of growth can't be sustained by any company," said Sarah Rotman Epps, senior analyst at Forrester Research.

Investors have already been concerned that Apple's strategy of keeping the price of the iPhone high means it's losing out on sales, particularly overseas. Consumers are instead opting to buy cheaper smartphones running Google Inc.'s Android software, which has propelled South Korea's Samsung Electronics to the world's largest maker of smartphones. The average wholesale price of the iPhone is $640, hundreds of dollars more than smartphones with comparable hardware.

There's speculation among company watchers that the company will produce a cheaper iPhone, but that would cut into its profit margin and could tarnish the company's image as a purveyor of premium products.

Apple had warned that the holiday quarter's profits would be lower than Wall Street was initially expecting, because it had so many new products coming out, including the iPhone 5 and iPad Mini. New production lines are more expensive to run and yield more defective products that need to be redone or thrown out rather than sold.

Corporate debt management poor | SaigonMoney.com - The digital ...

Debt management and payment capacity of Vietnamese enterprises are weak and on the verge of decline, says a survey of the 500 largest companies in Vietnam (VNR500) on their 2012 revenues.

The survey conducted by Vietnam Report JSC was announced last week. As per the survey, debt management at local large firms is poor as proven by their debt-to-asset ratios.

The average ratio of debts to total assets of the State corporate sector is 0.7, while the private sector has a ratio of 0.8 and foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) 0.5.

?These figures show that Vietnamese enterprises rely heavily on loans. As lending rates cannot go down immediately, debt payment capacity of local firms will likely decline, affecting capital cost and indirectly pushing down their profits,? says a report on the survey.

The revenue growth rate of the country?s largest companies has constantly fallen over the years, the report reveals.

In 2010, their revenue picked up 7.83% against 2009, while the year-on-year growth rates in the two preceding years were over 40%. The rate last year dropped further to 2.37%.

The average return on equity (ROE) of VNR500 firms is 20%, meaning they earn VND2 in profit from every VND10 spent. ROE of FIEs is 39.22%, remarkably higher than the ratios of private firms and State-owned enterprises, at 16.28% and 15.53% respectively.

Thanks to effective cost control, FIEs enjoyed higher profits than the other sectors in the economy.

Samsung Vietnam greatly contributed to the total revenue of enterprises in Bac Ninh last year. For the first time since 2007, Bac Ninh made it to the list of the top five corporate revenue earning provinces.

Although there are only four Bac Ninh-based companies in the VNR500 list, revenues of these firms accounted for 3.18% of the total in VNR500 companies in 2012. Last year also marked the first time that Samsung Vietnam had appeared on the top four list in Vietnam, ranking fourth.

Telecom, chemicals, mechanical engineering and agriculture-forestry were the sectors with the highest ROE, over 25%. In contrast, power suffered a negative ROE.

Ex-Ravens WR Evans still feels part of team

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. (AP) ? While Lee Evans awaits another chance in the NFL, he'll be rooting for the Baltimore Ravens in Sunday's AFC championship rematch with New England.

The wide receiver who couldn't hold onto a pass in the end zone a year ago ? which likely would have sent the Ravens into the Super Bowl ? has no regrets. Except, maybe, that he's not part of the Ravens this time around.

Evans says in an email that he "wishes he made the touchdown catch, but is thankful for the overall journey. You play the game to win and celebrate the joy with your teammates."

With 27 seconds to go, Joe Flacco connected with Evans in the deep right corner of the end zone, but defensive back Sterling Moore knocked the ball to the ground.

Soon after, Billy Cundiff missed a 32-yard field goal that would have forced overtime.

Evans says he has not gotten depressed over the play ? Moore did make a strong strip after Evans got two hands on the ball.

"Give him credit for the play he made," Evans said.

Unfortunately for Evans, he's remembered as much for that incompletion as he is for two 1,000-yard receiving seasons in seven years with the Bills, and 43 touchdown catches.

