(AP) ? Doctors treating Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for a blood clot say the clot formed in her head but they stress that they are confident she will make a full recovery.

In an update Monday on Clinton's condition, her doctors say the blood clot did not result in a stroke, or neurological damage. The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear.

Clinton's doctors say that to help dissolve the clot, they are treating her with blood thinners. They say she will be released once the medication dose has been established.

In their update, the doctors say the 65-year-old secretary of state is making excellent progress and is in good spirits.

Senate leaders work to avoid New Year's "fiscal cliff"

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Congressional negotiators burrowed into their Capitol offices on Saturday to see if they can stop the economy from falling off of a "fiscal cliff" in just three days when the biggest tax increases ever to hit Americans in one shot are scheduled to begin.

Aides to Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, and Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell were expected to work through the day on a possible compromise that would set aside $600 billion in tax increases and across-the-board government spending cuts that are set to kick in next week.

A variety of lower taxes are scheduled to expire on December 31. If allowed to rise, the approximately $500 billion value of the revenue increases would represent a historic hike when taken together.

The combined punch of the tax increases and spending cuts would likely put the U.S. economy into a downward spiral, according to economists' forecasts.

"We're now at the point where, in just a couple days, the law says that every American's tax rates are going up. Every American's paycheck will get a lot smaller. And that would be the wrong thing to do for our economy," President Barack Obama said in his weekly radio and Internet address, which was broadcast on Saturday.

At midday, McConnell walked into his office on the second floor of the Capitol. Asked by waiting journalists if he thought his efforts would be successful, McConnell responded: "I hope so."

A Senate Republican leadership aide said that it might not be known until sometime on Sunday whether these talks bear fruit. That is when leaders are expected to brief their rank-and-file members.

The Senate is scheduled to hold a rare Sunday session beginning at 1 p.m. EST (1800 GMT), but it was not clear whether the chamber would have fiscal cliff legislation to act upon.

Reid and McConnell and their staffs held last-ditch negotiations Friday night and resumed on Saturday with no guarantees that their efforts would pay off. Republicans remained opposed to Obama's demand that households making above $250,000 a year see their income tax rate rise to 39.6 percent, from the current 35 percent, in order to help tame budget deficits.

In recent days, some aides have said that a $400,000 threshold, instead of $250,000, has been discussed as a possible compromise.

PESSIMISTIC OUTLOOK

Democrats and Republicans also are jousting over what to do about inheritance taxes on estates.

Unless Congress acts, the tax is set to jump on January 1 to 55 percent with the first $1 million exempted for individuals. Currently, there is a 35 percent tax and a $5 million exemption.

One Democratic aide was pessimistic that McConnell would come up with a counteroffer that Reid would find acceptable. Such a counteroffer would have to be calibrated in a way that also could attract votes from conservative House Republicans, many of whom have balked at any tax rate increases.

Similarly, a senior House Republican aide on Saturday voiced pessimism about prospects for a deal.

"It's hard to see Reid agreeing to anything that can get the votes of the majority of the majority in the House, thereby allowing a bipartisan accomplishment," the aide said. A "majority of the majority" refers to the 241 Republicans who are in the 435-member House.

The Republican aide placed the blame squarely on Democrats, as many Republican members have done publicly, saying that going off the fiscal cliff is a "policy upside" for them. "Higher taxes, devastating defense cuts. The polls tell them they can win the PR war in January. From their perspective, why stop the cliff dive?"

Democrats, in turn, have publicly accused Republican House Speaker John Boehner of preferring to put off any tough fiscal cliff votes until after a January 3 House election in which he is expected to win another two-year term as speaker.

If McConnell and Reid can manage to reach a deal on inheritance taxes and raising income tax rates on the wealthiest, they likely would throw into the compromise some other fiscal cliff solutions.

Those could include extending an array of other expiring tax breaks, such as one that encourages companies to conduct research and development. Also, Congress wants to prevent a steep pay-cut in January for doctors who treat elderly Medicare patients.

Lawmakers also want to prevent middle-class taxpayers from inadvertently creeping into a higher tax bracket, known as the alternative minimum tax, intended for the wealthiest.

If the Reid-McConnell effort fails, Obama has asked the Senate to hold a vote on Monday on a "basic package" that would stop taxes from going up on the middle class and would extend long-term unemployment benefits that are about to expire. If it passed the Senate, its fate would be in the hands of the Republican-controlled House.

Actress Katie Holmes' Broadway show to close

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Actress Katie Holmes' return to Broadway has been cut short, with producers announcing that the play "Dead Accounts" in which she co-stars will close on January 6, nearly two months early.

Holmes, the ex-wife of actor Tom Cruise, played Lorna, a wan, beaten-down woman living with her parents in the five-character play by Theresa Rebeck which opened on November 29 to mostly negative reviews.

No reason was given for the play's early closing, but media reports said it was earning only a fraction of its box office potential.

Many reviewers said Holmes acquitted herself alongside a roster of Broadway veterans, who included Tony-winning actor Norbert Leo Butz as the brother who returns to his Midwestern family and unleashes havoc in the comedy.

The New York Daily News said "she throws herself gamely into her second Broadway show ... (but) Holmes' efforts add up to zilch."

Most critics laid blame on an undeveloped, sketchy play by the author of last season's better-received "Seminar."

