Munoz leads after 1st round at HSBC Champions

SINGAPORE (AP) ? Spain's Azahara Munoz shot a 7-under 65 Thursday for a two-stroke lead after the first round of the HSBC Women's Champions, which features 17 of the top 20 LPGA players.

Munoz played in the day's first group and finished with seven birdies. Five players at Sentosa Golf Club shared second at 67: Stacy Lewis, Karin Sjodin, Lizette Salas, Pornanong Phatlum and Sun Young Yoo.

Munoz is coming off her strongest season on tour, winning her first title at the Sybase Match Play Championship and enjoying nine top-10 finishes.

"I don't know what it is but my best three rounds on tour have been first tee time," she said. "I really like it. You don't have to wait, it's super nice, the greens are perfect. I think it gets me going."

Paula Creamer was in a four-way tie at 68 despite an injured right shoulder from a car accident. The five-car accident happened on the way to the airport after the Honda LPGA tournament in Thailand.

Two other players, Ai Miyazato and Suzann Pettersen, sustained minor injuries in the crash. Miyazato pulled out of the HSBC Champions on Wednesday, citing stiffness in her back, neck and shoulder.

Also at 68 were top-ranked Yani Tseng of Taiwan, Danielle Kang and Chella Choi.

Tseng, a five-time major winner, was five shots off the lead before sinking a 25-foot putt for eagle on the 18th hole. Tseng hasn't won a tournament in nearly a year, but she has started the 2013 season with a second-place finish at the Australian Open and a tie for third at Thailand last weekend.

She said she made a bet with her manager, Naya Hsu, on Thursday morning to better motivate herself. If she scored a 68 or better, Hsu agreed to go skydiving with her in Hawaii.

"When that putt dropped in, I was so happy," Tseng said. "I was looking for her. I saw her face, I think she's going to cry.

"I think it feels good because I haven't had that feeling for a long time," she said. "The last two weeks, kind of a little rushed, trying to play well on the first day. And today I've been patient because I know it's only the first day, I still have three days left."

Creamer was just happy to be on the course after her accident. She said she jammed her shoulder when she hit the dashboard of the car and suffered whiplash after slamming her head off the headrest.

"At the beginning of the round, I really couldn't feel my right side and I didn't know if I was going to be able to even go," she said. "I thought if I could get through the first five holes, I would be OK. I have no expectations whatsoever this week," she said.

Second-ranked Na Yeon Choi, who is trying to close in on Tseng's No. 1 ranking, shot a 69. Michelle Wie, South Korea's Jiyai Shin and Australia's Karrie Webb were at 71, with Pettersen at 73. Defending champion Angela Stanford had a quadruple bogey on the par-4 13th en route to a 76.

Japanese disaster films highlight victims' stories

TOKYO (AP) ? The unnerving clicks of dosimeters are constant as people wearing white protective gear quickly visit the radiated no-go zones of decayed farms and empty storefronts. Evacuees huddle on blankets on gymnasium floors, waiting futilely for word of compensation and relocation.

Such scenes fill the flurry of independent films inspired by Japan's March 2011 catastrophe that tell stories of regular people who became overnight victims ? stories the creators feel are being ignored by mainstream media and often silenced by the authorities.

Nearly two years after the quake and tsunami disaster, the films are an attempt by the creative minds of Japan's movie industry not only to confront the horrors of the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl, but also to empower and serve as a legacy for the victims by telling their stories for international audiences.

The impact these films have on the global and Japanese audiences could perhaps even help change Japan, the directors say.

What's striking is that many of the works convey a prevailing message: The political, scientific and regulatory establishment isn't telling the whole truth about the nuclear disaster. And much of the public had been in the past ignorant and uncaring about Fukushima.

And so the films were needed, the auteurs say. The people leading Japan were too evasive about the true consequences of the multiple meltdowns at the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant ? minimizing people's suffering, playing down health risks and shrugging off accountability for past go-go pro-nuclear government policies.

"Japan's response is ambiguous and irresponsible. But, meanwhile, time is passing," said Atsushi Funahashi, director of "Nuclear Nation," which documents the story of the residents of Futaba, Fukushima, the town where the crippled nuclear plant is located.

The entire town became a no-go zone ? contaminated by radiation in the air, water and ground after the tsunami destroyed the plant's cooling systems, causing meltdowns in three reactors. Decommissioning the reactors is expected to take decades.

Of all Fukushima communities forced to evacuate, Futaba chose the farthest spot from the nuclear plant ? an abandoned high school in Saitama prefecture, near Tokyo. That choice Funahashi feels highlights a keen awareness of the dangers of radiation and distrust of officials as the town had been repeatedly told the plant was safe.

The outburst of post-disaster filmmaking includes Americans living in or visiting Japan, such as "Surviving Japan," by Christopher Noland, "Pray for Japan," by Stuart Levy, and "In the Grey Zone" and "A2" by Ian Thomas Ash.