"My goal is to play in the NFL again," said Evans, who was cut in the preseason last summer by Jacksonville, a team not exactly overloaded with receivers. "And if I am afforded that opportunity, I will be fully prepared and absolutely capable of competing at the highest level."

Cundiff hooked up with Washington and then San Francisco this season, but was cut by the 49ers on Friday without kicking for them as they stuck with veteran David Akers, who had been struggling.

Evans said he will be in front of his TV on Sunday watching the title games. He likes what he's seen from Baltimore (12-6) and knows the Ravens' recent postseason history; they've won a playoff game in each of the last five seasons and will be in their third AFC championship match in those five years.

But he also knows how tough the Patriots (13-4) are at home, particularly in January.

"It is a chess match between a defense that goes hard after the quarterback and gets after you on every play," Evans said, "and an offense that seeks to exploit their match-ups while always trying to capitalize on a defense's mistakes."

Evans' only season with the Ravens was marred by injury and he made only four receptions. He did help mentor Torrey Smith, Baltimore's top draft pick in 2011 who came into the league with the same kind of speed and game-breaking ability that made Evans the 13th overall pick in the 2004 draft out of Wisconsin.

He's seen Smith develop into a dangerous weapon for Flacco, and veteran Anquan Boldin has been superb in the playoffs. Kick returner Jacoby Jones got free on the 70-yard TD pass in the final minute of regulation that tied Denver in last weekend's divisional-round win.

"I saw growth in him this year as both a man and a player," Evans said of Smith. "He is a great guy who gets the most out of his abilities. His play really highlighted the improvements he made toward being a more fluid route runner and a sure-handed pass catcher."

Evans is particularly impressed by Flacco, the only quarterback to win a playoff game in his first five pro seasons.

"Joe's record speaks for itself," Evans said. "He does not get the credit he deserves for how important he is to making the Ravens' offense go."

A part of Evans will share in the Ravens' excitement if they win Sunday "after fully understanding what it feels like to be on the losing side."

"Life brings you highs and lows," he said, "and you have to keep that in perspective."

    Te'o mentioned 'girlfriend' twice recently

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) ? Not once but twice after he supposedly discovered his online girlfriend of three years never even existed, Notre Dame All-American linebacker Manti Te'o perpetuated the heartbreaking story about her death.

An Associated Press review of news coverage found that the Heisman Trophy runner-up talked about his doomed love in a Web interview on Dec. 8 and again in a newspaper interview published Dec. 10. He and the university said Wednesday that he learned on Dec. 6 that it was all a hoax, that not only wasn't she dead, she wasn't real.

On Thursday, a day after Te'o's inspiring, playing-through-heartache story was exposed as a bizarre lie, Te'o and Notre Dame faced questions from sports writers and fans about whether he really was duped, as he claimed, or whether he and the university were complicit in the hoax and misled the public, perhaps to improve his chances of winning the Heisman.

Yahoo sports columnist Dan Wetzel said the case has "left everyone wondering whether this was really the case of a na?ve football player done wrong by friends or a fabrication that has yet to play to its conclusion."

Gregg Doyel, national columnist for CBSSports.com, was more direct.

"Nothing about this story has been comprehensible, or logical, and that extends to what happens next," he wrote. "I cannot comprehend Manti Te'o saying anything that could make me believe he was a victim."

On Wednesday, Te'o and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick said the player was drawn into a virtual romance with a woman who used the phony name Lennay Kekua, and was fooled into believing she died of leukemia in September. They said his only contact with the woman was via the Internet and telephone.

Te'o also lost his grandmother ? for real ? the same day his girlfriend supposedly died, and his role in leading Notre Dame to its best season in decades endeared him to fans and put him at the center of college football's biggest feel-good story of the year.

Relying on information provided by Te'o's family members, the South Bend Tribune reported in October that Te'o and Kekua first met, in person, in 2009, and that the two had also gotten together in Hawaii, where Te'o grew up.

