Osborne boxed in by austerity on budget day

By William Schomberg

LONDON (Reuters) - Chancellor George Osborne faces the daunting task on Wednesday of delivering another austerity budget to a country impatient with near-zero growth.

The chancellor of the exchequer, as he is formally known, will make more cuts to day-to-day public spending as he tries to free up some cash for investment. He is also likely to announce another round of weaker economic forecasts.

Despite a slump in opinion polls, Osborne and Conservative Prime Minister David Cameron are sticking to their push to fix Britain's budget deficit and rising public debt, hoping for a recovery before they fight for re-election in two years time.

Cameron's spokesman prepared the way for another round of belt-tightening, saying on Tuesday that the country still faced "an unprecedented peacetime economic crisis", more than four years after the near collapse of the banking system.

Committed to fiscal austerity, Osborne may seek to get the Bank of England to do more with monetary policy to mend the weak growth that has knocked the government off its fiscal targets.

When the government took office in 2010, the budget deficit was a hefty 11 percent of gross domestic product (GDP), hammered by a global economic slump and years of over-reliance on London's giant international banks to provide tax revenues.

Britain's independent budget watchdog at the time predicted the deficit would fall to 1.1 percent of GDP by 2015-16, in part due to the tough cost-cutting measures laid out by Osborne.

The deficit in the fiscal year ending this month, on a like-for-like basis, is likely to be 7.7 percent of GDP, the watchdog said in December, among the highest in the European Union.

Rather than grow by nearly 3 percent this year - as forecast in 2010 - Britain's economy may be back in a recession again, while rising inflation is hurting households.

GROWTH QUANDARY

The government puts much of the blame on the crisis in the euro zone, Britain's main export market. The opposition Labour Party shows no mercy in hammering Osborne for his austerity.

Some inside Cameron's coalition are now showing unease. The Liberal Democrat business minister has questioned whether markets would punish Britain if it borrowed to fund growth.

Business leaders largely agree that fixing Britain's fiscal health should remain a government priority, for now. But John Longworth, head of the British Chambers of Commerce, thinks the government might need to reverse course and borrow more if there is no prospect of growth within six months: "It would be a sort of defibrillator approach to the economy," he said.

Osborne will announce on Wednesday that some government departments will have to cut spending by a further 1 percent in each of the next two financial years, on top of previously announced cuts to ministerial budgets, to provide an extra 2.5 billion pounds for investment.

"If this is the only additional investment in infrastructure in the budget, it will be a huge disappointment," said Chris Leslie, a Labour finance spokesman.

Other budget measures will include tax breaks to help working parents pay for childcare from 2015. There might also be further cut to corporate tax rates and an increase in the tax-free allowance for individuals' incomes, local media have said.

With little sign of strong growth any time soon, Britain could suffer further downgrades of its credit rating. Moody's stripped Britain of its prized triple-A rating last month.

CENTRAL BANK

Many in financial markets will pay most attention to what Osborne says about the Bank of England's remit. He wants the central bank to do more to boost growth on top of the 375 billion pounds it has spent on buying government debt. It has also cut interest rates to a historic low of 0.5 percent.

Osborne may announce a review of the Bank's official remit of targeting inflation of 2 percent, or take the bolder step of making growth less of a secondary objective for the governor.

The pound has lost about 7 percent of its value against the dollar so far this year. Much of the fall is due to speculation that the Bank might be encouraged to pump more money into the economy, either before or after its new governor, Mark Carney, arrives from the Bank of Canada in July.

Former monetary policymakers say any changes to the British central bank's remit must be made carefully.

Charles Goodhart, who served at the Bank from 1997 to 2000, argues that its flexible approach to fighting inflation had worked well for the past two decades. "Changing a long-term regime for short-term purposes would be undesirable," he said.

Social and Cell Phone Monitoring Can Make Your Family's Life Better!

Social and Cell Phone Monitoring Can Make Your Family's Life Better!