Holmes, 34, reached a high-profile divorce settlement with Cruise last summer. She lives in New York with her young daughter, Suri. Holmes will co-star in an upcoming film which will be a modernization of Chekhov's "The Seagull" along with Allison Janney and William Hurt.

ZTE Grand X passes through FCC with T-Mobile radio and branding

ZTE Grand X on T-Mobile

A revision of the ZTE Grand X (read our review) has just passed through the FCC, undoubtedly destined to land on T-Mobile. Not only does the device have FCC clearance to operate on T-Mobile's 1700/2100MHz AWS frequencies for HSPA+, but also has a nice bit of T-Mobile branding on the back. Other than the new radio and branding, we're likely looking at the same device that was released internationally a few months back -- a 4.3-inch qHD (540x960) screen, Tegra 2 processor, 5MP camera and stock Ice Cream Sandwich.

T-Mobile regularly picks up some of these less than mainstream devices, and usually ends up offering them at pretty compelling price points. The Grand X is no slouch by any means, and should be a solid mid-range offering for many customers.

2012: The year malware surged 'dramatically'

1 hr.

December is "prediction season" in the cybersecurity industry. Every major anti-virus software maker and digital-security provider issues its own forecasts of what computer users face in the coming year.?

So far this month, the predictions for 2013 look a lot like those for 2012: more?Android malware, increased cyberattacks by nation-states and greater activity by "hacktivist" groups such as Anonymous.?

However, a few companies go back and check their own predictions at the end of the year to see what they got right ??and wrong.?

One company that does so is Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab, one of the top five anti-virus companies in the world.?

"In 2011, we really saw a number of things rising up: hacktivism; big?database breaches; attacks against Androids; attacks against Macs; data espionage became daily business in 2011," said Roel Schouwenberg, senior researcher at Kaspersky's Boston-area office. "When we look at 2012, we saw a further evolution of all these new trends."?

Kaspersky made the following predictions for 2012:?

  • Hacktivist?groups, who attack computer systems for political or social reasons, would continue to increase their activities?
  • A higher rate of "advanced persistent threat" attacks, or state-sponsored espionage efforts?
  • More incidents of cyberwarfare involving customized, state-sponsored malware?
  • Attacks on software and game developers such as Adobe, Microsoft, Oracle and Sony?
  • More aggressive actions from law-enforcement agencies against cybercriminals?
  • An increasing rate in the growth of threats to the Android mobile platform?
  • Successful attacks on Apple's Mac OS X computer platform?

Let's examine five of the top security incidents that shaped 2012 and check the accuracy of the Kaspersky researchers in light of those predictions.?

1. More Mac OS X malware
Security experts had anticipated an outbreak of malware targeting Mac OS X for years; 2012 was when it finally happened.?

The bug that did it, called the?Flashback or Flashfake Trojan, first appeared near the end of 2011, but didn't reach its peak rate of infection until March of 2012.?

Flashback infected more than 700,000 Macs around the world, the largest known Mac OS X infection to date.?

"In 2011, we predicted that we would see more Mac malware attacks," said Kaspersky Lab's Costin Raiu and David Emm in a?blog posting. "We just never expected it would be this dramatic."?

Why did Flashback wreak such havoc??

One reason was a well-documented Java vulnerability, which Apple took a long time to patch even after it had been publicly disclosed. The Flashback authors took advantage of Apple's delay to incorporate the Java exploit into their otherwise unremarkable creation.?

The second reason was the general?lack of awareness among Mac users?about security. Proper anti-virus software would have stopped Flashback's attack, yet most Mac users felt they didn't need it.?

Flashback wasn't the only successful attack on Mac OS X systems in 2012. There were multiple espionage-related attacks on Macs used by Tibetan dissidents and exiles. Some of the attacks used corrupted files purporting to?come straight from the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled leader.?

"The espionage angle may be a bigger factor for Mac right now than regular consumer malware," Schouwenberg said. "For general cybercrime, most criminals go after Windows because that's what they know. That's what's easiest for them."?

"But when it comes to these targeted attacks, the attackers go after whichever machines the targets are using. So if the targets are using Macs, they'll go after Macs."?

Schouwenberg said in terms of the proportion of available systems infected, Flashback was the most successful malware outbreak of the year.?

"When you look at relative market share, the Flashback malware in terms of prevalence was the size of [the infamous Windows worm]?Conficker," he said. "This was an absolutely huge event in the Apple world. When you extrapolate [the number of Macs infected] to Windows numbers, that's about 10 million."?

2. Cyberweapons: Flame??
Cyberwarfare is a term that often gets hyped up, especially when a politician or general is speaking.?

In fact, the?Stuxnet worm, which crippled an Iranian uranium-enrichment facility in the summer of 2010, was for nearly two years the only known cyberweapon that had destroyed anything.?

That changed this past spring, when a series of cyberattacks destroyed computer systems at oil facilities in Iran, as well as in the offices of the Iranian oil ministry.?

Wiper, the malware thought to be responsible for the attacks, was never found, although certain tell-tale signs indicated it was similar to Stuxnet and its cousin Duqu.?

During the investigation in May, however, researchers from Kaspersky, the Iranian computer emergency response team MAHER and the CrySyS Lab at Budapest University in Hungary discovered something else ?possibly the most sophisticated piece of malware ever seen. Kaspersky's team called it "Flame."?

