Gunmen kill local TV journalist in northern Iraq

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials say a local journalist has been shot dead by gunmen who broke into his house in the country's north.

A police officer said Tuesday that the 29-year-old TV presenter, Ghazwan Anas, was having his Iftar ? the evening meal that breaks the dawn-to-dusk fast during the holy month of Ramadan ? when the gunmen broke into the family's home Monday night in the city of Mosul. His mother and wife were wounded in the attack.

A health official confirmed the causalities. Both officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media.

Anas worked for al-Mosul satellite TV channel.

Iraq is ranked among the most dangerous places in the world for journalists, according to the New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists.

How to Use Expired Domain Names

This article has been viewed 12 times.

There are many solutions to earn money online, one interesting method is to acquire expired or dropped domain names which can be either successful domain names that did not continue their contracts or domains which have similar addresses for you to high profit sites. Whenever done judiciously, getting expired domain names can be quite profitable as well as well worth the investment value.

How domain name can certainly get expired?
Domain names are essentially the Website addresses used to house online sites. The number of domains will be virtually unlimited and plenty of companies offer living space on their servers for any low cost that will allow you are not internet access the right to purchase one of the available titles and start a website.
Nevertheless, every day there are plenty of expired domain names in which become available. Many from websites which either never got started or failed miserably, meaning that they are worthy of as much as purchasing one with the new domains. But on occasion there are successful sites which forget to pay his or her fees despite numerous warnings and lose their particular website back to the owners from the server who put it back up for sale. When this happens, purchasing a domain name can be extremely profitable as the first owners of the website may very well pay a hefty fee to get his or her website back rather than need to start over again.
Some ideas the way you use expired domains
Finding expired domain names is really a relatively simple process comprising finding lists of accessible names. However, being aware of which expired domains to obtain is another matter entirely. While the purchase price for almost all domains is pretty cheap, locating the expired one that you can either offer back to the previous operator or turn into a successful website yourself is another subject. That skill involves patience, a little good fortune and the confidence to recognise how you will use this domains once you have them.
For affiliate sites- if you were to develop a good quality site that will featured similar products or even products through the original that you are connected to, this can become a profit generating domain name. Used properly, expired domains can bring about any healthy profit and extended financial reward in case used carefully.
Taking advantage of productive websites that generate a great deal of traffic. For instance, let?s take a fictional internet site called ?widget.com? and you realize that there is an expired name ?widgets.com?. Equally names are very comparable and the expired domain you obtain is only one letter off of. Given the large amount of traffic for ?widget.com? it?s easier than you think to conclude that a component of that traffic will find your website by mistake. There are several options here, although building a cheap rip-off type website will probably get you nowhere fast.
Overall, purchasing domain names intended for re-sale purposes can be a reliable way to earn profit. Notably if you incorporate expired domains in to the mix if they had been formally successful internet websites or have very similar names to very profitable websites.

(AP) ? The "boring golf" Scott Piercy had to play in the Canadian Open left him so excited when he won that he couldn't describe his feelings.

Instead of smashing his driver and firing at flags, Piercy felt he had to play for position on the classic design at Hamilton Golf & Country Club. It's not his favorite brand of golf, though he could not have been more thrilled Sunday when he closed with a 3-under 67 for a one-shot victory.

Perhaps it was only fitting that he ultimately won with a two-putt par from 50 feet below the hole.

With four straight birdies early in the final round to get into the mix, it was a simple par on the 18th hole that allowed Piercy to tie the oldest 72-hole scoring record on the PGA Tour and outlast William McGirt and Robert Garrigus.

"I've been playing good for a while now, and you just need a couple of good breaks here or there," Piercy said. "I felt like I got a couple of good breaks and continued to play solid, and I'm kind of speechless. I'm really excited to be the champion."

McGirt was atop the leaderboard from the third hole, where he rolled in a 10-foot birdie putt. He looked poised playing in the final group the final two days ? his first time in serious contention on tour ? until two late bogeys cost him a chance to win, and likely a shot at playing in his first major in two weeks at the PGA Championship.