"The Tsunami and the Cherry Blossom," by Lucy Walker, a Briton, was nominated for the 2012 Academy Award for short documentaries.

Both Levy and Noland volunteered in the disaster areas. Ash's documentaries focus on the plight of the children who continue to live near the nuclear plant and the frightened mothers who suspect the medical authorities are lying about the safety of radiation.

"I believe it is time for Japanese citizens to not just rebuild but reinvent their country with new leadership," said Noland, who like many others worries about the children. "I want the people of Japan to know I stand with them."

Funahashi's "Nuclear Nation," shown at film festivals including Berlin, Seoul and Edinburgh, Scotland, intentionally played out its scenes in real time to communicate the helplessness of the days slipping away for displaced people. Camera close-ups show the cold lunches in boxes being handed out, day by day.

Funahashi is outraged that, so many months later, the Japanese government has yet to properly compensate the 160,000 people who had to leave their homes near Fukushima Dai-ichi. The government has set up tiny temporary housing and has doled out aid calculated to approximate the minimum wage.

In one moving scene in "Nuclear Nation," one of the displaced residents, Masayoshi Watanabe, lights up a cigarette in a car and talks directly into the camera, strangely more movie-like than any Hollywood actor.

"Our town is gone. It's just land," he says pensively.

The movie started with 1,400 people in the school building, but that has dwindled lately to about 100. Funahashi is determined to keep filming until the last person leaves.

"The evacuated people are being forgotten," said Funahashi. "And criminal responsibility is also being forgotten."

Reputed director Sion Sono has also written and directed the sarcastically titled "The Land of Hope," departing from his usual ruthlessly violent avant-garde for a soap-operatic account of an elderly couple who commit suicide after a nuclear catastrophe set in the fictitious future.

Sono's "Himizu," a haunting coming-of-age film set in a surreal Japan hopelessly covered with tsunami debris, is more typical Sono in its raw dark style, criticizing the adult world as irresponsibly cruel and abusive to this nation's younger generation that must cope with radiation.

Yojyu Matsubayashi took a more standard documentary approach for his "Fukushima: Memories of the Lost Landscape," interviewing people who were displaced in the Fukushima town of Minami Soma.

He followed them into temporary shelters in cluttered gymnasiums and accompanied their harried visits to abandoned homes with the gentle patience of a videojournalist. Japanese mainstream media had abandoned the no-go zone, and he felt it was up to freelance reporters like him to tell the true story, especially for the helpless elderly.

"I've been making documentaries for some time, but when the nuclear accident happened, I felt I had to be there," he said. "Once I got there, I knew I had to be there for a long time and express the eternal from that one spot."

His main message?

He wouldn't have made a movie if it were all that simple, Matsubayashi said quietly.

"It was human arrogance that led to this disaster, this crisis," he said. "We thought we could control even nature. And that's why this happened. Our lives were dependent on electricity from Fukushima. We shouldn't be making excuses that we didn't know, that we didn't care. Maybe that's why I made this movie."

Others are finding their work is drawing more attention after Fukushima.

Hitomi Kamanaka, who has devoted her life to documenting radiation issues, such as the struggles over a Japanese nuclear reprocessing plant and sicknesses in Iraq suspected of being caused by uranium bullets, is in the spotlight like never before.

Her 2012 film "Living With Internal Exposure" compiled the views of four medical experts who studied radiation's effects in Chernobyl, Hiroshima, Iraq and Fukushima, warning about the health damage that radiation can cause.

Akiyoshi Imazeki began shooting "Kalina's Apple, Forest of Chernobyl" in 2003, a film about a girl who falls sick after eating the radiated apples grown on her grandmother's farm. It was a film he believed in, but he had never hoped for massive appeal.

His post-Fukushima 2011 re-edit ? with its juxtaposition of pastoral lakes and forests, so much like Fukushima landscapes, with the forlorn faces of children hospitalized for cancer ? is striking home with many Japanese.

The film was shot quietly like many Japanese classics, and the cast is entirely Belarusian and Russian. But the dozens of screenings in Fukushima are drawing positive reviews.

"They all cry," said Imazeki.

Imazeki is convinced the parallels between Fukushima and Chernobyl are striking, and stressed "Kalina's Apple, Forest of Chernobyl" dramatizes the tragedy of radiation.

"The invisibility adds to the turmoil," he said. "Families can no longer live normal happy lives."

Samsung re-starts copier, announces Passbook for Android

Samsung announced their new Samsung Wallet today. The video above is from frAndroid, and here's Simon Sage's background on it from Android Central:

Samsung has announced a new API for developers to help manage event tickets, boarding passes, memberships, and coupons. Samsung Wallet will be a new application which brings all of these types of content into one place. Time and location-based push notifications will help users get a hold of the ticketing information.

If that sounds -- and looks -- familiar, it's because Apple already announced it back in June of 2012 as Passbook.