The size, age and sophistication of Flame were startling. It was 20 megabytes in size, as large as a complex smartphone game, while most malware is only a few dozen kilobytes in size.?

Flame contained a dozen different modules that could be added and subtracted according to the task at hand, which made it extremely versatile as spyware.?

It could map out networks, index files, record audio and video, log keystrokes, take screenshots and archive emails and instant messages. When its job was done, it would destroy all signs of itself on any 32-bit Windows PC, and sometimes the host system as well.?

Yet despite its size, Flame was at least five years old at the time of its discovery ?an enormous amount of time for a piece of malware to be "in the wild."?

As?Raiu said in a press release, Flame was "an example of a complex malicious program that could exist undetected for an extended amount of time while collecting massive amounts of data and sensitive information from its victims."?

A couple of weeks after its discovery, Dutch researchers found that Flame's creators had pulled off a mathematical breakthrough.?

Using unknown techniques, Flame's creators had created a nearly-impossible?cryptologic collision?that allowed Flame to present itself as a signed, genuine Windows update package direct from Microsoft. No anti-virus software could have stopped it.?

?Gauss...?
In August, Kaspersky researchers found a highly sophisticated Trojan in the Middle East, this time spying on Lebanese banks.?

Like ordinary criminal banking Trojans, this new malware, which Kaspersky researchers dubbed "Gauss," stole online-banking credentials to break into accounts. Yet Gauss didn't steal any money ?just information.

In their year-end review, Raiu and Emmer said Gauss added a "new dimension to nation-state cyber-campaigns," even if it was nowhere as sophisticated as Flame.?

"It appears there is a strong cyber component to the existing geopolitical tensions ?perhaps bigger than anyone expected," they added.?

? and Shamoon?
That would prove to be an understatement. Later in August, Shamoon, a piece of especially destructive, yet simple, malware, made?its world debut.?

Named after a piece of text embedded deep in its code, Shamoon launched an attack against the state-owned Saudi Arabian oil company Saudi Aramco and destroyed data on more than 30,000 computers. ??

Shamoon was crude but effective. It searched an infected system for certain files, sent a list of those files to a remote server, and then methodically deleted key parts of the installed Windows system, rendering the infected machine useless.?

"You have the hacktivist movement claiming credit for that attack, which may or may not be the case," Schouwenberg said.?

"Shamoon wasn't really that sophisticated, but when you look at the relevance of the incidence, it's extremely, extremely important," Schouwenberg added, "especially when you consider the fact that Saudi Aramco announced just recently that they strongly believe that Shamoon's real target was to mess with the oil production rather than just sabotaging the machines in the corporate network."?

Kaspersky researchers said many details about Shamoon were still unknown, such as how the malware infected Saudi Aramco's systems in the first place, or who was behind the malware.?

Some observers suspect Iran created and used Shamoon as an attempt to cripple Saudi Arabia's oil production, which would cause oil prices to rise, benefiting cash-strapped Iran.?

3. Exponential growth in Android malware?
During 2011, there was an explosion in the number of?malicious threats against the Android platform. It was obvious that the trend would go on.?

Kaspersky, as well as most of its competitors, accurately predicted that the number of threats for Android would continue to grow at an alarming rate in 2012.?

"We predicted we would see an explosion in Android malware and that's what we saw," Schouwenberg said. "There is a huge amount of Android malware these days, although not anywhere near the amount of Windows malware that we see. But it's grown very dramatically."?

How dramatically??

"The number of samples we received continued to grow and peaked in June 2012, when we identified almost 7,000 malicious Android programs," Raiu and Emmer wrote. "Overall, in 2012, we identified more than 35,000 malicious Android programs, which is about six times more than in 2011."?

So why is there so much Android malware, and so little malware targeting its competition, Apple's iOS??

It's because?iOS is locked down tight. Apple oversees every part of the hardware and software development, and strictly controls which apps can be installed on iOS devices.?

Android, however, is a free-for-all. Dozens of manufacturers make hundreds of Android devices, and the operating system is a little different on each one. Manufacturers and cellular carriers?refuse to update Android?in a timely manner, resulting in security holes that are left unpatched for months or years.?

"Off-road" app markets flourish, especially in China where access to the official Google Play store is restricted. Google has belatedly tightened security in both Android itself and in the Google Play store, yet its efforts have a long way to go before they can match Apple's.?

Still, the tighter security in the latest versions of Android may be having an effect. Kaspersky's own figures show that while the number of new Android threats continued to grow in the second half of 2012, the rate of growth began to slow.?

4. Advanced persistent threats go quiet?
Advanced persistent threat hackers, i.e. cyberspies, were certainly active in 2012, yet didn't have the spectacular successes they'd had in previous years.?

Perhaps the most visible attack on Western targets was the discovery in September 2012 that two pieces of malware had been signed using a?valid Adobe code-signing certificate.?

Apparently, someone, somehow, had broken into an Adobe server and stolen authentication certificates.?

"This discovery belongs to the same chain of extremely targeted attacks performed by sophisticated threat actors commonly described as APT," wrote Raiu and Emmer. "The fact that a high profile company like Adobe was compromised in this way redefines the boundaries and possibilities that are becoming available for these high-level attackers."?