With a one-shot lead on the 15th hole, McGirt hammered a 45-foot birdie putt some 15 feet by the cup, and made bogey with his first three-putt of the week. Tied for the lead on the 18th, he hit his approach into a deep bunker right of the green, blasted out to 18 feet and missed the par putt to force a playoff.

"I was just trying to make pars and get into the house," said McGirt, who closed with a 69 for his seventh straight round in the 60s.

Garrigus felt even worse.

He had a one-shot lead going into the final round, but he missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the third hole, and it never got much better. Garrigus missed six putts inside 8 feet, the last one for par on the 16th hole that cost him a share of the lead. He missed a 15-foot birdie putt on the 18th for a 70.

"I should have won this tournament by seven shots. Everybody knows that," Garrigus said. "If I could have just made a putt today."

Self-deprecating as ever, Garrigus referred to the final hole as a "good effort on 18 with my two shots and then lagged it up there for a nice, second-place finish."

Piercy raised eyebrows among so many proud Canadians when he referred to Hamilton ? considered among the best in the Canadian Open rotation ? as "boring golf" because it kept him from taking advantage of his power.

Reminded of that comment, with the silver trophy from golf's third-oldest championship at his side, he smiled.

"That was taken a little out of context," he said. "I like to hit driver a lot, and this golf course I felt took the driver out of my hands. I did say, however, that at the end of the week if the score is good, it is exciting. So I'm pretty excited."

The win was timely in so many ways.

Piercy was headed to the Reno-Tahoe Open next week to defend his first tour title. Now, he is headed to Firestone to play in the $8 million Bridgestone Invitational, his debut in a World Golf Championship. He'll start his season in Kapalua again, and then make plans in April for his first trip down Magnolia Lane for the Masters.

"I've always told myself I'm not going unless I'm in the tournament," Piercy said.

Piercy won while sitting in the clubhouse. Right when it looked like he had lost hope with a bogey on the 14th, he chipped in for birdie on the next hole and hung on for pars. He finished on 17-under 263 to tie the tournament record set by Johnny Palmer in 1952 at St. Charles in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Piercy was preparing for a playoff as Garrigus lined up his putt. He heard the news on the radio before the TV signal showed Garrigus missing.

"Having to birdie the last hole to get in the playoff ... that's all I can ask," Garrigus said. "I just left it a bit short, and I'm sure I'll be thinking about that one."

Piercy ran off four straight birdies starting on the second hole, a streak that concluded with consecutive two-putt birdies. He reached the par-5 fourth hole in two, and then drove the 296-yard fifth hole.

In what amounted to a three-man race on a warm, sunny day at Hamilton, Piercy looked as if he took himself out of the hunt when he ran into trouble off the tee at the 14th, had to play out of the trees and make a 6-foot putt to escape with bogey. But he answered that bogey by chipping in for birdie on the 15th, and then hung on for pars.

McGirt took the outright lead by using a hybrid to chip from behind the ninth green, the ball rolling into the cup for an unlikely birdie. McGirt was steady from there until his three-putt on the 15th, and the approach on the final hole.

The small consolation for McGirt is that he won't have to return to Q-school. His tie for second secures his card for next year, and he is all but assured getting into at least two of the FedEx Cup playoff events.

"I would have loved to have won the golf tournament," McGirt said. "But I played very well all week."

Garrigus might have wanted to break that long putter, which cost him dearly. He missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the third hole, and that summed up his round. He missed from 7 feet for birdie on the fourth and the eighth holes, and then missed from 8 feet on the ninth and badly missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 238-yard 13th after one of his best tee shots of the final round.

But he hung around, and when a 25-foot birdie putt finally fell on the 14th, he mockingly pumped his fist to celebrate. That left him one shot out of the lead, but he gave it back with another miss on his par putt at the 16th.

Advantages of Enrolling Your Child in a Homeschool Academy

More and more parents today choose homeschooling for their children because of its many advantages. If you are planning to find a homeschool academy for your children, it is important to know the benefits of homeschooling first. Read on to learn more about this type of education.

Quality Education

Many parents prefer homeschooling for their children because most public education systems may not provide quality education. Some schools may not have up-to-date textbooks and other learning materials. A good homeschool academy, however, can provide learning using advanced textbook and materials.