Samsung re-starts copier, announces Passbook for Android

It's not the first time Samsung's copied an Apple product, it's probably not even the hundred-and-first, though given their bolder, more authentic releases over the last year, it did seem to be something they were growing out of. Apple isn't adverse to copying features from Android either, though historically they haven't been as consistent or blatant about it.

Like with black slab designs I'm pretty much over any obsession with who's copying who, but I do think this smacks of laziness and a lack of pride.

I'm happy for Samsung users that they'll get to enjoy a feature that's been nifty, if limited so far, on iOS 6. But it shows Samsung really doesn't give a shit. Passbook is certainly not the only way to tackle a digital wallet, and it may not even be the best way. By relentlessly copying, Samsung isn't moving the technology forward. They're not raising the bar. They're not making a wallet interface and experience so good anyone is begging for Apple to copy them.

I own a Nexus 4 and Nexus 7, which have LG and Asus designs, and Google software, and I'm currently waiting for an HTC One (love HTC). I have little interest in Samsung products, and it's mostly because of stuff like this. And I want to have interest in Samsung. I want a better Samsung.

Obviously Samsung's making all the money in Android these days, and their upcoming Galaxy S4 will no doubt be an unprecedented hit, so they probably don't care.

But they really, really should.

Newt Pheromones Put Females into Mating Frenzy

It may be time to crown male newts as the female-arousing kings ? the amphibians release powerful pheromones that put females in the mood to mate with practically any adult around, even other females from different newt species, new research shows.

"The females react as if they're under the influence of drugs," said lead researcher Franky Bossuyt, a biologist at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (Free University of Brussels) in Belgium. "We were convinced that if we put in a plastic toy moving at the right speed, they would follow it."

Newts typically live on land as adults and mate exclusively in water. During the breeding season, males adopt intense color patterns and grow skin extensions on their legs, tail and crest. These changes are thought to make males more attractive to females.

When two newts meet, the male releases pheromones and waves his tail, sending the chemical signals to the female. They then play out a mating dance akin to a short game of tag, with the female following after the male. To let him know she's ready to get down to business, the female touches the male's tail with her nose, prompting him to deposit his spermatophore ? a jellylike mass containing sperm??onto a substrate in the water, such as a leaf. Finally, he leads the female over the sperm packet, which sticks to her cloaca (the orifice leading to intestinal, reproductive and urinary tracts), resulting in insemination.

For years, scientists thought males waved their tails to disperse "attractant pheromones," which broadcast the male's presence and bring newt pairs together. But there's a problem with this idea: The newts have already introduced themselves before the male waves his tail. "The females are not attracted to the males by the tail-waving, at least with the newts I've seen," Bossuyt said.

Instead, the researchers thought, the tail fanning might disperse "courtship pheromones" that alter the female's behavior to stimulate mating.

Newt mating game

To find out, researchers placed male-female pairs of alpine newts (Ichthyosaura alpestris) and palmate newts (Lissotriton helveticus) into water-filled plastic containers for receptivity tests. The newts passed the test and were ready for the next phase if they completed the courtship ritual (females weren't allowed to complete the insemination).

The team then put two-female pairs into pheromone-infused courtship?water; some pairs consisted of two alpine newts, other pairs had one female of each species. If the water contained pheromones from a male of her species, the female would desperately try to court the other female. In some cases, two female alpine newts tried to follow each other, resulting in the pair circling one another. In some two-species trials, one female chased after another, even as the unreceptive partner tried to escape the container. [See video of the sex-crazed newts]

But the amphibians didn't remain patient forever. Not receiving the spermatophore she expected, the courting female eventually started waving her tail at her partner, possibly sending out pheromones.

Frustrated females

"Female tale-waving?is a kind of frustration behavior," Bossuyt explained, adding that females also tail-waved in receptivity tests to get males to continue courtship after researchers removed the spermatophores. In natural settings, this behavior probably happens only in uncommon situations, such as when a male is too tired for courtship. "So female tail-waving likely happens in nature, but you will not easily observe it," he said.

The results suggest the pheromones don't just announce the male's arrival, given how they induced such an overpowering mating reaction in the females. The researchers think males may have evolved such potent pheromones out of necessity, since newts often breed in turbid water with other newt species, making it difficult to mate based on vision alone.

It seems a male newt's flashy appearance matters little to females: It's all about his smell.

The research was detailed online this month in the journal PLOS ONE.

A 1:30 a.m. line... for Van Gogh

The works of Vincent Van Gogh are still a vibrant part of pop culture more than a hundred years after his death.

By Donna Bryson,?Contributor / February 27, 2013

"Lust for Life," a novelized version of Vincent van Gogh's life by Irving Stone written in 1934, was the basis of a 1956 movie starring Kirk Douglas. Tim Roth took on the artist role in Robert Altman's 1990 film "Vincent & Theo." Van Gogh was even the subject of a hit folk song in the 1970s, "Vincent," by Don McLean.