Sports Illustrated posted a previously unpublished transcript of a one-on-one interview with Te'o from Sept. 23. In it, he goes into great detail about his relationship with Kekua and her physical ailments. He also mentioned meeting her for the first time after a game in California.

"We met just, ummmm, just she knew my cousin. And kind of saw me there so. Just kind of regular," he told SI.

Among the outstanding questions Thursday: Why didn't Te'o ever clarify the nature of his relationship as the story took on a life of its own?

Te'o's agent, Tom Condon, said the athlete had no plans to make any public statements Thursday in Bradenton, Fla., where he has been training with other NFL hopefuls at the IMG Academy.

Notre Dame said Te'o found out that Kekua was not a real person through a phone call he received at an awards ceremony in Orlando, Fla., on Dec. 6. He told Notre Dame coaches about the situation on Dec. 26.

The AP's media review turned up two instances during that gap when the football star mentioned Kekua in public.

Te'o was in New York for the Heisman presentation on Dec. 8 and, during an interview before the ceremony that ran on the WSBT.com, the website for a South Bend TV station, Te'o said: "I mean, I don't like cancer at all. I lost both my grandparents and my girlfriend to cancer. So I've really tried to go to children's hospitals and see, you know, children."

In a column that first ran in The Los Angeles Times, on Dec. 10, Te'o recounted why he played a few days after he found out Kekua died in September, and the day she was supposedly buried.

"She made me promise, when it happened, that I would stay and play," he said on Dec. 9 while attending a ceremony in Newport Beach, Calif., for the Lott Impact Awards.

On Wednesday, when Deadspin.com broke the story, Swarbrick said Notre Dame did not go public with its findings sooner because it expected the Te'o family to come forward first.

Asked if the NCAA was monitoring the Te'o story for possible rules violations, NCAA President Mark Emmert said:

"We don't know anything more than you do," he told reporters at the organization's convention in Dallas. "We're learning about this through the stories just the same as you are. But we have to wait and see what really transpired there. It's obviously (a) very disturbing story and it's hard to tell where the facts lie at this point.

"But Notre Dame is obviously looking into it and there will be a lot more to come forward. Right now, it just looks ... well, we don't know what the facts are, so I shouldn't comment beyond that."

Reporters were turned away at the main gate of IMG's sprawling, secure complex. Te'o remained on the grounds, said a person familiar with situation who spoke on condition of anonymity because neither Te'o nor IMG authorized the release of the information.

"This whole thing is so nutsy that I believe it only could have happened at Notre Dame, where mythology trumps common sense on a daily basis. ... Given the choice between reality and fiction, Notre Dame always will choose fiction," sports writer Rick Telander said in the Chicago Sun-Times.

"Which brings me to what I believe is the real reason Te'o and apparently his father, at least went along with this scheme: the Heisman Trophy.

Chicago Tribune columnist John Kass blasted both Te'o and Notre Dame.

"When your girlfriend dying of leukemia after suffering a car crash tells you she loves you, even if it might help you win the Heisman Trophy, you check it out," he said.

He said the university's failure to call a news conference and go public sooner means "Notre Dame is complicit in the lie."

"The school fell in love with the Te'o girlfriend myth," he wrote.

    Dreamliner grounded in Japan

Jan. 16: The Dreamliner, considered the future of commercial aviation and ordered in bulk by Air India, has been grounded for safety checks by the two biggest airlines in Japan after an emergency landing lengthened a string of snags.

All Nippon Airways (ANA) said a Boeing 787 passenger jet was forced to land at Takamatsu airport in western Japan when a cockpit message showed battery problems and a burning smell was detected in the cockpit and the cabin.

Japan?s transport ministry said it received notices from ANA, which operates 17 of the jets, and Japan Airlines, which has seven, that all their 787s would not be flying. The voluntary grounding means Air India is the sole airline in Asia, other than Qatar Airways, flying the 787s now.