When it comes to teacher-to-student ratio, you can also rely on homeschooling. In traditional classroom setting with anywhere from 15 to 35 students in a class, there might be a limited time to give attention to each student. With homeschool programs, your child has a greater chance to get individualized attention. With one-to-one ratio, the teacher can guide them with full attention.

Customized Education

You can rely on the private school curriculum from such academies. Your children can get the education most suited to their needs. When your child requires help on certain subjects or courses, you can find a curriculum that can provide a learning set on their own pace. This way, your child can improve on their weaknesses and focus on special areas of interests.

Character Building

Another benefit is it helps to develop a well-rounded child who has moral character on top of academic excellence. Traditional education may sometimes lack this aspect. As the kids have more time with the family, they can develop strong family relationships. This way, they can acquire more values while sharing and learning new things together.

Focused Learning

Homeschooled kids can have their 100% attention to their studies. Homeschooling programs reduce social distractions and peer pressure that are common in regular school setting. At the same time, feedback on the performance of the children is faster. You can get the results of assignments, quizzes, and exams immediately. This can let you and the teacher know which topics need improvement and what needs to be done to help them learn the lessons more effectively.

Time Management and Flexibility

In addition, homeschoolers can easily adjust their classes in case of illnesses and family emergencies or vacations. You do not have to check school calendars. With your guidance, your children can also set their own schedule. You have more freedom if they find it more comfortable to take exams at night or if you want to take trips in the middle of the week.

Students are not bound by a school schedule as well. There are no time-consuming roll calls or attending to certain discipline problems of other students. Thus, time management is more efficient when the instruction takes place at home.

You can get all these benefits when you have the right private school curriculum. You can check online to know more about an effective private home school and other options for the education of your child.

George Bean writes online guide in choosing the right Homeschool Academy and Private School Curriculum.

Analysis: Buffett's ResCap bid gives him bond upside too

(Reuters) - Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway is bidding on a bankrupt mortgage lender that it may not want, in what some investors and observers view as an effort to make more money on Berkshire's stake in the company's bonds.

Berkshire has made two bids for Residential Capital, the bankrupt unit of Ally Financial that makes loans and collects payments on them. Both bids were topped by Nationstar Mortgage Holdings , which also makes and services loans. An auction for the unit is due to start this fall.

ResCap's parent, Ally Financial, was previously known as General Motors Acceptance Corp and was once the auto lending arm of what is now General Motors Co. .

ResCap was a major subprime lender that became an albatross for GMAC when losses ballooned during the financial crisis. Ally wants to shed ResCap's mortgage liabilities as it seeks to repay government bailouts.

Many believe Buffett will buy ResCap if it has to, but would rather drive the price higher for Nationstar. For one thing, Berkshire Hathaway lacks the licenses needed to make mortgage loans. For another, Buffett often shies away from acquiring financial companies outside of the insurance business.

But Berkshire Hathaway has much to gain from pushing Nationstar to bid more. Berkshire owned more than $900 million of ResCap junior secured debt as of June, representing more than 40 percent of the total outstanding for that class.

Going into the bankruptcy, when Nationstar was bidding $2.4 billion, media reports suggested the secured holders could get 93 cents on the dollar. But the more Nationstar pays, the more money Berkshire Hathaway gets.

In fact, with the higher offer from Nationstar, secured bondholders are expected to be paid back in full, according to one person involved in the restructuring. Even unsecured creditors are likely to make some recovery, the person said.

Berkshire has repeatedly declined comment on its intentions for ResCap, and Buffett's assistant did not return messages for comment on Thursday and Friday.

To outsiders, Buffett's strategy makes perfect sense.

"The worst-case scenario is he owns it and he'll just hold onto it," said Michael Yoshikami, chief executive of Destination Wealth Management, an asset manager in California that has more than $12 million in Berkshire Hathaway stock.

"The best-case scenario is he extracts a higher bid and that helps him on the debt side," Yoshikami said. "I think it's one of his brighter moves."

LICENSING HURDLE

Buffett still likes a good deal, and he invested in financial companies like Bank of America Corp and Goldman Sachs Group when there was money to be made. He is also separately bidding on a loan portfolio that ResCap is selling and is the lead bidder for that asset.