Posted by Tim Woda on Wed, Mar 20, 2013 @ 11:10 AM In the current digital age, many families have tween and teenage children who spend significant periods of time on social media websites and mobile devices. While these outlets can be asset to children's social lives, theycell phone, laptop can also do more harm than good. Many parents are weary of enforcing heavy social media and cell phone monitoring because of the endless arguments that will result. However, doing nothing and letting tweens and teens have complete freedom is not the answer either. How do you find a balance? Consider creating an open environment for communication and compromise in which you and your children can discuss healthy limits and rules. The following tips will help you with this process.
  • When can a child join Facebook? The minimum age for creating a Facebook account is 13. However, there is no way for Facebook to enforce this policy as people can lie about their birthdays when they create accounts. As a parent, it can be tough to stand up against the growing pressure that "everyone" at school has a Facebook account, even in 4th or 5th grade. If your child is adamant about joining Facebook before age 13, have a discussion with him or her about why Facebook creates this minimum age and why you believe that it is important. Your child may still be upset about not getting an account, but in time he or she will appreciate your honesty.
  • What limits should be set on privacy settings? Facebook and Internet browsers are equipped with privacy settings. As a parent, it is important to review these settings and determine what limits are appropriate for your particular household. There is no magic combination that will work for every family. Instead of setting privacy limits without your children's knowledge, be honest with them about their options online. Many mobile devices are also equipped with cell phone monitoring capacity. If you are not familiar with these options, talk to your cell phone provider and fellow parents before you purchase a mobile device for your tween or teen.
  • Is a parental intelligence system appropriate? Some parents opt to purchase parental intelligence systems for Internet and cell phone monitoring. Some software allows for extremely close monitoring, such as viewing the exact keys that were typed, the time that was spent online, and a log of all computer activity. Again, as a parent, you must decide if this is an appropriate option for your family. Some children are very forthright with their online and mobile activity and may not require such measures.
  • How can you manage social media and cell phone monitoring with ease? One of the most successful measures for managing your monitoring is learning your child's routines. This includes the times that he uses his computer and mobile device, the sites and applications that he frequents, and any other components that are part of his regular technology routine, such as listening to music online. It is easier to spot a potential problem when you are familiar with normal activity.
  • Should you set ground rules? Absolutely. It is definitely a good idea to set ground rules for social and mobile use for any family. Tweens and teens will be more appreciative of rules if parents are upfront about the personal expectations for the entire family and stick to them as well. For example, a family may come to the consensus that no one is allowed to send text messages during family meals. Parents can start by setting the example and upholding this rule themselves.

Also, I have heard from multiple parents that using a parental intelligence system to keep their children safe online actually makes relationships in the household much better. For example, we heard a story about a user that noticed that her daughter and her boyfriend hadn't texted each other in a few days. ?Instead of letting her teenage daughter continue to be depressed about the situation, the parent confronted her that she knew the daughter and her boyfriend were having a fight, and they were able to talk through the problem and resolve it.

Carnival Legend returns in Florida

The latest in a series of beleaguered Carnival cruises made its way back to port early Sunday, capping a harrowing week for passengers aboard several troubled ships.

The Carnival Legend arrived in Tampa, Florida, hours ahead of schedule Sunday morning after propulsion system problems hampered its sailing speed.

The company had to nix a scheduled stop on Grand Cayman because of the technical difficulty.

But Carnival Cruise Lines said the Legend is still scheduled to head out for its next voyage on time Sunday afternoon while technicians continue working on the repairs.

"The ship is expected to operate its normal itinerary with the exception of one port -- Grand Cayman -- which is being replaced by Costa Maya," Carnival said in a statement. "Any guests wishing not to proceed based on the change to one port of call have been given the option of canceling and receiving a full refund."

The company stressed that all safety systems, steering and hotel services were functioning normally.

But dismayed vacationers from the Legend's last voyage vented their frustration.

"Passengers are now really pissed off," passenger Rob Bonenfant said via e-mail before the ship's arrival. "Mood on the ship is getting worse among passengers, captain is giving limited information."

Carnival Dream: Stuck in the Caribbean

The Legend's malfunction is the latest in a growing list of woes for the travel company. In the past month, three other Carnival cruise ships have reported problems.

EU's Ashton urges caution on lifting arms ban for Syria rebels

By Adrian Croft

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The European Union's foreign policy chief urged caution on Saturday about a Franco-British drive to lift an EU arms embargo to help rebels in Syria, questioning the impact such a step might have on attempts to reach a political settlement there.

Other EU governments rebuffed efforts by Paris and London at an EU summit on Friday to lift the Syrian arms embargo to help opponents of President Bashar al-Assad, although they asked foreign ministers to discuss it again next week.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said the EU needed to think "very carefully" about French and British arguments that lifting the embargo would encourage Assad to negotiate.

The EU should also consult U.N. mediator Lakhdar Brahimi and Moaz al-Khatib, head of the opposition Syrian National Coalition, about impact lifting the embargo might have on their efforts to start talks to end the Syria crisis, she said.

"What we've got to make sure of is anything we do does not make that (work) harder," she said, speaking at a conference organized by the German Marshall Fund of the United States, a group committed to strengthening transatlantic cooperation.

Germany led opposition to the Franco-British move to lift the embargo to help the rebels after two years of civil war that have killed 70,000 people, according to U.N. estimates.