Van Gogh, an inventive, dedicated, and struggling painter in his lifetime, continues to be a pop culture phenomenon 123 years after his death. That much was clear recently at the Denver Art Museum, which kept a Van Gogh exhibition open for 40 hours straight during the last two days of the show to accommodate visitors.

Louis van Tilborgh, a senior researcher at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum, says one source of the artist's enduring and broad appeal is simply his paintings, which continue to delight viewers with their bright colors, familiar landscapes, and thickly applied paint. Mr. Van Tilborgh says Van Gogh also connects across the generations through the lively and perceptive letters he wrote to his younger brother Theo, and others. Van Gogh's determination to achieve something in his life and his art despite his personal struggles resonates with many, he adds. "He tried so hard," Van Tilborgh says.

At 1:30 a.m. on a Sunday during the Denver Art Museum's last weekend of "Becoming Van Gogh," the downtown streets were dark and quiet. But inside, early morning could have been early afternoon as a steady flow of visitors drank in the visions of Van Gogh's swirls. The three-month show, which examined the artist's evolution and influences through more than 70 paintings and drawings, had been sold out nearly every day of its run.

For art teacher Andrea Crane, it was her third visit. This time she had brought her husband, Dave, a personal chef. Mr. Crane said he learned something of Van Gogh's fierce will, and was glad he had made the early morning visit, even though his own job starts at the crack of dawn.

Attendance was so steady during the 40-hour stretch that staff had trouble keeping the hand-held audio guide devices charged. Beyond the artist's prolific but short career ? he produced more than 2,100 artworks, including 37 self-portraits over two decades ? Van Gogh himself is as fascinating as the canvases he painted. Was he really crazy? Did he cut off his own ear? Was his death a suicide? Scholars are still exploring the answers.

Timothy Standring, the curator behind the Denver show, allows only that Van Gogh had a "restless life" and that a study of it makes for "a compelling story."

A story, it appears, that is as endlessly enchanting as a starry sky on a dark night.

Naming Pluto's moon 'Vulcan' only logical, says William Shatner

William Shatner proposed 'Vulcan' as the name of one of Pluto's recently discovered moons, and more than 100,000 'Star Trek' fans seem to concur.

By Miriam Kramer,?SPACE.com / February 25, 2013

A pair of small moons orbiting Pluto named Nix and Hydra were discovered by NASA's Hubble Space Telescope in 2005. The two moons are roughly 5,000 times fainter than Pluto and are about two to three times farther from Pluto than its large moon,

For William Shatner, the actor who portrayed "Star Trek" captain James T. Kirk, naming one of Pluto's moons "Vulcan" is the only logical choice, and more than 100,000 apparent Trek fans agree.?

Shatner proposed "Vulcan" as a potential?name for one of Pluto's moons, the recently discovered P4 and P5, as part of the Pluto Rocks contest launched by the SETI Institute on Feb. 11. Now, Vulcan?? which on Star Trek is the home planet of Kirk's pointy-eared first officer Spock?? has a commanding lead worthy of Kirk, it seems.

"I think we are over 100k votes for Vulcan on PlutoRocks.com that's wonderful!," Shatner wrote from his Twitter, @WilliamShatner yesterday (Feb. 19).

Vulcan is currently in the lead, taking more than 100,000 of the 325,800 votes cast. Cerberus and Styx are running in second and third with about 75,000 and 70,000 votes respectively, but officials at SETI will take other factors into consideration when deciding what to name the moons.??[See photos of Pluto and its moons]

Shatner also suggested that SETI add Romulus ? the Roman god of fire and the twin brother of Remus in the Roman foundation myth ? to the list of possibilities, but?SETI officials nixed that name because it was also the name of an asteroid's moon elsewhere in the solar system. In Star Trek lore, Romulus is the home planet of the Romulan alien race.?

Pluto has five moons?that astronomers currently know of. Scientists first caught sight of Pluto's largest moon Charon in 1978, but it was not until 2005 that astronomers discovered two other moons (Nix and Hydra) using the Hubble Space Telescope.

The moon P5 was discovered in 2012, also using the Hubble telescope. The moon P4 was discovered in 2011.

Once?voting on the Pluto Rocks website?closes on Feb. 25, SETI will review the contest and make recommendations for naming P4 and P5. Ultimately, the International Astronomical Union is responsible for naming the moons. While the IAU will take the contest results into consideration, the organization still has final say over what the tiny moons are named.

A new batch of written-in names was also added to the list on Feb. 14, two days after Vulcan was accepted on Feb. 12.

"By the way, if you are a fan of one of our eight most recent additions to the ballot, please don't give up!" Mark Showalter of SETI wrote in a blog on Feb. 18. "They may be way behind in the voting, but we realize that they had a big disadvantage by not appearing till Thursday. A late surge of support is something we would surely notice."

