PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Mitt Romney and Ron Paul rarely even acknowledge each other in the Republican presidential race, focusing their attention and attacks on rivals Newt Gingrich and Rick Santorum instead. That curious detente is being tested in Maine's caucuses this week, where Romney's reputation as a political shape shifter is going head-to-head with Paul's consistent libertarian views.

The caucuses began Feb. 4 and will continue through Saturday, when the state party will announce the results of the nonbinding presidential straw poll. Paul has campaigned hard in the state, and Romney has taken steps to shore up his position there to offset a potentially embarrassing loss following defeats in Missouri, Colorado and Minnesota.

Romney unexpectedly added two caucus appearances to his schedule Saturday morning, an indication that the campaign is concerned about the potential of another defeat in the low-turnout affair. And the significance also is great for Paul, who has staked his candidacy on winning at least a handful of smaller caucus states.

Santorum, who won the three contests earlier in the week, has not competed actively in Maine, nor has Gingrich. That leaves an unusually direct contest between Romney and Paul, pitting the former Massachusetts governor's establishment support and geographic advantages against the Texas congressman's relatively small but passionate band of activists.

In many ways, the two candidates could not be more different. While Romney has changed positions on a number of important issues including abortion, gay rights and health care policy, Paul has hewed to his small government message since entering Congress in 1978.

The Maine face-off also is renewing attention to the persistent deep divisions in the GOP ? the more moderate, business-oriented wing represented by Romney and the restless tea party voters who've been receptive to much of Paul's platform.

Romney's aides say they do not view Paul as a threat to winning the nomination. But Romney and his team have also been mindful not to do or say anything that might anger Paul's loyal supporters.

"I think he's being very careful because he knows how important the Ron Paul voters are ? they obviously represent a very different dynamic," said Mike Dennehy, a former top aide to Republican John McCain's 2008 campaign. "They are the most passionate and the most frustrated of any voters heading to the polls. And many of them are independents."

To be sure, Romney and Paul do share some similarities.

Both have decades-long marriages ? Romney and his wife, Ann, have been married for 43 years, while Paul and his wife, Carol, have been wed 55 years. The two couples each have five children and large broods of grandchildren.

Both Romney and Paul are physically fit and highly disciplined in their personal habits. They're also religious ? Romney is a Mormon, and Paul is a Baptist who leaves the campaign trail most Sundays in part to attend church services near his Texas home.

Both men are veterans of the 2008 Republican nomination contest and are on friendly personal terms, as are their wives, aides say. The relationship in part explains their unwillingness to attack one another.

Paul's TV ads, which have included harsh, pointed critiques of Santorum and Gingrich, have been much easier on Romney. Paul's campaign ran one ad casting all three rivals as "counterfeit conservatives," but otherwise he has not criticized Romney with the same intensity as he has Gingrich. He slammed Gingrich for his work for the federal mortgage giant Freddie Mac, and he cast Santorum as a "corporate lobbyist and Washington politician."

Paul has also defended Romney against attacks on Bain Capital, the investment firm where Romney made millions. Critics, including Gingrich, have criticized Bain for consolidating companies and laying off workers to make big profits for Romney and other executives at the firm.

"If he loses the election because he restructured companies, I don't think that's a healthy way to sort out the candidates," Paul said in New Hampshire when asked about Romney's history at Bain.

Romney won New Hampshire's first-in-the-nation primary, and Paul came in second.

Romney has returned the favor, occasionally praising Paul in debates for his understanding of health care. Paul is a former Air Force flight surgeon and obstetrician.

"You do exactly what Ron Paul said ... you have to get health care to start working more like a market," Romney said in a debate in December when asked how he would improve health coverage as president.

Romney reiterated that praise this week in a conference call with Maine supporters, saying Paul's years as a doctor gave him real world experience Gingrich and Santorum lack.

For Romney, staying on Paul's good side is also strategic.

Paul's presence in the race weakens Gingrich and Santorum, making things easier for Romney, the field's front-runner. Paul has earned more than 10 percent of the vote in every contest so far, except for the 7 percent he earned in Florida. And he's finished in the top three in three of the first eight contests. Those are voters who might otherwise support Gingrich or Santorum, since there is little overlap between Romney's voters and Paul's.