Opponents argue that arming the rebels could encourage Assad's backers, Russia and Iran, to step up weapons deliveries to the government, fuelling an arms race, and they also fear that weapons could fall into the wrong hands, such as Islamist militants in the rebel ranks.

Ashton said she had told EU leaders at Friday's summit that they must think through very carefully the implications of lifting the arms embargo.

"Would putting weapons into the field make it more or less likely that others will do the same? What would be the response of Assad based on what we know about his response so far? Would it stop people being killed or would it kill people faster?" she said.

Although Ashton did not mention it, Western governments are concerned about chemical weapons the Syrian government is believed to hold. U.S. President Barack Obama has warned Assad he would be held accountable if such weapons were used.

EU diplomats think it is unlikely France and Britain will be able to persuade its EU partners to back lifting the arms embargo to help the rebels, a decision that needs unanimity. But a compromise allowing some increased aid to Assad's opponents might be possible before current sanctions expire on June 1.

Ashton, a Briton, said there was "no possibility" of her staying on for a second term as EU foreign policy chief after her five-year term expires at the end of next year.

"It needs to go to someone else now," she said.

Apple adds new webpage, sends out emails telling us why people love iPhones... more than other phones

Apple adds new webpage, sends out emails telling us why people love iPhones... more than other phones

Apple has updated Apple.com with a new page, and sent out an email campaign, aimed at telling us just why people love iPhones... and why competing phones just aren't as good. The timing, so soon after Samsung announced the Galaxy S4 is certainly interesting, and feels like it marks a shift in Apple's strategy towards the more aggressive, more competitive product marketing. Apple did a lot of this in the "Get a Mac" days with their "I'm a Mac" and "I'm a PC" character commercials, but it hasn't been a major focus of their mobile campaigns until now.

Mixed into the new webpage and mailer, are lines like:

Every detail and every material ? particularly the sleek aluminum enclosure ? has been meticulously considered and refined.

The Galaxy series is, famously, plastic/polycarb and not generally considered to be as high quality plastic/polycarb as HTC or Nokia uses.

Yet [the Retina display] remains a feature found only on iPhone and other Apple products.

Other companies have fielded larger, denser screens. Apple might be referring to technology like the in-cell display and the individual color calibrations to make an overall case for their displays.

But it?s extraordinary that we fit such a powerful battery into such a thin and light design ? all thanks to Apple scientists who created unique battery chemistry instead of settling for a large, off-the-shelf option.

iPhone has an impressive battery life for it's size. I'd still argue that a slightly thicker iPhone could enjoy even more impressive battery life and few people would quibble at the difference in volume.

And the A6 chip works hand in hand with iOS 6 to be extremely power efficient. So you don?t sacrifice battery life for speed.

Apple, like BlackBerry, makes every bit and every atom, so they can fine tune the performance. Samsung uses a third-party operating system (Google's Android) but has put a dual quad core beast into the Galaxy S3. Does that really matter? Given how Android still isn't optimized for interface, if interface is important to you, then sure it does.

And while other smartphones simply tout large amounts of megapixels, taking great pictures is about so much more.

Some smartphones tout large megapixel counts. The HTC One has "only" a 4-megapixel camera but the sensor is 2 micros, which is huge for light gathering, and it has OIS (optical image stabilization) so it can keep the aperture open longer on stationary objects and collect more light . Nokia's Lumia 920 does similar. Oversampling is where they're going.

The iPhone 5 has an amazing camera, arguably still the best camera in mobile, and at a size so thin it's literally a miracle of engineering, but others have also broken the megapixel bad habit.

With iPhone, all that [media and app] content comes from one source: Apple. [...](Other mobile platforms have a myriad of fragmented store options, resulting in availability issues, developer frustration, and security risks.)

This is the malware knock on Android, which is mostly a problem for those who steal apps from untrustworthy sources. Amazon does have their own Android app store, however, and there are issues for developers given the enormous diversity of the Android device catalog. Every benefit has an associated drawback.

Every iPhone comes with support from real people who know everything there is to know about iPhone and iOS ? people you can call at 1-800-MY-APPLE or speak to in person at your favorite Apple Retail Store whenever you have questions or concerns. With other smartphones, you?re not sure where to go for help. Call the manufacturer, and they tell you to call your service provider. Call your service provider, and they tell you to contact the OS developer. Getting answers shouldn?t be that hard. And with Apple, it never is.

This is the nuke in Apple's current arsenal. You can walk into an Apple store with a busted phone, and thanks to AppleCare+ and iCloud, you can walk out again a few minutes later with a brand new phone that's also exactly your phone. No one else is doing this because no one else has the retail footprint Apple has.