SETI's Pluto moon name voting polls will remain open on?plutorocks.com?until 12 p.m. EST (1700 GMT) on Feb. 25.

HBT: Marlins' owner Loria remains clueless

For the first time in months, Jeff Loria met the press. He did so at last night?s Marlins game. Joe Capozzi of the Palm Beach Post has a detailed rundown of the interview. This was a the highlight for me. Loria was asked if he realizes fans hate him:

I have a sense of it. I?m sorry that we?ve built this amazing ballpark and fans are feeling the way they do but we did this for a reason ? we weren?t going anywhere and I think anybody who is a baseball person will realize that after two years that we had, we had to do something. We had to do something quickly and swiftly and bold.

The phrase ?? we?ve built this amazing ballpark and ?? in between ?I?m sorry? and ?fans feeling the way we do? pretty much sums it up. He may have well just called everyone ingrates. Of course he left out the part where those fans (a) paid for the ballpark against their will; (b) were duped into ?a whole new Marlins? thing, complete with all that new merchandise the team sold last year; and (c) were then treated to another talent liquidation.

Beyond that, Loria gives his side of the story regarding Jose Reyes? claim that Loria told him to buy a house in Miami a couple of days before he was traded. He-said-he-said, I suppose.

He also notes that the Marlins will not be making a long term offer to Giancarlo Stanton this season. Which isn?t the most surprising thing in the world given that he?s not yet arbitration eligible. But since this is the Marlins and they?ll trade anyone at anytime, it leaves the door open for him to be traded.

Ronda Rousey and Liz Carmouche worked harder to prove themselves, teaching me to do the same

?Women always have to work harder to prove themselves.?

When Liz Carmouche said this at the UFC 157 open workouts on Wednesday, I couldn?t help but smile. Carmouche served in the Marines, is a lesbian, and is now a fighter in the UFC. She understands like few others that a woman?s work of proving herself is never done.

UFC bantamweight champion Ronda Rousey gets this, too. She had to work harder than few other fighters in UFC history in not just preparing for her fight but in selling it. During the run-up to her main event bout with Carmouche, the first ever UFC women?s fight, Rousey trained three times a day and was interviewed by everyone from Time Magazine to Larry King. Camera crews for the UFC?s ?Primetime? and ?Countdown? shows, as well as HBO's ?Real Sports,? followed her. Rousey joked after she won the fight with a first-round armbar that she wants a week off from talking about herself.

As a woman working in the male-dominated world of covering sports, I know this, too. I?ve been covering MMA for six years, five for Yahoo! Sports. But I am still questioned, dismissed and sometimes even attacked because I dare cover a ?man?s sport.? Whenever I am confronted with sexism, whether subtle or vulgar, I have to take a deep breath and consider my response. As a woman, I have to work harder to prove myself, and remember one slip of the tongue can wreck it for me and other women who want to cover MMA.

UFC president Dana White complimented Rousey and Carmouche for dealing with so much media attention like professionals, and said he wished every fighter would be such a pro. But there?s something as a man that White could never understand about the work Carmouche and Rousey put into their preparation for the bout.

They had to work like professionals and show up and be engaging at every single press appearance. Women have to work harder to prove themselves, and the last thing female fighters need is a reputation for being difficult with the media. Their hard work paid off, as they brought more attention to this fight than anyone ? even White ? ever expected.

But their ability to handle all of the attention, both negative and positive, taught me something, too. Rousey and Carmouche showed me exactly how to act when confronted by those who question us because of our gender. They didn?t worry about what doubters or misogynists or homophobes had to say. They worried about working harder to prove themselves.

When Rousey escaped Carmouche?s neck crank, the Honda Center became the noisiest building I had ever stepped foot in. The 15,525 fans stood and cheered at the top of their lungs for two women. Women had arrived in the UFC, and Carmouche and Rousey showed what two women who worked harder to prove themselves could accomplish.

Thank you, Ronda and Liz. Thank you for finally busting through that glass ceiling. Thank you for showing young women that they can do any sport ? even ones that involve bruised faces and busted teeth. Thank you for working harder to prove yourselves, and reminding me to do the same.

Senate to vote on moving ahead on Hagel nod

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A deeply divided Senate is moving toward a vote on President Barack Obama's contentious choice of Chuck Hagel to head the Defense Department, with the former Republican senator on track to win confirmation after a protracted political fight.

Twelve days after Republicans stalled the nomination, the Senate was slated to vote Tuesday on proceeding with the Hagel selection after GOP lawmakers signaled late Monday they would end their delaying tactics. If Hagel gets the necessary votes, it would just be a matter of time for a simple up-or-down vote, although Republicans could insist on the maximum 30 hours of debate before a final vote.

If confirmed, Hagel would succeed Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and join Obama's retooled national security team just days before automatic, across-the-board budget cuts hit the Pentagon.

Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Carl Levin, D-Mich., said he was optimistic about the vote's outcome and said it was critical for the Senate to act quickly.