But the licensing hurdle is big. In a court filing in June, a banker advising ResCap said one of the advantages of the Nationstar offer was its support from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac , the government-controlled housing finance providers that own the majority of the loans serviced by ResCap, and that it holds the state licenses needed to run the new assets.

Berkshire executive Ted Weschler, in a June court hearing, conceded the company did not have the housing agency support or state licenses lined up, but said, "We'll do our absolute best to get those approvals."

Many of the court filings have been made by Weschler, an investment manager who joined Berkshire this year to help Buffett run its portfolio.

Both Nationstar and ResCap declined to comment.

ResCap is now selling the loan portfolio and the servicing business as separate entities, though the sale processes are running at the same time.

Bids for both the loans and the servicing platform are due on October 19, and an auction is set for October 23. A bankruptcy court hearing at which the judge would then rule on the sales is set for November 5.

Berkshire is the designated initial bidder for the loan unit with an offer of $1.44 billion. The investment fund Lone Star said in June it was also interested in that unit.

ResCap filed for bankruptcy in May, with more than $5 billion of liabilities and $15 billion of assets.

The case is In re: Residential Capital, U.S. Bankruptcy Court, Southern District of New York, No. 12-12020.

What To Pack For A Cruise : Article Feeder Blog

Going on a cruise is unquestionably an amazing experience. There are numerous items that will definitely make you happy whenever you go on a cruise. Being on a boat that has all the modern luxuries and visiting exotic places make sure that you will truly have a blast. This is the main reason why many people save up for many years in order to be able to have the funds for a trip on a cruise. Due to the hard work which you put in, you really should prepare for your cruise properly. This means packing everything that you need. This ranges from medicines, clothes to great mens shavers just like the 3d electric razor 1250x or the Panasonic ES-LA93-K. Here are a few of the things you should not forget about to bring along when you are on a cruise.

Medicine

For those who have a special condition, it is strongly advised that you pack sufficient medicine for the cruise. Even if you do not need it, it is still better to pack it just safe. For example, if you are diabetic, then you?ve got to bring enough insulin to last you the entire trip. Do not think you can just buy wherever when you run out. Running this risk is not a smart move.

Garments

Just be sure you pack enough clothes for the appropriate weather of your destination. Should your cruise takes you to tropical destinations, you then should pack ample tropical clothes. Shorts, light shirts and sandals are the attire of choice. Just bring an additional pair of pants and winter clothes to put on when you return home.

Guidebook

A big part of a cruise is visiting distinctive countries. So that you can maximize your your travel experience, you must load up a guidebook to read up on the next island you will be visiting. Read the guidebook while you?re in between islands. This will be a great way to pass time and you?ll fully maximize your visit once the cruise reaches the island.

Memory cards

For those who have a camera, it?s highly expected that you?ll be taking a lot of pics in the cruise. So as to make sure that you do not lose any significant record of your experience, you should bring enough memory cards. Each time you fill up a card with pics, you can just load up another card. When you return home, you can evaluate the pics and have a terrific time.

Electric shavers

As a way to look your very best every single day, it is strongly advised that you carry quality mens shavers. This can ensure you will be able to shave your stubble every day and look great through the entire cruise.

These are several of the basic things you need to bring along for a cruise. It?s a good idea to make a check list so that you shouldn?t overlook any of these items. When it comes to mens shavers, you might want to think about taking with you among those mobile units just like the Panasonic ES-LA93 or the Philips Norelco 1250 as these two are lightweight, really convenient, and they?re cordless too.

Here's a Good Reason Why Apple Will Release an iPad Mini [Chart]

This entry needs translation. To help us and submit a translation please click here

I Am Concise takes a look at 'The Reason for the iPad Mini' suggesting that Apple's main motivator for releasing the smaller tablet has to do with its pricing strategy.

The report notes that on a conference call Tim Cook once said, "one thing we'll make sure is that we don't leave a price umbrella for people". Meaning, the company won't price its products high enough to allow competitors to come in underneath it with lower pricing. Unfortunately for Apple this is exactly what's happening with the Kindle Fire and the Nexus 7. Competitors are having a hard time competing with Apple's iPad but have found a way to get market share by releasing slightly smaller and thus cheaper tablets.