Paul may have something more tangible to give Romney as well: delegates.

So far, Paul has earned just nine delegates, but he's likely to accumulate many more because of the new proportional voting system adopted by most states. That means Paul may be in a position to arrange a transfer of some delegates to Romney at the Republican National Convention, which could be significant if Romney is locked in a tight race with another rival.

"If Mitt Romney remains on good relations with Ron Paul, they should be able to come to a polite agreement on how that will work," Dennehy said.

Man tries to burn wife, scorches himself instead

Authorities say a man is in critical condition Tuesday after he tried to set his wife on fire, but burned himself instead.

Hillsborough County Sheriff?s Office deputies said that Matthew Wong, 50, chased his newly separated wife of 25 years with two bottles of gasoline.

Wong got the gasoline on himself when he attempted to throw it on her, according to authorities.

Wong's wife took refuge inside of a neighbor?s apartment, but Wong poured the gasoline on the apartment?s entrance, deputies said. When he lit the entryway on fire, the flame engulfed him.

Police say neighbors put the fire out with an extinguisher and a blanket and saved Wong. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital?s Burn Center where he was listed in critical condition.

When police searched Wong?s car, they found that the side and back windows were covered and taped shut with garbage bags and blankets. Authorities also found gasoline, gloves and tape inside the car.

His wife was not injured in the incident.

'Hunger Games' Won't Be Narrated By Katniss

Will we be hearing Jennifer Lawrence narrate throughout the film via voice-over or will we see the action from multiple characters' perspectives?

Today is our lucky day, because we have an answer straight from director Gary Ross himself, who told MTV News recently that after much careful consideration he is not using any voice-over.

"I'm not using voice-over for her. This thing is all from Katniss' perspective," he said of the story. "It is a first-person point of view. How do we put the viewer immediately and urgently in that experience they had when they read the book and they're in Katniss Everdeen's shoes? A lot of that is done cinematically. I spent a lot of time wondering and thinking about at the beginning of this process, 'What does it really mean to be in the character's point of view cinematically?' I looked at a lot of really interesting references for that, but it comes down to: You don't know more than the character knows."

Ross said we will be experiencing everything from Katniss' perspective; we just won't be hearing her talk us through it.

"You wonder about what she's wondering about, you worry about what she's worrying about," he explained. "You don't know things she doesn't know, and as such, you wander and experience things through her eyes, so that's the first job: How do we make people feel they're walking in Katniss' shoes and encountering the same obstacles and challenges she is?" he said. "A lot is done cinematically and a lot is having someone as good as Jen Lawrence."

The "Pleasantville" and "Seabiscuit" helmer was cagey when asked about the specific look and style of the film but did promise they did everything they could to make things as realistic and believable as possible.

"I don't want to start giving specific scenes away, I know you understand that. I will say movies can do a lot in imagery where you can assimilate at lot of the world there pretty quickly," he said when asked how much backstory he felt he needed to include or whether he'll just jump right into the story at the start of the film. "The trick there is to make the world as real and as specific as it was when you read the book, be very precise about the production design and what this world looks like, and I think we've created a pretty vivid world."

Jordan Leopold injures Sabres coach Lindy Ruff in practice with leg sweep (Update)

Many NHL players are willing to go through walls for their coach. Buffalo Sabres defenseman Jordan Leopold, however, accidentally went through his coach during practice on Monday.

According to Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News, Leopold lost his balance during a 1-on-1 drill with Ville Leino and slid into coach Lindy Ruff from behind. "Ruff?went airbone and landed hard to the ice, letting out a scream as he?landed that echoed through the empty arena," writes Harrington.

"I lost my breath," Leopold said of going to the ice and seeing the impending collision with the NHL's longest-tenured coach. "I was looking back and I kind of yelled, "Are you all right? Are you all right?' Right away, no. That wasn't a good thing.

"I know Lindy is a tough guy, played a lot of games in the NHL and played through a lot of injuries. Your body ends up hurting more and more the older you get but that was one of those unexpected ones. Those are dangerous."