5. Data breach after data breach?
One thing that Kaspersky failed to anticipate in 2012 was the seemingly unending parade of huge data breaches involving companies and organizations with inadequate security.?

In early June, the business-networking website LinkedIn had?6.4 million passwords stolen. The passwords were encrypted, but in a very simple way that meant most could easily be deciphered.?

A day later, online-dating service eHarmony suffered a similar breach,?losing 1.5 million passwords, also poorly encrypted.?

In July, struggling Web giant Yahoo was embarrassed by a data breach that revealed?450,000 passwords?had been stored without any encryption at all. It wasn't entirely Yahoo's fault, since the database was acquired with the 2010 purchase of another company, but it was also evident that no one had bothered to check.?

Worst of all was the revelation in late October that vital personally identifiable information on?3.8 million adult residents of South Carolina, plus 1.9 million dependents and 700,000 businesses, had been stolen from the state tax agency.?

Entire tax records, containing names, addresses, dates of birth and, worst of all, Social Security numbers, were all stored unencrypted. Virtually the entire state population of 4.7 million people was put at grave risk of identity theft.?

Weeks after the breach was revealed, the state government was blaming the federal IRS for not providing strong security guidelines, and was itself being criticized by security experts for not revealing enough about what had happened.?

Looking back, and forward?
"There isn't too much that was shocking news over 2012, just these up-and-coming things [from] 2011 that really established themselves in 2012," Schouwenberg said. "But we also saw some examples of new nation-state [campaigns] like Flame and Gauss. But from my personal point of view, the most significant event of the year was Shamoon."?

As for 2013, "we expect the next year to be packed with high-profile attacks on consumers, businesses and governments alike, and to see the first signs of notable attacks against the critical industrial infrastructure," Raiu said in a company press release.?"The most notable trends of 2013 will be new examples of cyberwarfare operations, increasing targeted attacks on businesses and new, sophisticated mobile threats."

Iran to conduct navy drill in Strait of Hormuz in December

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran will begin six days of naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz at the end of this week, an Iranian naval commander said on Tuesday, an exercise meant to showcase its military capabilities in what is a vital oil and gas shipping route.

The "Velayat 91" drills will be held from Friday to Wednesday across an area of about 1 million square kilometers in the Strait of Hormuz, the Gulf of Oman and northern parts of the Indian Ocean, said Habibollah Sayyari, according to Iranian media.

Iranian officials have often said that Iran could block the strait - through which 40 percent of the world's sea-borne oil exports pass - if it came under military attack over its disputed nuclear program.

Iran held a similar 10-day drill last December and sent a submarine and a destroyer into the Gulf four months ago at the same time as U.S. and allied navies were conducting exercises in the same waters to practice keeping oil shipping lanes open.

Sayyari was quoted as saying the new drill would test the navy's missile systems, combat ships, submarines and patrol and reconnaissance methods.

"In this exercise we will use the navy's newest weapons and tactics," Sayyari said. "Certainly we will observe the marine borders of neighboring states and will carry out our exercises according to international laws and regulations."

A heavy Western naval presence in the Gulf is meant to deter any attempt to block the waterway.

The odds are good that if you?ve used a computer before, you?ve probably had an brilliant idea for new online business. When you have a good idea, be sure you?re able to effectively market it that so you can create business for yourself. Read the Internet promotion tips contained in this article to ensure success.

If there?s a signature option when posting on forums and blogs, use it. If you post a lot in forums or on message boards, your link can appear in every single post, if you put it into your signature box. Include your link in every business email you send out. What is your goal? Keep it in the front of your mind and stick with it. Take the time to learn what sort of articles will be most effective and which are the best directories to submit them to. There are directories that vary in their requirements for their articles. They may wish for you to have a certain number of words, for instance. You must be sure to follow their rules to ensure that your submission will be accepted.

TIP! To help achieve business success and to get a larger customer base, it is very important you use social media as a part of your Internet marketing strategy. Facebook fan pages give clients as well as customers a place to give feedback that anyone can view.

Give your customers a free gift every time that they buy from your website to inspire customer loyalty. Sometimes, it is easy to overlook simple things such as this, but offering freebies can keep customers coming back.

Ask your cell phone company if you can have two phone numbers on your account which ring differently when a call comes in. Don?t neglect this tip, as it could mean the difference between growing your customer base and missing out on opportunities!

TIP! Open an account on a social networking site like MySpace, and send information and links to people in a targeted market. Avoid the possibility of being sued for harassment by refraining from sending unwanted marketing messages through social networking sites.

Normally, you shouldn?t mix business and pleasure, but this is an exception. The reason being, that this can be viewed as more of a lucrative hobby rather than a high-pressure situation. Think about doing it with a spouse.

You can approach other online businesses and attempt to sell package deals of products or services that the retailer can sell at discounted prices. This sort of packaging can increase income for many partners, and create effective links between different market niches. An example of this would be using an online book agent. They help to negotiate prices for people to make sure they get the best rates on things like airfare, hotels and car rentals. This is ideal for the businesses that have products linked in a complementary manner, rather than a rivalry.

TIP! Direct a certain percentage of profits to a charity. Let your customers know that you do this.

