Chief Deputy Santa Monica City Attorney Terry White is prosecuting Lindsay for allegedly lying to cops last June after her car crash on Pacific Coast Highway. Lindsay -- who's been charged with 3 crimes in connection with the accident -- could face 19 months in jail if convicted on all counts. But sources connected with the case tell us ... White would be satisfied with COMMUNITY SERVICE because the crimes aren't that big a deal.

But here's the rub. The L.A. City Attorney wants to throw the book at Lindsay for allegedly violating her probation in the jewelry heist case. She could get 245 days in the slammer for the probation violation. Sources connected with the case tell TMZ ... L.A. prosecutors will ask Commissioner Jane Godfrey to sentence Lindsay to AT LEAST 200 days behind bars.

Although, as we first reported, the Commish believes in rehabilitation whenever possible, she is not against sentencing criminals to time behind bars. So the stage is now set for a showdown.

Samsung patent uses tiny, bright pixels to create seamless folding displays

Creating a seamless display in a foldable device can go a long way towards selling customers on the notion that two screens are better than one: otherwise, you end up with a disjointed effect. Samsung has been trying to solve that problem for years, but a newly-granted US patent could represent one of its more direct answers. The technique would put smaller yet bright pixels right at the joints between two displays, letting Samsung push the screen borders closer together while ramping up the brightness to have those edge pixels blend in with the rest. As Samsung would rely on self-lit display technologies like OLED, it could tune the brightness of those tiny pixels relatively easily, without having to lean on complex backlighting. Given that the patent was originally filed in South Korea back in 2006, there's no indication that Samsung is in a rush to start producing foldable phones and tablets. Having a US patent under its belt right as larger mobile OLED screens become viable, however, could come in handy.

A password expert has shown that passwords can be cracked by brute force four times faster than was previously thought possible.

It's no magician's trick.?Jeremi Gosney of the?Stricture Consulting Group shared the findings at the recent Passwords^12 conference in Norway, where researchers do nothing but focus on passwords and PIN numbers.

What Gosney?showed?is that a?computer cluster using 25 AMD Radeon graphics cards let it make 350 billion????that's right, billion???password attempts per second when trying to crack password hashes made by the algorithm Microsoft uses in Windows.

Ars Technica reported on the finding, estimating that it would take less than six hours for the system to guess every single possible eight-character password. Gosney,?in an email to the site, said, "We can attack (password) hashes?approximately four times faster than we could previously."

Users should take action, especially those who have been using eight-character passwords and thinking they were safe (or safer than users with fewer characters in passwords), said Infosecurity, an online magazine. It doesn't even matter if you have?numbers, upper case letters and symbols ? you are not in the clear.

Eight-character passwords "are no longer sufficient," the magazine says, and users should come up with longer passwords to "help defeat brute forcing, and complex passwords to help defeat dictionary attacks."?

Dictionary attacks use pretty common words, names and places?that many of us still come up with for passwords,?like "LoveNewYork" or even "Jesus" because they're easy to remember. They're also?incredibly easy to crack.

Dmitry Bestuzhev, of Kaspersky Lab, offers these suggestions:

1.?Use a different password for each different online resource. Never reuse the same password for different services. If you do, all or many of your other online accounts can be compromised.

2. ?Use complex passwords. This means, in a perfect scenario, a combination of symbols, letters and special characters. The longer the better.

3. ?Sometimes our online service providers don?t let us create really complex passwords, but try to use long passwords, with at least 23 characters in a combination of uppercase and lowercase letters. A password of 23 characters (131 bits) would be ok.?

That may be an ambitious undertaking, especially with the abundance of services out there that all require authentication, but it's worth striving for.

Eight characters "just isn't long enough for a password these days,"?Sophos Labs' Paul Ducklin told NBC News in an email.?"Even before this latest 'improvement' in cracking, standalone GPU?(graphics processing unit)-based servers could do the job on eight-character Windows passwords in under 24 hours." And, he added, "cybercrooks with a zombie network, of course, could easily do something similar, even without GPUs."

Ducklin, writing about another?password-cracking?presentation at?the password conference, made it clear that the findings are "yet another reminder that security is an arms race."?But to stay ahead all you have to do?is lengthen those passwords. At least for now.

Project aims to increase photosynthetic efficiency for sustainable yield increase

Champaign, Ill., December 10, 2012 The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has received a fiveyear, $25-million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve the photosynthetic properties of key food crops, including rice and cassava. The project, titled "RIPE Realizing Increased Photosynthetic Efficiency," has the potential to benefit farmers around the world by increasing productivity of staple food crops. Illinois research will take place at the Institute for Genomic Biology (IGB), a state-of-the-art facility whose large shared laboratories accommodate multiple groups and encourage cross-discipline interaction.

"This grant will be game changing," says Stephen Long, Project Director and Gutgsell Endowed Professor of Crop Sciences and Plant Biology at Illinois. "This project represents a huge effort to determine and apply the mechanisms of photosynthesis that can contribute to the challenge of this century: food security for all."

Increasing photosynthetic efficiency has not yet been addressed by conventional breeding methods, though it has the potential to increase yields and reduce the use of water and nitrogen. Team members will apply recent advances in photosynthesis research and crop bioengineering to the RIPE project. In addition, computer simulation models of the highly complex photosynthetic system, combined with practical engineering, will identify the best targets for improving photosynthesis efficiency.