The stuff up top is interesting, but for any mainstream customer who lives anywhere near an Apple Store, this is the real reason why you should love the iPhone most right now.

Apple's never been the marketshare leader in smartphones. Nokia and RIM had a huge lead when the iPhone launched, and Android has the lead now. Apple is and remains the profit-share leader, but for the first time they're engaged in a real battle for mainstream mind share. The Galaxy S4 might be the first phone to get as much attention as the iPhone.

Some might find this new campaign defense or reactionary. Maybe. Either way, it's a shift, and that's exciting. A scrappy Apple is going to be fun to watch.

If you got Apple's new iPhone love letter, let me know your reaction. And head on over to Apple's new "Why iPhone" page, read it through, and let me know what you think.

Sarah Palin urges GOP to broaden message

OXON HILL, Md. (AP) ? Returning to the national stage, Former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin said Saturday that the Republican Party must broaden its message to grow.

"We must leave no American behind," she said in a populist speech that electrified supporters at a conservative summit in suburban Washington. "And we must share our powerful message of freedom and liberty to all citizens ? even those who may disagree on some issues."

Palin has maintained a low-profile during last year's election. She's expected to play a limited role in the future of the GOP but shared several recommendations Saturday.

Instead of focusing on rebuilding the Republican Party, she said that party leaders should focus on rebuilding the middle class.

She jabbed President Barack Obama and the Republican professional class alike, urging the crowd to reject the ideas of political consultants and pollsters, taking a not-so-subtle dig at Karl Rove, a former adviser to President George W. Bush and a co-founder of outside group Crossroads USA.

"The architects can head on back ... to the great Lone Star State, and put their name on some ballot, though, for their sake, I hope they give themselves a discount on their consulting services," she quipped.

But Palin saved her most pointed criticism for the president, likening him to Ponzi-scheme felon Bernie Madoff. Taking a shot at the president's call for universal background checks on gun owners, she said, "Dandy idea, Mr. President ? should have started with yours."

Palin drew cheers when she paused in the middle of her remarks to sip soda from a "Big Gulp" ? the type of supersized, sugary drink that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg tried to ban. A New York judge this week struck down the Republican mayor's pioneering 16-ounce limit on insodas and other nondiet sweet drinks for sale.

"Oh, Bloomberg's not around," she mocked. "Our Big Gulp is safe. "

Decorating Homes or Offices Through Interior Design Companies in Dubai

Author (Abdulla Moidu). Submitted on Thu, 14 Mar 2013

Every individual wants his or her residential space to be designed in an attractive fashion. A good design with an aesthetic appeal is pleasing to the eyes and it has great utility for the occupants. Using the services of reputed interior design companies in Dubai can greatly help in designing layouts of one's choice. Design consultants can also be used for help, whether for residential or commercial purposes.

There are different elements with respect to interior design. One can start by looking at curtains Dubai. It is important to choose drapes that match or contrast shades of room accessories. Most people look at giving their rooms an airy feel with curtains. Stitching on curtains must have been done in a precise manner. Along with customized designs, it is also possible to purchase drapes with a choice of tracks, rails and curtain rods. A huge variety of drapes with fabrics from across the globe are available with reputed vendors, many of whom can be tracked through the Internet.

Interior design companies in Dubai must be aware of the latest trends in the market. This is one sphere where continuous improvements take place from time to time. Home residents generally look for renovations either to increase space in the house or to change appearances. Most of this involves doing work which is more than just painting. It also involves putting new upholstery, blinds, wall covering and furniture. Some people prefer to gets walls painted while others prefer to use wallpaper.

Several persons prefer to use flooring made of natural material. Different types of materials available for this purpose include grasses, bamboo and jute. Tiles can also be used, which are quite easy to clean and give floors a neat look. Whatever be the type of flooring chosen from reputed companies always make sure that customers are fully satisfied with the final result of renovation.

Buying products from Curtains Dubai companies such as furnishings, wallpapers and others helps buyers save time and money, instead of looking for different vendors. Such companies also do fine jobs such as stitching curtains, repairing fabrics of sofas and mending of tables or chairs. Experienced tailors ensure that each stitching of upholstery is treated with great precision.

Color schemes used in an office are very different from those used in homes. Very few sober colors are required to be used in commercial spaces as opposed to residences. The types of colors used by interior design companies in Dubai help in giving rooms a sense of space. Modularity, or small and compact designs are common features of several modern designs. Chairs are given ergonomic shapes so that employees do not get body aches while sitting for long hours. Varying needs of businesses means that furniture must be lightweight so that it can be moved easily to meet seating requirements.