Use social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook as a part of your Affiliate marketing campaign. Social media venues permit you to stay in touch with your customers, making it quick and simple to advise them of promotions or updates. Although, you should not advertise too often as this can push your customers away. Combine your marketing promotions with helpful and valuable informational posts.

Be sure to include your signature on both personal and business e mails. This is like an online business card. When your email recipients get an opportunity to see your business, it can lead to more traffic and higher revenue.

Make sure that your site is interesting and well-designed. The website that you create is the very center of the web marketing strategy you employ. Your website should be well-designed and interesting to those that enter, so that they want to stay. Make sure your design engages your target audience so that they will spend more time browsing through it.

TIP! When you send out correspondence to members of your mailing list, be sure to personalize it. People are often turned off by impersonal emails.

Use these tips to increase your chances of launching a successful business. Use the strategies discussed here to create an inventive approach for your own specific niche. With a little persistence and motivation, you will be on the path to success in no time.

Keep your home safe for the holidays

INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) - Many families that travel across the country during the holiday season often leave their homes vulnerable to thieves.???

Indiana State Police often see a spike in thefts throughout the holiday season.

Before travelers head out the door for Christmas they might want to double check their house.

Sergeant Joe Watts, with the Indiana State Police said an easy item to grab is presents.

If a family leaves town, Watts says they'll want to make sure to hide their gifts and cover their windows. It could help deter a thief from snooping.

Watts says, "They'll simply bust the glass, reach in and unlock the door or window and gain a quick entry. What they're looking for are mostly firearms, jewelry and electronic items. Something that will give them quick cash and is valuable but yet they can get out of the house in a quick time."

Watts says watch out for writing a quick message or post because it could make you an open target.

A good rule of thumb, avoid social media sites before you leave town to help make it less tempting to share travel plans, our sister station WTHI reports.

"It let's the burglars know, hey that family is going to be out of town for seven to ten days. They may be out of country so we'll have plenty of time to do what we need to do at that residence. So that is a terrible idea," said Watts.

Finally, Watts says have a plan in place before you head out.

"Make sure you lock doors, make sure you lock windows, and make sure you have a trusted family member or friend that's watching your house for you. Lights on timers are a good option that way people don't know when you are coming or going," said Watts.

These tips could keep your presents safe and thieves' presence away.

Indiana State Police say most burglaries happen between 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m.

Could There Be a Coup Against Boehner?

If any Republicans are plotting to overthrow John Boehner as House speaker, they aren?t making a lot of noise about it. Then again, successful coup d'etats are organized with whispers, not widely telegraphed, and typically denied right up until they are launched.

?No, I?m not,? Boehner said on Friday, when asked at a news conference if he was concerned about losing his post, as his No. 2 in command, Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., stood by his side.

Still, the refusal on Thursday night of at least 35 of Boehner?s fellow Republicans to join in supporting his fiscal-cliff ?Plan B? to avert income-tax rates from rising at year?s end on most Americans, forcing him to embarrassingly pull his own legislation from floor consideration, is being taken by some outside groups as added evidence of a speakership in dire trouble ? or, even that Boehner should step down now.

Some conservative anti-Boehner forces outside of Congress are even floating names of members they?d like to see replace him. Those include GOP Reps. Jim Jordan of Ohio ? identified by colleagues as a ringleader of the conservative hold-outs on Thursday ? Jeb Hensarling of Texas, Tom Price of Georgia, and Cantor. Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis., fresh off of his losing vice presidential bid, was also being mentioned.

None of those lawmakers, predictably, are saying they will challenge Boehner. But under the House rules for electing a speaker, that?s not necessarily how they would go about leading such a revolt anyway.

There are even some murmurs within the House Republican Conference about what might happen when the House holds its next speaker election on Jan. 3 to open up the new 113th Congress.

This talk is not solely the result of Thursday night?s events, of course. That setback for Boehner represented only the latest in a string of episodes over two years as speaker in which he has been unable to bring the rowdiest and most conservative of his own rank-and-file members in line.

It has been a chronic and perhaps tiring circumstance for many even in his party. But it is one that is now magnified by the pressures of a need to find common ground with President Obama and Democrats to avert the looming expiration of Bush-era tax cuts and deep spending cuts set to kick in with the new year.

A successful strategy to oust Boehner would not require a challenger to pick up the support of a majority of GOP members.?Rather, it would take less than half of the number of Thursday night?s 35 or more holdouts to block Boehner from keeping the speaker?s gavel.

That's because under House rules, a speaker must be elected with an ?absolute majority? of all the House member votes cast, Republican and Democrat. That means the winner ? who is not required to even be a member of Congress ? must take at least 50 percent, plus one vote.?

For instance, if all 233 Republicans and 200 Democrats who will start out in the 113th Congress actually show up to vote for speaker, just 17 Republican defections from Boehner to anyone else could jeopardize his reelection by denying him the 217-vote absolute majority. And if no candidate receives the requisite majority, the roll call is repeated until a speaker is elected.

An example of a worst-case scenario occurred at the start of the 34th Congress in 1855, when no candidate for speaker could secure a majority for 133 ballots. For Boehner, though, even just being forced to a second ballot might be embarrassing enough as a de facto ?no confidence? vote that he would decide to step aside for another House Republican name to be considered.