"The UN Food and Agricultural Organization predicts that the world will need to increase staple crop yields 70% by 2050," says Long. "The rapid increases that were achieved during the Green Revolution have slowed and will not meet this target. Photosynthesis promises a new area, ripe for exploitation, that will provide part of the yield jump the world needs to maintain food security."

The University of Illinois, a pioneer in the impact of global change factors on crop plants, will lead the study. The University is home to SoyFACE (Soybean Free Air Concentration Enrichment), an outdoor facility for growing crops under a variety of atmospheric climatic conditions that has shown strong evidence linking increased photosynthesis to consistently higher crop yields over the 10 years of its operation. Illinois is also home to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act PETROSS program, which is engineering improved photosynthesis into two key US bioenergy crops, sugarcane and sorghum.

Don Ort, Associate Director of the project and Robert Emerson Professor of Plant Biology at Illinois and USDAAgricultural Research Service Research Leader, states "Business as usual crop development in the face of accelerating agricultural demand and the challenges of rapid global change will not get the job done. This award invests in unique strengths at Illinois as well as at our collaborating institutions and holds exceptional promise for broad impact outcomes." Ort leads the IGB research theme Genomic Ecology of Global Change.

"This grant reflects the historic excellence of photosynthesis research on this campus, and the cutting-edge approaches that have been developed for plant science at the IGB over the past few years by the members of the Genomic Ecology of Global Change and Energy Biosciences research themes," says IGB Director Gene Robinson.

Illinois will conduct the study through an international collaboration with other leading research institutions as sub-contractors of Illinois, which will initially include the Australian National University, Rothamsted Research (UK), University of Essex (UK), and USDA/ARS.

LONDON (AP) ? The news that Prince William and the former Kate Middleton were expecting their first child ? joyous news for a couple looking forward to starting a family ? immediately turned bittersweet with the simultaneous announcement that the duchess was being hospitalized for acute morning sickness. Then there was an invasion of her privacy by two disc jockeys who impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles to gain information on her condition.

By Friday, the sadness merely deepened, with the news that the nurse who unwittingly took the hoax call had died.

The royal couple quickly issued a statement expressing their condolences over the death of Jacintha Saldanha, the 46-year-old mother of two duped by the Australian DJs, who had suddenly found herself at the vortex of a global incident. They stressed they had not complained about the hoax call, and indeed offered praise for the staff. The hospital, too, stressed that Saldanha had not been reprimanded.

And yet the week can only be described as tragic, with the happiness so tarnished by the latest developments.

Saldanha was found dead early Friday at apartments affiliated with King Edward VII hospital in central London, where she worked for four years.

Police didn't release a cause of death, but said they didn't find anything suspicious. A coroner will make a determination on the cause.

2DayFM, the Australian station that performed the prank early Tuesday, said in a statement posted on Facebook and Twitter that the two disc jockeys, Mel Greig and Michael Christian, would not return to the station until further notice. They had apologized for the hoax Wednesday.

A spokeswoman for the station did not return messages seeking further comment. Greig and Christian's Twitter accounts were deactivated following the news of Saldanha's death.

Saldanha took the hoax call by the pair, who impersonated Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles to elicit information on the duchess, the hospital said. She later transferred the call to the nurse caring for the duchess, who was admitted to the hospital Monday with acute morning sickness.

"Our thoughts and deepest sympathies at this time are with her family and friends," hospital chief executive John Lofthouse said in a statement. "Everyone is shocked by the loss of a much loved and valued colleague."

St. James's Palace, the office of the duchess and her husband Prince William, also expressed sadness at the death, but insisted that it had not complained about the hoax.

"On the contrary, we offered our full and heartfelt support to the nurses involved and hospital staff at all times," the palace said in a statement.

Saldanha's family asked for privacy in a statement issued through London police.

"We as a family are deeply saddened by the loss of our beloved Jacintha," the statement said.

Australia's media watchdog, the Australian Communications and Media Authority, said it was looking into the hoax.

"These events are a tragedy for all involved, and I pass on my heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased nurse in London," the authority's chairman, Chris Chapman, said in a statement. "The ACMA does not propose to make any comments at this stage but will be engaging with the licensee, 2DayFM Sydney, around the facts and issues surrounding the prank call."

During the hoax call, a woman using the often-mimicked voice of Britain's monarch asked about the duchess' health. She was told by the second nurse who took the call from Saldanha that the duchess, the former Kate Middleton, "hasn't had any retching with me and she's been sleeping on and off."

The nurse went on to tell the radio personalities that the duchess had had an uneventful night, as a dog barking sound was heard in the background. The alleged queen and prince talk about traveling to the hospital to check in on the patient.

The hospital said it supported Saldanha in the aftermath of the call and that its phone protocols were under review.

The Australian station placed the recording of the conversation on its website, but later said it was sorry.

"We were very surprised that our call was put through. We thought we'd be hung up on as soon as they heard our terrible accents," Greig and Christian said in a joint statement with the station at the time. "We're very sorry if we've caused any issues and we're glad to hear that Kate is doing well."

The station's chief executive officer, Rhys Holleran, had spoken with the presenters after the nurse's death, and that both were deeply shocked. The hosts "have decided that they will not return to their radio show until further notice out of respect for what can only be described as a tragedy."

Christian's Twitter account has since been taken down.

Officials from St. James's Palace have said the duchess is not yet 12 weeks pregnant. The child would be the first for her and Prince William.