Later in the day, the Sabres announced the Ruff suffered three broken ribs in the fall, but is expected to be at practice on Tuesday.

The Sabres aren't in action again until Wednesday night against the Boston Bruins. By that time, we imagine, Brendan Shanahan will have reviewed this video for any supplemental discipline. ("As the video shows, Leopold is looking directly at the back of his coach's skates as he hydroplanes ?")

Well lets hope so since I've an idea that I would rather used than to see it languish like so many others. Its fairly good, just needs to be fleshed out and possibly changed up a bit, depends on how things get on. Here is the story so far-

Fairies, Lepracauns(sp) and Pixies are in a war, either against each other or in an alliance against other mythical creatures I don't entirely know and quite frankly can work either way; Humans aren't necessarily out matched so much as caught off guard as the wars unravel the screen of secrecy that has been up for near millennia or some extremely large amount of time that seems appropriate. various diplomatic missions and treaties in the earlier years more or less separated the mythical and mundane quite a bit and not even the mythical beings really remember the exact details, when why or really care other than, it exists and it still holds (though to a greatly reduced extent). The treaty isn't broken so much that, as knowledge of it dissipated, the treaty itself dissolved.

There were several copies but all of them were lost- the Humans had plenty of them but the rise of the Roman empire saw a couple of them lost and the rest preserved, even copied over several times to ensure survivability, but when Rome fell...well the vast majority of them fell as the Empire broke apart. The Byzantine Empire, the Eastern half of the old Roman empire lasted another thousand years after the Original empire fell but only had a small handful of the documents and when it fell those documents were lost. French journalist Jean-Baptiste Alphonse Karr once famously stated, ?Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.? Or in English, ?The more it changes, the more it stays the same.? This very much applies to the annual Retromobile show in Paris; subtle tweaks are made every year, but it nevertheless retains the same atmosphere and remains one of the must-visit events of the year.

In 2011, we saw one of the more substantial changes when the length of the event was cut from 10 to five days. Since the event is especially popular with exhibitors, this resulted in increased demand for floor space, so for 2012, the show was moved to halls 3 and 2.2 of the Porte de Versailles exhibition centre.

The Mullin Automotive Museum included the $30 million Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic among its collection of Art Deco masterpieces. In addition to the familiar exhibitors, the 2012 Retromobile hosted a selection of cars from the Mullin Automotive Museum, celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Ferrari 250 GTO and had displays for amphibious cars and French one-off sports cars.

Two auctions were also held in Paris during the same week: one by local company Artcurial Motorcars as part of Retromobile and another by Bonhams at La Halle Freyssinet.

Another thing that never changes is our arrival at the crack of dawn on the opening day to capture the show before the hordes arrive. This year the result is this 170-shot gallery, which also includes the two auctions.

Headlining the 2012 Retromobile show was a selection of 10 cars sent by the Mullin Automotive Museum from Oxnard, California. Opened in 2010, the fabulous museum is a tribute to the great Art Deco era dominated by French manufacturers and coachbuilders.

Although not officially part of the collection, the absolute star of the museum was the Bugatti Type 57 SC Atlantic that was acquired by an anonymous owner for more than $30 million at around the same time the museum opened.

The famed Delahaye Type 165 Figoni & Falaschi was another highlight of the Mullin Museum collector cars. (Photo: Wouter Melissen) The Atlantic was joined on a remarkably accessible stand by a fine selection of French and French-bodied machinery. Among them were no fewer than four V12 Delahayes of about a dozen built in period. Three were of the Type 145 racing variety, two of which were later converted to road-car specification by Chapron. The surviving racing car was the winner of the fabled Million Franc price awarded in 1938 by the French motorsport federation and industry for winning the French Grand Prix at Monthlery and, more importantly, beating the German rivals.

The fourth V12 Delahaye was a Type 165, which at the end of the 1930s was the manufacturer's top-of-the-range model. Clothed by Figoni & Falaschi, this curvaceous Cabriolet originally served to represent Delahaye at the 1939 New York World Fair. The Museum's Voisin C25 Aerodyne, fresh from its Best in Show win at Pebble Beach, was also on display.