Such maneuvering would not amount to Republicans handing the speaker?s gavel to Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi of California as the alternative, because she would not have enough votes, either. It would be purely about preventing Boehner from getting the required 217 votes.

Such a conspiracy, however, would require two key ingredients.

One is finding 17 House Republicans, or more, willing to publicly vote for someone other than Boehner on an initial ballot and even later ones, and staying unified in that effort ?all the while knowing that retribution from Boehner will likely await them if they fail.

Then, if Boehner does eventually give up, an alternative candidate from among House Republicans must be able to rally an absolute majority of votes. There are rumors, which could not be substantiated in interviews with several House Republicans, of colleagues quietly trying to line up support for themselves as speaker if Boehner runs into trouble.

But one self-described conservative said he is aware of efforts to organize some show of dissatisfaction with Boehner during the speaker election on Jan. 3. This same member said that if Boehner were to not be elected on the first ballot, it would be tantamount to a "no-confidence vote.? He said that would likely lead to some energetic closed-door conferences to iron out differences, ?or to even pick a new leader.?

That lawmaker said that under such a scenario, he does not believe that either Cantor or the No. 3 House Republican, Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California, would be selected as a new nominee, in part because of the gushing lock-step unity they?ve been emphasizing with Boehner as a leadership ?team.?

In fact, aides to Cantor, who in the past has had an uneasy history with Boehner, have been determined over the past year to snuff out any suggestion of ongoing tension between the two, responding angrily when the idea of a Cantor challenge to Boehner was brought up.

Meanwhile, Price was reported by National Review as someone who might be thinking of putting his name into consideration as an option to Boehner if fiscal-cliff talks are seen by House conservatives as having gone sour. Some had noted that because Price has been mentioned as a potential 2014 primary challenger to Sen. Saxby Chambliss, R-Ga., even a quixotic challenge to Boehner's speakership might score him points with conservatives, despite the cost of such a move in terms of potential retribution from Boehner.

But after a morning of such speculation on Dec. 9, a Price spokesman denied the congressman was running for speaker. ?He is focused on real solutions to get America back on track. Those solutions reside in fundamental principles that embrace individual opportunity and economic freedom,? said the spokesman, Ryan Murphy. Nine days later, Price was named vice chairman of the House Budget Committee.

Hensarling is a darling of House conservatives. But his office on Friday responded to suggestions he might be interested in running for speaker with a statement that, ?The only leadership position Congressman Hensarling plans to hold in the 113th Congress is chairman of the House Financial Services Committee.?

Jordan, the outgoing chairman of the Republican Study Committee, a group of more than 160 House conservatives, is a member who helped lead the charge against Boehner?s Plan B. His office had no comment on speculation he could emerge as a speaker hopeful.

Even before Boehner?s decision to pull his Plan B off the floor on Thursday night, the conservative group American Majority Action had this month launched a campaign to dump Boehner as speaker, seeking to convince House Republicans to vote for someone else on Jan. 3. The Virginia-based group is among those angered by what it sees as Boehner?s softening on tax increases as part of a fiscal-cliff deal. The organization is also upset by Boehner?s recent removal of some conservatives from committee posts.

But after Thursday night?s events, the group said in a statement, Boehner?s leadership has been ?discredited,? adding, ?Our country?s economy deserves better than to be held hostage by Speaker Boehner?s last cling to power.?

?He (Boehner) should save the Republican Party the embarrassment of a public leadership battle and resign,? added Ron Meyer, a spokesman for the group.

But Boehner is projecting a less-than-worried outlook.

?Listen, you?ve all heard me say this, and I?ve told my colleagues this: If you do the right things every day for the right reasons, the right things will happen,? Boehner said at his Friday news conference.

?And while we may have not been able to get the votes last night to avert 99.81 percent of the tax increases I don?t think ? they weren?t taking that out on me. They were dealing with the perception that someone might accuse them of raising taxes,? Boehner said.

Home for the Holidays: When Your Native Country Is the One That ...

Have you had a memorable holiday away from home? Tell us your stories. We?ll post our favorites on IHT Rendezvous during these last weeks of 2012. Here is one:

HERZLIYA, Israel ? Expats know the drill: the annual, biennial, or however frequent, visit to parents ?back home.?

When I wrote an article nearly a decade ago bemoaning being single and having to go on vacation with my parents, my siblings and their families, I didn?t realize how easy I had it. All I needed was a window seat on the long flight and I was content.

Time spent together during these family reunions was always great, if occasionally a bit overwhelming, and I put up with the angst of sometimes having to share a hotel room with young nieces or nephews, and the questions ? whether posed or just hanging out there ? of whether I would ever get married.

Nowadays, these trips entail jockeying for coveted bulkhead seats on the flight, holding a baby on my lap while eating, and waiting for my tray to be cleared before it gets dumped on my lap or on the floor, only for me to later step on a soggy chicken nugget.

?In the afternoons, we descend on the ice-cold community pool where children may be allowed, but toys, inflatables and having fun are all prohibited.?

I?ve become one of those annoying people who continually takes bags down from the overhead luggage compartment, searching for baby formula or the carry-on full of toys my wife insisted we bring, even though the kids always get showered with gifts from doting grandparents, aunts and uncles. And for the ?ber challenge: changing a diaper in the tight confines of an aircraft bathroom. Yes, there are folding diaper changing tables in there (take a look on your next flight), and you better think to close the toilet lid in case something falls or is thrown down when Murphy?s Law ensures it will land in the toilet.