Most offices of today make use of blinds instead of curtains Dubai. Blinds can be of different materials, namely wooden, Roman, venetian, awnings, bamboo and vertical. They can be adjusted by rotating flaps from open to closed positions, depending upon the amount of desired light.

    Caimin In, the Water's Fine

    60-Second Science

Fossil caiman skulls found in Panama raise questions about the distance between South and Central America at the beginning of the Miocene epoch. Sophie Bushwick reports

    More 60-Second Science

It was thought that saltwater seas separated Central and South America millions of years ago. But a recent discovery may render that idea all wet. Because archaeologists in Panama have dug up the remains of ancient alligator relatives?which were freshwater creatures. The work is in the Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology. [Alexander K. Hastings et al., Systematics and biogeography of crocodylians from the Miocene of Panama]

Excavations at the Panama Canal have turned up many fossils. Recently, two partial skulls were found embedded in rocks that date back more than 19 million years, which makes them the oldest crocodilian fossils ever found in Central America. The skulls are from two species of the freshwater reptiles called caimans. Modern caimans are related to North American alligators but live only in South America.

To reach Panama, the caimans must have left South America around the beginning of the Miocene epoch, when ocean separated the two continents. These freshwater animals should only have been able to cross a short expanse of saltwater. So at the time, Central and South America may have been much closer than we thought. Either that, or those caimans hitched a ride.

Protesters, policemen injured in Bahrain clashes

    By Sami Aboudi

DUBAI (Reuters) - At least 10 civilians and several policemen were injured in Bahrain on Thursday, an opposition group and the government said, during protests to mark the second anniversary of the arrival of Saudi forces which helped crush a pro-democracy uprising.

Home to the U.S. Fifth Fleet, the tiny state has been hit by unrest since the revolt in early 2011, becoming a front line in a region-wide tussle for influence between Shi'ite Muslim Iran and Sunni Arab states such as Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates sent in 1,500 troops on March 14, 2011 to help suppress the uprising.

The mass disturbances were crushed but demonstrators, mainly from Bahrain's Shi'ite majority, have continued small protests on an almost daily basis demanding equality and a constitutional monarchy in the kingdom ruled by the Sunni al-Khalifa family.

The latest violence followed the death of two young men during clashes with police last month as Bahrainis marked the second anniversary of the February 14 start of the uprising. It is likely to cast a shadow over reconciliation talks between the government and the opposition aimed at ending political turmoil.

The Islamist Wefaq association - the country's biggest opposition group - said that, by midday on Thursday, at least 10 people had been injured by security forces who they said used live bullets, birdshot and teargas against "peaceful demonstrators".

Three of those injured were in critical condition, the group said in a report on its website. It posted pictures of injuries, including a limb hit by what appeared to be a live round.

The Information Affairs Authority said several policemen were injured when demonstrators attacked them with petrol bombs and iron rods, and detonated homemade bombs "endangering the lives of innocent bystanders and security personnel".

"Police used restraint to restore order and all force used was necessary and proportionate," the assistant chief of security for operations said in the statement.

The statement said the demonstrators had stolen cars, torched vehicles and blocked the streets with large rocks and lampposts and scattered nails and oil on roads. It attached pictures of barricaded roads and torched vehicles.

It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the reports or pictures given by either side.

An international inquiry commission, invited by Bahrain's government, said in a report in November 2011 that 35 people had died during the uprising. The dead were mainly protesters but included five security personnel and seven foreigners. The report said five people had died from torture.

The opposition puts the death toll at more than 80.

Bahrain's opposition and government resumed reconciliation talks last month for the first time since July 2011, but little progress has been reported in several sessions of negotiations.

FORT WAYNE, Ind. ? Rivalries were renewed on WWE Main Event as World Heavyweight Champion Alberto Del Rio battled Big Show in the featured contest on ION Television. Also, The Usos battled 3MB and Intercontinental Champion Wade Barrett squared off with fellow WWE NXT alum Justin Gabriel.

Big Show def. Alberto Del Rio via count-out (PHOTOS | WATCH)

On the Jan. 8, 2013, episode of SmackDown, Alberto Del Rio defeated Big Show in a brutal Last Man Standing Match to fulfill his destiny and win the World Heavyweight Championship. Del Rio defeated The World?s Largest Athlete in a second Last Man Standing contest at Royal Rumble and in a singles match at Extreme Rules. Since then, the Mexican hero has focused his attention on his WrestleMania 29 opponent, Jack Swagger, but as evidenced on ION Television, the animosity between Big Show and the World Heavyweight Champion still boils.