"Given sequestration, it's really important that we have a secretary of defense who is in place when that hits, if it hits," Levin told reporters Monday. "I want to still say 'if' because I'm a perennial optimist."

Hagel's nomination bitterly split the Senate, with Republicans turning on their former GOP colleague and Democrats standing by Obama's nominee.

The president got no points with the GOP for tapping the former two-term senator and twice-wounded Vietnam combat veteran. Republican lawmakers excoriated Hagel over his past statements and votes. They argued that he was too critical of Israel and too compromising with Iran. They cast the Nebraskan as a radical far out of the mainstream.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., clashed with his onetime friend over his opposition to President George W. Bush's decision to send an extra 30,000 troops to Iraq in 2007 at a point when the war seemed in danger of being lost. Hagel, who voted to authorize military force in Iraq, later opposed the conflict, comparing it to Vietnam and arguing that it shifted the focus from Afghanistan.

McCain called Hagel unqualified for the Pentagon job even though he once described him as fit for a Cabinet post.

Republicans also challenged Hagel about a May 2012 study that he co-authored for the advocacy group Global Zero, which called for an 80 percent reduction of U.S. nuclear weapons and the eventual elimination of all the world's nuclear arms.

The group argued that with the Cold War over, the United States can reduce its total nuclear arsenal to 900 without sacrificing security. Currently, the U.S. and Russia have about 5,000 warheads each, either deployed or in reserve. Both countries are on track to reduce their deployed strategic warheads to 1,550 by 2018, the number set in the New START treaty that the Senate ratified in December 2010.

In an echo of the 2012 presidential campaign, Hagel faced an onslaught of criticism by well-funded, Republican-leaning outside groups that labeled the former senator "anti-Israel" and pressured senators to oppose the nomination. The groups ran television and print ads criticizing Hagel.

Opponents were particularly incensed by Hagel's use of the term "Jewish lobby" to refer to pro-Israel groups. He apologized, saying he should have used another term and should not have said those groups have intimidated members of the Senate into favoring actions contrary to U.S. interests.

The nominee spent weeks reaching out to members of the Senate, meeting individually with lawmakers to address their concerns and seeking to reassure them about his policies.

Hagel's halting and inconsistent performance during some eight hours of testimony at this confirmation hearing last month undercut his cause, but it wasn't a fatal blow.

There was no erosion in Democratic support for the president's choice and Hagel had the backing of three Republicans ? Sens. Thad Cochran of Mississippi, Mike Johanns of Nebraska and Richard Shelby of Alabama. Other Republicans were reluctant to block a president's Cabinet choice from getting an up-or-down vote, fearing the precedent.

Democrats hold a 55-45 edge in the Senate, more than enough to confirm Hagel on a majority vote.

Stocks decline as investors follow Italian vote

(AP) ? Stocks turned lower Monday following signs that Italy could be headed for political gridlock, potentially undermining the country's efforts to reform its economy and rekindling the region's debt crisis.

The Dow Jones industrial average was down 74 points, or 0.5 percent, to 13,926 as of 2:18 p.m. EST. The Standard & Poor's 500 fell 10 points, or 0.7 percent, to 1,505 and the Nasdaq composite dropped 14 points, or 0.4 percent, to 3,148.

Stocks had rallied in the early going as exit polls showed that a center-left coalition in Italy that favored economic reforms in the euro region's third-largest economy was leading in the polls. That gain evaporated after another poll showed that the elections could result in a stalemate in the country's legislature.

"The Italian elections have implications for the credit markets," said Quincy Krosby, market strategist at Prudential. "The ultimate worry is that the credit markets start reacting."

Investors sold Italian government bonds and erased most of an early rally in Italy's stock market as the camp led by former premier Silvio Berlusconi appeared more likely to take control of Italy's Senate, threatening the country's reform efforts.

The yield on Italy's 10-year government bond edged up to 4.43 percent from 4.40 percent. The country's benchmark stock index, the FSTE MIB, rose 0.7 percent, giving up an early gain of 4 percent.

Investors worry about the outcome of Italy's election because it could set off another crisis of confidence in the region's shared currency, the euro. Financial markets in both Europe and the U.S. have swooned at the prospect of Italy or Spain being dragged into the region's government debt troubles, which have led to bailouts of Greece, Ireland and Portugal.

On the New York Stock Exchange, Barnes & Noble rose $1.39, or 10 percent, to $14.90 after founder and chairman Leonard Riggio told the bookseller he is going to try to buy the company's retail business. Hertz advanced $1.12 to $19.85, despite posting a fourth-quarter loss, after the rental car company said that pricing improved, volume rose and it cut costs.

The Standard & Poor's 500 had its first weekly decline of the year last week. Investors sent stocks plunging after minutes from the Federal Reserve's latest policy meeting revealed disagreement over how long to keep buying bonds in an effort to boost the economy.