The Indian civil aviation regulator today said it would conduct a safety review of the plane but had no plans to immediately ground the aircraft in service with Air India. Several other airlines have ordered around 850 of the new aircraft, though all have not been delivered yet.

Air India, which has taken delivery of six of the 27 Dreamliners it had ordered, flies the plane to Dubai, Paris and Frankfurt on the international circuit and on several domestic metro routes.

ANA said instruments aboard the domestic flight indicated a battery error, triggering emergency warnings to the pilots. All 129 passengers and eight crew evacuated via the plane?s inflatable chutes. One person was taken to hospital with minor hip injuries.

A transport ministry official described the incident as ?highly serious? ? language used in international safety circles as indicating there could have been an accident. This is the latest in a line of mishaps ? fuel leaks, a battery fire, wiring problem, brake computer glitch and cracked cockpit window ? to hit the 787 in recent days.

The two airlines said they would decide tomorrow whether to resume Dreamliner flights the following day.

The Dreamliner is Boeing?s newest and most technologically advanced jet, and the US company is counting heavily on its success. The 787, which has a list price of $207 million (around Rs 1,138 crore), represents a leap in the way planes are designed and built. The plane is made with lightweight composite materials instead of aluminium.

The Dreamliner relies more than any other modern airliner on electrical signals to help power nearly everything the plane does. Electrical power operates hydraulic pumps, de-ices the wings, pressurises the cabin and handles other tasks. The plane has electric, not hydraulic, brakes.

It is also the first Boeing plane to use lighter and rechargeable lithium ion batteries, which charge faster and can be moulded to space-saving shapes compared to other airplane batteries.

The use of the new battery technology is among the cost-saving features of the 787, which Boeing says burns 20 per cent less fuel than rival jets using older technology.

But Boeing engineers have acknowledged that there is a risk of fire if the batteries are overcharged. Once alight, they are difficult to put out as the chemicals produce oxygen, Boeing?s chief engineer for the 787, Mike Sinnett, had said last week. He said then that lithium ion was not the only choice of battery, but ?it was the right choice?.

ANA, the Japanese airline, said the battery in the forward cargo hold was the same lithium-ion type as the one involved in a fire on another Dreamliner at a US airport last week.

Some have suggested Boeing?s rush to get planes built after a three-year delay resulted in the recent problems, a charge the company strenuously denies.

Boeing has sought to ease concerns about the plane?s design and reliability, and has insisted it was no more trouble-prone than other new commercial airplanes.

The earliest manufactured jets of any new aircraft usually have problems and airlines run higher risks in flying them first, said Brendan Sobie, the Singapore-based chief analyst at CAPA-Center for Aviation. Since about half the 787 fleet is in Japan, more problems are cropping up there.

But others pointed out that Boeing would run into perception problems. ?I think you?re nearing the tipping point where they need to regard this as a serious crisis,? said Richard Aboulafia, a senior analyst with the Teal Group in Fairfax, Virginia. ?This is going to change people?s perception of the aircraft if they don?t act quickly.?

Last week, the US Federal Aviation Administration ordered a comprehensive review of the Dreamliner?s manufacturing and design, with a special focus on the plane?s electrical systems. The review is unusual, just 15 months after the Dreamliner entered service following a lengthy certification process by the FAA.

As many Japanese-based manufacturers supply parts for the Dreamliner, any delays or cancellations of orders would be a shock for Japanese industry, too.

In Delhi, Arun Mishra, the director-general of civil aviation, said: ?We will review the situation in consultation with Boeing and Air India.?

The Indian regulator is also awaiting reports of the FAA as well as Boeing.

?I am in touch with Boeing and they are going to give me an update on the electrical problems they suffered in Japan,? Mishra said. ?We are not having any problem with our Dreamliners. The problems we had earlier have been fixed,? he added.

In August last year, the front cargo door of one of Air India?s Dreamliners had a glitch. In September, a cooling unit meant to prevent power-generating equipment of the aircraft from overheating, malfunctioned on a Dreamliner in Delhi.