Although the title was not on the line, Big Show was certainly seeking revenge on a personal level against the World Champion. The World?s Largest Athlete?s rage was further stoked by an attack by The Shield during his battle with Seth Rollins on Raw. Big Show and Del Rio immediately exchanged offensive maneuvers ? highlighting the in-ring familiarity both Superstars have developed with one another.

Just as momentum swung in the World Heavyweight Champion?s favor, his WrestleMania 29 challenger, Jack Swagger ? with his founding father Zeb Colter in tow ? made his way onto the entrance ramp. The ?Real American? and Colter maintained a watchful eye on Del Rio as Big Show used the distraction to regain control of the contest. The World?s Largest Athlete focused his offense on Del Rio?s arm and shoulder ? a tactic normally used by the World Heavyweight Champion in an effort to set up his patented Cross Armbreaker.

The WWE Universe in Fort Wayne, however, was firmly in support of Del Rio. Feeding off the energy in the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum, Del Rio battled back, executing an impressive hurricanrana on the giant, followed by a seated senton to regain full control of the bout. As the World Heavyweight Champion prepared for his Cross Armbreaker, Big Show managed to overpower him and dump him over the top rope and to the outside.

As the WWE official began his 10-count, he was distracted by Big Show, allowing Jack Swagger to attack Del Rio?s leg. Unable to regain his footing and the official unaware of the ?Real American?s? actions, the World Heavyweight Champion failed to answer the 10-count, ultimately securing the victory for Big Show.

(AP) ? Scientists from Illinois have found a rare, 600-year-old Chinese coin on the Kenyan island of Manda.

The Field Museum in Chicago announced the find Wednesday. The joint expedition was led by Chapurukha Kusimba of the museum and Sloan Williams of the University of Illinois-Chicago. Researchers say the coin proves trade existed between China and eastern Africa decades before European explorers set sail.

The coin is made of copper and silver. It has a square hole in the center so it could be worn on a belt. Scientists say it was issued by Emperor Yongle of China and his name is written on the coin.

Scientists from Kenya, Pennsylvania and Ohio also participated in the expedition. They also found human remains and other artifacts predating the coin.

Gay And Lesbian Hook-Up Websites On The Increase In Ghana

Gay and Lesbian hook-ups is flourishing in Ghana and gradually gaining grounds. The practice has taken over sites meant for straight hook-up connections due to the increased advent of internet social networks such as Facebook and Twitter among others.

Interestingly, there are lots of Gay and Lesbian hook-ups and dating pages specifically opened by Ghanaians for Ghanaian Gays and Lesbians to find their match and probably hookup to others of the same interests and social preference.

On our expeditions on Facebook and Twitter social net works, as we randomly search, we came across lively and well patronized pages for Gays and Lesbians. Memberships on the various pages run from 200 to 3000 depending on which pages appear more interactive. The following are some Ghanaian friendly Gay and lesbian pages on social networks Facebook and Twitter; Gay hookups, Gay Ghana Lounge, Gay Ghana Hood, Azonto Family, Gay and Lesbian dating in Ghana, Gay Ghana and Gay teens Ghana, among others, all pages opened and were dedicated to homosexual relationships on Facebook and Twitter in Ghana for Gays.

We also found out that special internet websites have been fully or partially designated for Gay and Lesbians relationship and activities in Ghana; such as Ghana Peep, Fbubs, Mingle2, LGBT Ghana etc.

Aside all these we found out that there are quite a number of places that Gays hangout in the country. In Accra we came across places such as, Rhapsody, Le Reve, Coconut Grove Hotel Salsa night, Chester?s Bar, Epo?s Spot, Bus Stop Pool Bar, Bywel Bar, The Office, Lizzie?s container whiles the La Beach, Topido Guest House, attracts a lot of Gays all in Accra published on a secret online gay Ghana community.

Our investigations also reveal that there are a number of well meaning people in the Ghanaian society that are in showbiz, politics, media etc that are gays or bisexuals but are hiding and being very discreet about their status.

Activities of Gays and lesbians are also flourishing on many university campuses such as University of Ghana, Cape Coast, KNUST, UDS, UPS, CUC, Valley View, Methodist University, Pentecost, and Presbyterian University etc.
    ?
The Senior High Schools in the country are also hot spots for some beginners and are places where most children adopt the nature of gay and lesbian relationships.

Gay and Lesbian relationships are frowned upon by Ghana?s customs. The Government was slammed by sections of the Ghanaian society for appointing human right activist, Nana Oye Lithur for the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection. Many were of the view that Nana Oye Lithur was going to spear-head the legalization of homosexuality and protection of Lesbian relationships in Ghana.