Fed chairman Ben Bernanke will testify before the U.S. Senate's banking committee Tuesday and again before Congress on Wednesday. Investors will watch to see if he gives any further indications about how long the central bank intends to keep providing stimulus to the economy.

Several reports about consumer confidence and the housing market, scheduled to be published Tuesday, will give investors more information about the state of the economy. Optimism that the housing market is maintaining its recovery have helped underpin a rally in stocks this year.

Many analysts say the Fed's bond-buying program and the resulting low interest rates have been a big driver behind this year's stock rally. The Dow has gained 6.3 percent this year and the S&P 500 5.6 percent, pushing both near record levels. The Dow's record close is 14,164, reaching in October 2007 and the S&P closed as high as 1,565 in the same month.

European stocks also advanced, but gave back much of their early gains. Benchmark indexes rose 0.4 percent in France, 1.5 percent in Germany and 0.8 percent in Spain. Britain's index was up just 0.3 percent after Moody's stripped the country late Friday of its triple-A credit rating.

The yield on the U.S. 10-year Treasury note, which moves inversely to its price, fell five basis points to 1.91 percent.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Southwestern Energy rose 51 cents to $34 after Goldman Sachs added the company to its conviction buy list, saying that the company's shale returns are poised to improve.

? Drugmaker Affymax plunged $14, or 85 percent, to $2.49 after the company recalled its anemia drug following severe allergic reactions and the deaths of some kidney dialysis patients.

?Mead Johnson fell $2.60 to $76.33 after the company said that a new regulation in Hong Kong could affect the company's sales there as well as in mainland China.

PST: Adu still in a bad place as MLS kickoff nears

We are all talking a lot about Major League Soccer this week, league previews and predictions dropping like late winter snow in New England. You sure can?t look at this blog without seeing our latest outlook piece on what to expect from Major League Soccer?s 18th season.

Interesting, however, is the name that isn?t being mentioned: Freddy Adu.

He?s clearly a midfield talent that some club could use. It won?t be in Philadelphia, however, as manager John Hackworth has long made it clear that Adu, still just 23 but somehow in a career crisis moment, isn?t in the PPL Park plans.

The problem is Adu?s salary, more than $500,000 this year. That is proving quite problematic in trade talks within the league; everyone understands the bad place Philadelphia is in here, so they want the Union to foot a big portion of Adu?s high salary.

Philadelphia can buy out the contract, but that has turned into a big game of chicken. Adu and his representatives are taking a hard line, hoping to pin down the Union and get Philly to pay off the entirety of the contract at more than $1 million.

Philadelphia, far from the richest of clubs, is playing hard ball, too. Until further notice, Adu is just working out on his own ? doing nothing to improve his value in finding the next taker, the next club that figures Adu?s talent makes him worth a potential risk in terms of chemistry and how he impacts the salary structure.

(MORE: Union team preview from ProSoccerTalk)

On Fox Soccer Channel?s Goals On Sunday show, Grant Wahl reported this morning that Adu has already turned down moves to Ukraine and South Korea, and that opportunities Mexico may be in play soon, but aren?t at the moment.

(Ukraine and ? South Korea? It?s come to that for young Adu?)

Philadelphia doesn?t need Adu, now blessed with two options at playmaker in Michael Farfan and Roger Torres. But the Union could certainly use the cap relief. And they certainly don?t want to keep paying Adu?s guaranteed salary if they can possibly avoid it.

Oscars Prediction Dartboard: Who Was Wrong-est?

The Oscars may be less consequential than presidential elections, but it?s another opportunity to gamble for predictive bragging rights. Some, such as the Huffington Post?s David Rothschild, have adopted a data-driven, Nate Silver-esque approach, while others simply seem to combine their personal preferences with nebulous theories of the film industry. Now that the Oscars are over, who made all the wrong calls, and who should be condemned for witchcraft?

In the dartboard above, each dart represents the percentage of correct Oscar calls a commentator made out of 11 categories: Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Original Screenplay, Best Animated Feature Film, Best Documentary Feature, and Best Cinematography. Red darts represent Slate writers, while blue darts represent writers from other publications. Hover over each dart to learn more.

The team implemented the 'phase estimation algorithm' a central quantum algorithm which achieves an exponential speedup over all classical algorithms. It lies at the heart of quantum computing and is a key sub-routine of many other important quantum algorithms, such as Shor's factoring algorithm and quantum simulations.

Dr Xiao-Qi Zhou, who led the project, said: "Before our experiment, there had been several demonstrations of quantum algorithms, however, none of them implemented the quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance. This is because in the previous demonstrations the quantum circuits were simplified to make it more experimentally feasible. However, this simplification of circuits required knowledge of the answer in advance. Unlike previous demonstrations, we built a full quantum circuit to implement the phase estimation algorithm without any simplification. We don't need to know the answer in advance and it is the first time the answer is truly calculated by a quantum circuit with a quantum algorithm."