After the faults were rectified, the Dreamliners have been flying regularly. Boeing has designated a team in Delhi for trouble-shooting.

Thermometer Attachment For iOS And Android Devices Measures Temperature Of Food And More

We encounter a lot of different temperatures in our lives. We might work with hot (or cold) material in our careers, or more commonly, we need to test the temperature of food while cooking. Regardless of when and where we need to measure temperatures, there hasn?t been a tremendous amount of innovation in the thermometer space during this whole technology revolution we find ourselves in the middle of.

A company called Atrium Engineering is hoping to change that with a Kickstarter crowd funding campaign, however. Atrium has created what they call a ?Smart Thermometer?, a physical thermometer attachment that plugs into your iPhone, iPad, or Android device, and works in conjunction with an app on the device to tell you the temperature of anything the thermometer touches.

Now, it should be noted right up front that this thermometer is not a medical device and wouldn?t be suitable for measuring a child?s temperature, but it is perfectly safe and useful for measuring the temperature of food that is being cooked, gauging whether a surface is safe to touch, or in use with science experiments around the house. The probe on the temperature sensor is stainless steel and food grade, and as the device is waterproof, it can be cleaned (as you certainly would want to after testing raw poultry, for example.)

As this is a Kickstarter campaign, the company only has prototypes of the device as of now, and they?re hoping to raise funding that will allow them to go to production with the real thing. With less than a week remaining in the campaign, Smart Thermometer was less than 20 percent of the way to achieving its $100,000 fundraising goal. A $55 contribution will back the project and net you a first-release?thermometer?in either black or pink once the project is funded. I?m not sure how this compares to other food thermometers on the market, but the argument that Atrium Engineering makes is the device should theoretically pay for itself because unlike other thermometer devices, you don?t need to buy new batteries for the Smart Thermometer, as it draws its own power from your mobile device.

If you love amping up the ?geek? on every day devices and think this sounds like a better way to measure heat, head on over to Kickstarter and support the Smart Thermometer project.

    Building Stronger Blended Families ? Napierfamilycentre - maivys& ...

    January 10, 2013 at 9:22 am

shoesHow was your holidays? Relax with the family? ?Good time with the kids?

Christmas time and summer holidays can be exhausting for couples step parenting and as we head into the New Year perhaps there?s a resolution of ?there?s got to be an easier way!? For some blended families it can feel like your feelings and confidence has actually been put through a kitchen blender rather than the harmonious melding of family life.

Children may be showing their feelings ? their hurt, disappointment, insecurity and anger at their own situation through behaviour and home becomes a minefield.

Step mothers in particular can still get a bad rap with the ?evil witch? label immortalised by ?Cinderella and Snow White. It?s easy to fall into the habit of labeling the ?other? parent especially when there?s tension, disagreement and a history of hurt. The name-calling sport may feel harmless and tongue-in-cheek at the time but it is not healthy for the children and ultimately it prevents children being able to rightfully enjoy home-life ? whichever home that may be.

This very complexity means that Napier Family Centre?s Step Family course is for couples. Heather Osborne, Parenting Education Coordinator at Napier Family Centre says couples have to come together to get value from the programme. This is different from our other courses where, although it is great if both parents can come, strategies and ideas can be successfully followed through individually.

The reality is that the step parents are trying to build their own new relationship within the context of being a parent already. It is hard to find the space to develop this new partnership as per our expectations of a relationship from pre children days. As well, the children yearn for the security of a strong family unit and may fantasise about their biological parents getting back together. Heather says children?s behaviour may reflect?their grief from the separation of their parents.

She suggests that finding ways to honour and understand traditions from each other?s past as well as actively creating and building on new family traditions is key to finding a new strength as a step family.

Remember that ?evil witch? label? It?s time to let it go. We know as parents that children respond positively to adults who are calm, approachable and have good coping strategies when people are getting stressed. Most importantly, the new step-family life, complex as it is, can grow in new strength, give children security and be rewarding for you.