Though Both the Gender Minister and the government have affirmed their positions on homosexuality and Lesbianism, in that the government says it will never legalise homosexuality, the Gender Minister has also explained that it is her duty only protect the rights of homosexuals and Lesbians in Ghana.

If the government is really willing and sure not to legalise and prevent further proliferation of homosexuality in Ghana, then we may as well have lost it if the nation?s public places have now become hide outs for people seeking to exercise their SICK rights and influence other people in homosexuality.

Swedish princess lived a life of forbidden love

Swedish Princess Lilian and Prince Bertil kept their love secret for decades. The Swedish princesss and prince and were both in their 60s when they finally received the king's blessing to get married.

In a touching royal romance, Welsh-born Princess Lilian and her Bertil kept their love unofficial for decades and were both in their 60s when they finally received the king's blessing to get married.

Lilian died in her Stockholm home on Sunday at age 97. The Royal Palace didn't give a cause of death.

She met Sweden's Prince Bertil in 1943, but his obligations to the throne and Lilian's status as a divorced commoner prevented them from making their love public. The couple's sacrifices and lifelong dedication to one another gripped the hearts of Swedes.

"If I were to sum up my life, everything has been about my love," the witty, petite princess said of her husband when she turned 80 in 1995. "He's a great man, and I love him."

Born Lilian Davies in Swansea, Wales, on Aug. 30, 1915, she moved to London at 16 to embark on a career as a model and an actress, showcasing hats and gloves in commercials and taking on small roles in movies. She met British actor Ivan Craig, whom she married in 1940.

After World War II broke out, Craig was drafted into the British army while Lilian stayed behind in London, working at a factory making radio sets for the British merchant fleet and serving at a hospital for wounded soldiers.

At the time, Prince Bertil was stationed at the Swedish Embassy in the British capital as a naval attache. The couple first laid eyes on each other in the fancy nightclub Les Ambassadeurs shortly before Lilian's 28th birthday in 1943. Lilian then invited him to a cocktail party in her London apartment. But it wasn't until he fetched her with his car following an air raid in her neighborhood that the romance blossomed, Lilian recalled in her 2000 memoirs, "My Life with Prince Bertil."

"He was so handsome my prince. Especially in uniform. So charming and thoughtful. And so funny. Oh how we laughed together," Lilian wrote.

Lilian was still married at the time, but the situation resolved itself since Craig, too, had met someone else during his years abroad in the army, and the couple divorced on amicable terms.

Upon Bertil's return to Sweden, however, his relationship with a commoner became a delicate issue.

Bertil became a possible heir to the throne when his eldest brother died in a plane crash, leaving behind an infant son ? the current King Carl XVI Gustaf. Two other brothers had dropped out of the line of succession by marrying commoners.

Bertil's father, King Gustaf VI Adolf, ordered him to abstain from marrying Lilian, since that would jeopardize the survival of the Bernadotte dynasty.

Instead, the couple let their romance flourish in an unofficial manner, living together in a common-law marriage for decades.

They first lived in their house in Sainte-Maxime in France, but later shared their time between the French village and Stockholm, where Lilian discreetly stayed in the background for years.

Despite the royal reluctance to recognize her officially, Lilian's charm and warm personality soon won the Swedes over, and magazines depicted the happy couple playing golf and riding around on the prince's motorbike. When Prince Bertil had to use a walking frame after an operation, she cheerfully nicknamed it his "Bugatti."

In 1976, some 33 years after they first met, the new king finally gave them the approval they had been waiting for.

On a cold December day the same year, Lilian, or "Lily" as the prince used to call her, became princess of Sweden and duchess of the southern province of Halland in a ceremony at the Drottningholm Palace Chapel just outside Stockholm. The bride had by then turned 61 and the groom was 64.

The couple never had any children.

Prince Bertil died in the couple's residence Villa Solbacken in Stockholm in 1997 after unspecified lung problems.

Lilian took over some of her husband's duties, especially as an award presenter for various sports associations.

Health problems forced her to cut back on some of her royal duties. In 2006 she stopped attending the annual Nobel Prize banquet, and the next year she also stopped taking part in the award ceremony.

In 2010, the palace said Lilian suffered from Alzheimer's disease, preventing her from attending the wedding that summer of Crown Princess Victoria and Daniel Westling.

Milky Way's neighbor galaxy closer than thought

Astronomers in Chile announced that they are able to measure more accurately the distance to Large Magellanic Cloud, a galaxy?adjacent to the Milky Way.