Professor Jeremy O'Brien, director of the Centre for Quantum Photonics at the University of Bristol said: "Implementing a full quantum algorithm without knowing the answer in advance is an important step towards practical quantum computing. It paves the way for important applications, including quantum simulations and quantum metrology in the near term, and factoring in the long term."

The research is published in Nature Photonics.

Sony files patent for detecting illegal software by measuring load times

    February 23rd 2013

    Sony

In the on-going battle against illegal piracy, Sony has filed a patent for what is a first in the console industry ? measuring software against an acceptable benchmark to determine its validity.

The full patent can be seen here, but the basic process is similar to this -

Though the patent was originally filed in August of 2011, it was only recently published. Some of the information and wording used in the patent suggests that, though this technology hasn?t been confirmed for PS4, we will see it on Sony?s newest console:

    • What is claimed is:
      • 1. A method for validating legitimate media products associated with a legitimate media type, the method comprising: loading a first media product having a first media type on a computing device; measuring a first load time for the first media product on the computing device; establishing a threshold range of acceptable first load times using a second load time associated with the legitimate media type; and determining whether the first load time is within the threshold range.
      • 17. A system for validating legitimate media products associated with a legitimate media type, the system comprising: a computing device that loads a first media product having a first media type and that measures a first load time for the first media product; a processor that calculates a second load time for the legitimate media type, establishes a threshold range of acceptable first load times using the second load time, and determines whether the first load time is within the threshold range; and a memory coupled to the processor.

The company?s rationale behind the patent is clearly seen in the ?detail? area of the patent as well:

    • In recent years, computing devices have developed universal appeal as a primary source of information, entertainment and communication. End-user products integrating these devices, such as televisions, DVD players, game consoles, computers and the like, are created, changed and refined to facilitate consumer access to digital content of all sizes and types. Thus, consumers are often able to acquire large amounts of digital content, such as games, television shows, movies, applications, etc., with a single click of a button. Such digital content is often made available for a premium by device manufacturers and third party developers, who depend on consumer licenses of their content to recoup their research and development costs. These licenses allow the consumer to use and enjoy the content without infringing on the intellectual property rights of the manufacturers or developers.
    • Unfortunately, as technology rapidly progresses and content becomes more widely available and accessible, consumers have turned to piracy to illegally acquire certain digital content, and in some cases, entire libraries of content. Digital rights management (DRM) software and tamper-resistant hardware are employed by manufacturers to discourage illegal acquisitions. However, pirates are often able to reverse engineer such attempts and circumvent the protection entirely.

To combat this problem, Sony directly uses this patent as support for its claim:

    • Thus, there is a continuous and ongoing need for novel and improved digital rights management schemes that provide additional layers of protection against piracy. Embodiments of the invention meet this need and others by providing a system and method for measuring and employing benchmarks for legitimate duplication validation.
    • According to an embodiment of the invention, a method for validating legitimate media products associated with a legitimate media type is described. The method comprises loading a first media product having a first media type on a computing device, measuring a first load time for the first media product on the computing device, establishing a threshold range of acceptable first load times using a second load time for the legitimate media type associated with the legitimate media products, and determining whether the first load time is within the threshold range.
    • A system for effecting this method is also described herein according to an embodiment of the invention. For example, a system for validating legitimate media products associated with a legitimate media type is described. The system comprises a computing device that loads a first media product having a first media type and that measures a first load time for the first media product, a processor that calculates a second load time for the legitimate media type, establishes a threshold range of acceptable first load times using the second load time, and determines whether the first load time is within the threshold range, and a memory coupled to the processor.

In addition to the new patent, Sony expect that its developers and companies will henceforth view this patent as a positive component of working with the company -

    • It should be understood that processes and techniques described herein are not inherently related to any particular apparatus and may be implemented by any suitable combination of components. Further, various types of general purpose devices may be used in accordance with the teachings described herein. It may also prove advantageous to construct a specialized apparatus to perform the methods described herein. Those skilled in the art will appreciate that many different combinations of hardware, software, and firmware will be suitable for practicing the disclosed embodiments.

More information as we get it, but this patent promises to be revolutionary in the fight against online piracy.

    Thanks, NeoGaf.

Alexandria, VA Geoscience Currents #70 presents the final data collected from the GeoConnection Recruitment Packets distributed from 2009 to 2011. The packets, which included informational brochures from several of AGI's member societies, fliers with internship information, and a copy of EARTH Magazine's "Workforce" edition, also offered students the opportunity to register with up to five of AGI's professional member societies for free. This endeavor was meant to increase student participation in the greater geoscience community. Geoscience Currents #70 details student behavior and preferences in society enrollments from 2009 through 2011. Although all of the packets were distributed by 2011, AGI still receives student requests for membership to professional societies.

A copy of Geoscience Currents 70 can be found online at http://www.agiweb.org/workforce/currents.html.