After what seems like an eternity, we land in New York, collect our luggage and rental car and we?re on our way. While all is novel for my young kids, I?ve evidently lived overseas long enough that ?different? has become the norm, and now my native country is the one that at times feels ?foreign.?

My family of five descends on my parents? retirement community in a rental minivan that makes my minivan at home feel like a sub-compact (when Americans use the word ?grand? in a product name, they really mean it!). We arrive to the pastoral setting of manicured lawns, colorful flower beds, an emerald green golf course, and residents who agonizingly drive the posted speed limit.

The first days are marred by jet lag, waking up at 4 a.m., trying not to make too much noise that might wake the grandparents while the kids watch cartoons or play with my childhood toys that my parents have saved for four decades!

We interrupt my parents? quiet breakfasts of what seems like two dozen pills of different shapes and colors with demands for caffeinated coffee, and obstacles like Cheerios thrown on the floor from the borrowed high chair (we hear the familiar crunching noise each time someone steps on one, grinding it into powder). Despite the chaos, dad still manages to read The New York Times while mom copes with the five additional mouths to feed.

My six year old hijacks the television, watching hours of Nickelodeon programming; we log in to Web sites from home and in doing so plant cookies that leave foreign language advertisements popping up on their computer long after we?re gone. We try not to cramp their style too much, remaining wary of the joke about guests being like fish: After three days in the house, they begin to stink.

But we are visiting for far more than three days; we?re there for two weeks, squeezing two years of catching up into this short time. This is the opportunity for my parents to get to know grandchildren who know them mostly from conversations on Skype. They also get to see me in action as a parent, which always elicits a comment or two.

My parents forgo volunteering at the hospital, pool aerobics, playing mahjong and their entire routine. Instead it is two weeks of daily outings, hitting an amusement park, the zoo, a museum with dinosaur bones and a gymboree. In the afternoons, we descend on the ice-cold community pool where children may be allowed, but toys, inflatables and having fun are all prohibited.

I enjoy some of mom?s gooey brownies and other favorites, and they introduce me to exotic foods like sun-dried tomato hummus (incorrectly pronounced hum-iss), gourmet blue corn tortilla chips and black bean veggie burgers. My hungry family cleans out the refrigerator, so it?s back to Costco to stock up. I find it humorous that they are regulars at a warehouse club that sells products in bulk since usually it is just the two of them.

For me, Costco is like Disney World: I wander around bright-eyed at all the amazing prices, wondering if I could fit 96 rolls of super-soft toilet paper into my suitcase.

The time goes quickly, and before we know it we are packing our suitcases to go home. With mixed emotions ? sadness as we bid farewell, and excitement for the return to friends, a new school year and familiar routines ? we leave for our overseas home.

After those family get-togethers back when I was a bachelor, I would savor the tranquility of my unencumbered lifestyle. The roles have reversed; while we all cherish our time together, it is my parents who are probably now relishing the peace and quiet.

on new motherhood at the sosebee family

So Corey decided we were going to have an evening out last night. We went to a Christmas program at a nearby church and then to coffee with friends afterward. Of course I did what I have done every day for the last 6 months when Corey mentions an evening away from home?I dragged my feet and tried to come up with an excuse for why we shouldn?t go. Y?all, motherhood makes you have the strangest and, yes, dare I say it? irrational feelings. Before last night, I?d been away from Mary Jane exactly two other times in the last 6 months. So last night makes a grand total of three times. Every time we talk about leaving her with Corey?s parents for a couple hours, I start feeling guilty. And then I start worrying that something will happen to her and I won?t be there. Oh, and I also do this when we leave MJ in the church nursery. I spend about half the service wondering if she might roll off the changing table, or hit her head trying to leap to her feet, or a hundred other scenarios. I have even considered telling the nursery workers not to bother changing her diaper, because I?m that crazy! And also, I just really adore that little girl. I love being with her. When I put her to bed at night I miss her. But last night, an evening out with my man and my friends, was really good. I probably laughed too hard at things that weren?t that funny, because I don?t get out much, but it was still good. And I really enjoyed the time alone with Corey. And I told him I was really glad we went after all. But I sure did love gathering my baby up in my arms at the end of the night to bring her back home with us. Please tell me I?m not the only crazy mama out here.

Fort Washington shooting follows home invasion

By John Gonzalez

December 18, 2012 - 04:43 am

A man was shot with his family in the home in Fort Washington Tuesday morning as part of a home invasion, police say.

The shooting was reported at 2:30 a.m. Tuesday, when multiple armed suspects made their way into a home in the 9100 block of Loughlan Road with a husband, wife and their 16-year-old daughter.

The husband, who is in his 40s, confronted the armed men and was shot in the back. He is expected to survive. The wife and daughter were not harmed.

The suspects fled with cash and jewelry.

Relatives tell ABC7 that the family has an alarm system and have lived here for about 12 years. Police are canvassing the neighborhood with dogs looking for the suspects.

Celiac 'epidemics' link to infections early in life

Dec. 19, 2012 ? Celiac disease affects about 1% of the population but occasional ?epidemics? have been noticed along with a seasonal variation in number of cases diagnosed. New research published in BioMed Central?s open access journal BMC Pediatrics indicates that repeated infections early in life increases the risk for celiac disease.