    By Clara Moskowitz,?SPACE.com / March 6, 2013

Nearly 200 000 light-years from Earth, the Large Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, floats in space, in a long and slow dance around our galaxy. As the Milky Way?s gravity gently tugs on its neighbour?s gas clouds, they collapse to form new stars. In turn, these light up the gas clouds in a kaleidoscope of colours, visible in this image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope.

The distance to one of the Milky Way's next-door neighbors, a satellite galaxy that orbits its outskirts, has been determined more accurately than ever before, astronomers announced today.

The achievement could help scientists calibrate other cosmic distances, which are essential for understanding how quickly the universe is expanding and solving the mystery of?dark energy. Dark energy is the name given to whatever is tugging the universe apart and causing its expansion to accelerate.

According to the new measurement, the nearby dwarf galaxy called the?Large Magellanic Cloud?lies 163,000 light-years away.

"I am very excited because astronomers have been trying for a hundred years to accurately measure the distance to the Large Magellanic Cloud, and it has proved to be extremely difficult," Wolfgang Gieren, an astronomer at Chile's Universidad de Concepci?n, Chile, said in a statement. "Now we have solved this problem by demonstrably having a result accurate to 2 percent."

The finding was nearly a decade in the making, and required repeated precise measurements of rare pairs of binary stars that are oriented so that they eclipse each other as they orbit, from the perspective of Earth. [How Scientists Measured the Large Magellanic Cloud Distance (Video)]

Using telescopes at the European Southern Observatory's La Silla Observatory and the Las Campanas Observatory, both in Chile, Gieren and his colleagues identified eight pairs of eclipsing binaries in the Large Magellanic Cloud.

By tracking the changes in the star pairs' brightness when one star passed in front of the other, and vice versa, as well as measuring the stars' orbital speeds, the scientists could deduce the stars' sizes and masses, as well as details regarding their orbits. With this information, combined with measurements of the stars' total brightness and colors, their precise distances could be determined.

These measurements improve on previous estimates of the Large Magellanic Cloud's distance, which were all based on methods that had inherent uncertainties.

"Because the LMC is close and contains a significant number of different stellar distance indicators, hundreds of distance measurements using it have been recorded over the years," said team member Ian Thompson of the Carnegie Institution for Science in Washington, D.C. "Unfortunately, nearly all the determinations have systemic errors, with each method carrying its own uncertainties."

Pinning down the distance of the LMC, in turn, allows scientists to refine their estimates of other, farther cosmic distances. That's because the measurements of close distances are used to calibrate measurements of far-off objects. The new findings should help astronomers narrow down the?Hubble Constant, which denotes the rate of the universe's expansion, and is integral for the study of dark energy.

"We are working to improve our method still further and hope to have a 1 percent LMC distance in a very few years from now," said researcher Dariusz Graczyk . "This has far-reaching consequences not only for cosmology, but for many fields of astrophysics."

The findings are detailed in the March 8 issue of the journal Nature.

Funny though, the whole idea is to squish all your files as close together as you can so the head has less distance to travel.. in doing so you will read/write more to certain parts of the hard disk causing wear.

But in reality the moving parts will fail way before the disk reaches its read/write limits..

Of course you never want to defrag a solid state drive.. Waste of time and life capacity for it.

Nup. No need to. I don't run Windows.

Unix has been storing files without significant fragmentation for decades.

Defragmentation is a Windows problem: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Defragmentation#Approach_and_defragmenters_by_file-system_type

Compare "NTFS" (Windows) and "Linux ext2, ext3, and ext4" (the most common Linux file systems).

Linux avoids fragmenting files, and rarely needs disk defragmentation - I have never bothered. Windows needs regular defragmentation.

I remember I used to do that with the old win 98 defragger Laughing. It actually showed every single cluster, so it was a really long list.
Then the new ones in XP and Vista were just a colored strip.
    Then I found defraggler.

I don't defrag very often, really, the computer apparently does it automatically already. Last time I had to defrag it was to shrink a partition to make a new one and put linux on it, there was some mft stuff in the way and it was hell to find the proper tools.

Got to admire Fnord's discipline, I only run CCleaner monthly, Spybot like every half a year, and Avast only when I suspect I've catched something.

    http://ssd-life.com/eng/ssdlife-faq-frequently-asked-questions.html

I think I read newer ones didn't have that problem, or at least it wasn't as pronounced, but I haven't really looked into it yet

As far as I know, it's the action of the electrons pooling in the substrate in their cells... and they wear down the insulator between pockets eventually. Probably friction.. just very tiny.

Same thing can happen to flash drives..

Although it's proper coding now to make sure the software "Write levels" or moves around.. not staying in the same code block for long. That's even important on arduino stuff if you use the built in flash memory.

What do I know. It's all amazing is what I gather! Very Happy