Bonhams briefly was the official auctioneer of Retromobile after its takeover of the motoring department of rival Christie's. When French auction company Artcurial took over, the British auctioneers continued to host a sale in Paris.

This year, La Halle Freyssinet near Gare d'Austerlitz, a 1929 steel-and-concrete building previously used by the French railway for equipment maintenance, was chosen as the venue for the Bonhams sale. Bonhams brought 35 motorcycles and more than 100 cars, ranging from a Fiat support van to an exquisite Amilcar racer.

The sale also included a selection of unusual Rolls-Royces and Bentleys, which sold remarkably well. The same could not be said of a fabulous collection of Morgans, which struggled to find new owners.

Libyan Sufis mark Prophet's birthday despite tension (Reuters)

TRIPOLI (Reuters) ? Libyan Sufis staged a joyous parade through the heart of Tripoli on Saturday to mark the Prophet Mohammad's birthday, defying radical Salafi Muslims pressuring them to scrap the centuries-old tradition.

Chanting hymns to the beat of drums and cymbals, marchers choked the narrow alleys of the walled old town to celebrate the feast of Mawlid, a favorite event for the pious Sufis whose spirituality is an integral part of North African Islam.

The celebrations were the first since the fall last August of Muammar Gaddafi, who kept religion under firm control during his 42-year dictatorship, and went ahead despite concerns that hardliners might attack the marchers as heretics.

The tension between the traditional Sufis and the Salafis, a group influenced by Saudi Wahhabis and other ultra-conservative foreign Islamists, has become a key divide in Libyan politics as parties begin to form to contest free elections in June.

"We fought the tyrant (Gaddafi) because he was a dictator and we don't want anyone like him to govern us again," said biology teacher Mohammad Aref. "We are the majority."

Emhemed Elashhab, the sheikh (Islamic scholar) at one Islamic school where marchers assembled, said there were fewer than 2,000 violent Islamists in Libya. "All normal people are against their ideas," he said.

EITHER BATS OR THIEVES

Sufism, a mystical strain among both Sunnis and Shi'ites, dates back to Islam's early days. Apart from the standard prayers, Sufi devotions include singing hymns, chanting the names of God or dancing to heighten awareness of the divine.

Sufis also build shrines to revered holy men and scholars and make pilgrimages to them. Hardline Islamists consider these practices grave sins that must be stopped, by force if needed.

One night last month, extremists bulldozed through a wall of an old cemetery in the eastern city of Benghazi, destroyed its tombs and carried off 29 bodies of respected sages and scholars. They also demolished a nearby Sufi school.

"The extremists have taken advantage of the lack of order," said Jamel Abdul Muhi. "Those who work in the dark are either bats or thieves. They are cowards."

Hisham Krekshi, deputy chairman of the Tripoli Local Council, expressed satisfaction the march was taking place peacefully despite concerns about reprisals from hardliners, who spread pamphlets in recent days urging people to shun the event.

"This has been around for 14 centuries, you can't stop it," he said in one of the main souks, where the gold traders and cloth merchants had shut their shops for the day.

INCENSE AND ALMOND MILK

Festivities began with Sufi devotions in traditional Islamic schools in the old town. At Zawiya Kabira, the largest one, men chanted rounds of rousing hymns in an incense-filled room while other distributed almond milk and biscuits to those outside.

Boys lit firecrackers as lines of men danced out of the school and down the alleys, with women watching from balconies and doorways as the procession passed.

"Beloved Prophet of God, be the enemy of all His enemies," was one of the slogans they chanted in Sufi-style repetition.

At one point, marchers spilled out onto Martyrs Square, the old Green Square where Gaddafi used to address his supporters.

Najat Al-Mughrabi, waiting with other women at a corner to watch their sons march by, said she was not afraid of the extremists. "They couldn't do anything before (under Gaddafi), how can they do anything now?" she asked.

Even if the Mawlid holiday passes without incident, Sufi leaders say they remain concerned because many post-Gaddafi religious officials have Salafi leanings and have been appointing like-minded imams to mosques around the country.

Salafi preaching is also widespread on Libyan television and radio, they say, which raises concerns among Sufis that they are being outflanked by a new and more political form of Islam.