A Sweden-based, case controlled, study compared the health history of children diagnosed with celiac disease to similar children without celiac disease. The average age of development of celiac was at 11 months old, with diagnosis four months later. The team from Ume? University and Uppsala University found that having three or more infections (reported by parents) increased risk of celiac disease by 50%. Gastroenteritis on its own increased the risk by 80%.

The highest risk was seen for children who had several infections before they were six months old and who also ate large amounts (compared to small/medium amounts) of gluten, soon after gluten was introduced, and if breastfeeding had stopped before the introduction of gluten to the babies? diet.

Dr Anna Myl?us, who led this study, explained, ?While we do not know if the increased risk is due to a genetic predisposition to both infection and celiac disease, our results highlight the importance of breast feeding in reducing risk of celiac disease, especially? for an infant who has frequent infections.?

Time Management For Direct Sales & Small Business | Jason's Blog

DSHHLogo

Once you get past the college-years, one of the biggest things that ?changes? is that for some reason time actually becomes a finite resource. Every year after that, it gets more and more scarce, and consequently more valuable. Once you get in your 40?s, it actually starts to get scary how fast time flies by.

Somewhere along the way (the earlier the better), it?s a good idea to learn some time management skills, techniques, and habits. The earlier you start with it, the earlier you?ll reap the benefits. And you?ll get better at it the longer you practice your time management skills and you?ll be able to use it in so many areas of your life.?

Remember, as a business owner, you want to be spending your time wisely and productively. Spending a little bit of time each day organizing your thoughts and prioritizing where you spend the rest of your time is an extremely keen investment. So how does one learn to use their time efficiently?

That?s what it?s all about, right? Getting things done. It?s also the appropriately titled book by David Allen which is, in my opinion, the absolute best place to start when it comes to time management. There are tons of other books out there on the subject, and I?ve read several. But I can honestly say that for almost anybody getting started with time management, this is the only book you need. And for those who have different degrees of exposure to time management principles, this will be a concise refresher and you?ll probably pick up something new along the way.?

As a side note, I confess to having 3 physical copies of the book as well as the audiobook of this. (A hard copy for me & one for my wife, plus one that we got because she had misplaced her original copy at one point). I also noticed there are half a dozen summaries of the book available on Amazon, which is crazy since the book is a quick-reading 259 pages (with lots of diagrams and wide spacing to make it flow quickly). I find that I?ll refresh my memory by re-reading GTD ever 2 years or so. I always find something new in it that didn?t stick out previously

The book is broken into 3 key parts:

The Art of Getting Things Done (which covers mastering workflow and project planning)

Practicing Stress-Free Productivity (which covers putting the stuff from part one into functional practice)

The Power of the Key Principles (which cover 3 key principles: The Collection Habit, The Next-Action, and Outcome Focusing)

There?s no way I?m going to summarize the book here as that would provide quite a disservice to my readers. Every small business owner is going to take away different things from GTD that will help them become more productive.

For me, much of it is distilled into the key principles that Allen discusses in the 3rd part of the book.

The Collection Habit

Essentially this means you want to create a system that you can unload your thoughts, ideas, inspirations, to-do items, and projects. Usually this is going to take the form of several lists that you use to get it all written down before you either forget about it (consciously) or forget to do it. It also multiplies your brain power because the lists can be quite detailed and large. That?s how life and business are. But the brain has a tendency to get bogged down or overwhelmed by all those little things floating around in there. Putting it down on paper allows you to tackle lists one item at a time.

What?s The Next Action?

Once you get all those to-do?s and ideas out of the randomness of your brain, you can make a decision on what?s the very next action you should take. This may be a baby step in light of the whole project. But these are the things that move you towards the completion of a project or goal. My wife often gets bogged down with the colossal size of projects we come up with. When she looks at the whole thing, she ends up DOING nothing. It just seems to big to accomplish. But when you refocus on ?What?s the Next Action?? usually, it?s just a single thing. You don?t have to finish the project in one sitting. Or even a day. But it will never finish without completing the next action.

Think of it like this: My project is to create a coffee table. The steps are to: design the coffee table, making plans for it. Figure out how much wood it will take to build it. Figure out what other items may be necessary. Buy the wood. Buy the tools or hardware. Then I?ll make one piece of the table at a time. Then assembly. Then staining. Then finishing and air-dry. The same thing goes for putting together a record month in direct sales. Design flyers. Print flyers. Book parties one-at-a-time. Book fund-raisers. You get the idea.

The Power of Outcome Focusing

If you have a goal in mind, it goes without saying that spending more of your time and effort directed towards achieving that goal will get you there quicker. That?s much easier said than done in real life. Are you actually choosing the best Next Action?to get you where you want to be? Facebook may be a great tool for the direct sales industry, but is what you?re spending your time on actually moving you towards your desired outcome? (Or are you just delaying your real next action step?)

Finally, almost everything about this book is also applicable to the going paperless topic I covered in my last few posts. That?s what started me thinking about the topic. You can combine going paperless and becoming more efficient and effective with your time at the same time and multiply your efficiency.

Question:

How do you currently manage your time and decide what you will do next??