Apple has employed three strategies in the past to eliminate price umbrellas on its products: create a new product line, keep selling old hardware, and get someone else to subsidize the product.

What will they do for the iPad? Well, we have already seen Apple apply the methodology of keeping old hardware on the market - they now sell the iPad 2 at $399. But, this isn't really eliminating the pricing umbrella, it just lowers it. In order to eliminate the pricing umbrella Apple needs to serve the $199 to $399 price range. ($199 is the bottom of the market until new technologies emerge, new price models emerge, or a company decides to sell the hardware at a loss to gain market share.)

Take a look at the chart below to see this idea visualized or hit the link for more analysis.

The small aspects that you aren?t telling your plastic surgeon could actually do more damage than you think. Below are examples of three of the most common omissions on medical intake forms that could affect your plastic surgery and patient safety.

These things don?t actually make you a smoker, right? Wrong! For medical purposes in each of these situations you would be considering a smoker.

Nicotine is a vasoconstrictor, meaning nicotine causes your blood vessels to shrink restricting blood flow. It is essential your body has optimal blood flow to the areas treated following your plastic surgery procedure. In addition, smoking (whether cigarettes or marijuana) decreases oxygen content in the blood stream. Decreased blood flow and deficient oxygen levels in the blood impair the body?s natural healing ability and has been known to cause would break down issues that often result in less than flattering scars.

As a plastic surgeon I recommend patients have completely stopped smoking a minimum of four weeks before their surgery and refrain from smoking for at least four-to-six weeks following surgery to prevent negative effects in their healing process.

2. Recreational Drug Use

When patients are using illegal or restricted drugs for recreational purposes, they may fear disclosing this information to their plastic surgeon. However, disclosing this information is incredibly important to ensure your safety as a patient. During your plastic surgery procedure, you are administered anesthesia medications to keep you asleep during the procedure. Combining these medications with a variety of illegal drugs or controlled substances can cause severe reactions or possibly life-threatening shifts in blood pressure leading to a possible stroke, heart attack or even death. In addition, you are typically prescribed medication that you will need to take after your surgery. These medications may also have an adverse reaction when combined with recreational drug use.

In addition to disclosing this information to your plastic surgeon, it is best to avoid recreational drug use for several weeks prior to booking your surgery, as well as after your surgery is complete while your body is healing.

3. Supplements & Non-Prescription Medications

The box or line on the patient intake form that inquires about any medications you are taking is not limited to your prescription medications. Any over-the-counter medication or supplements that you ingest on a regular or semi-regular basis should also be included. Many over-the-counter medications ? such as aspirin or ibuprofen- and herbal supplements, including fish oil, can cause excess bleeding during and after your plastic surgery procedure. Your surgeon can recommend the best plan of action when you disclose these medications further insuring your safety and outcome.

Physicians and plastic surgeons do not ask these questions to invade your privacy or lecture you on your lifestyle. It?s all about patient safety.

Smaller iPhone 5 Dock Could Be Big Hassle For Accessories Owners

For five years, while there have been several iterations of the iPhone and Apple's other iOS devices, they have continued to use the same 30-pin connector. This means that customers have been able to buy iPhone and iPad accessories without worrying about those items becoming antiques as soon as the next device hits the market. But if reports about the next iPhone are correct, Apple will be using a smaller dock on the phone, which could mean a big headache for some consumers.

InformationWeek brings up the topic in a new article, citing several reports and purportedly leaked photos of the iPhone 5 that seem to show a smaller, 19-pin connecter.

This would mean that, barring the use of a dongle, iPhone customers with accessories that use a 30-pin connection for docking purposes would be out of luck when they switch to the new device.

It's possible that Apple could provide such a connector, allowing people to continue using their accessories, but that won't be known until the next iPhone is actually announced.

On the topic of connectors, InformationWeek asks the question we've wondered for a while:

Since Apple has decided to make a change, however, it's puzzling why it would move to another proprietary design instead of using the industry standard microUSB. MicroUSB has become the accepted port for every other cell phone maker on the planet. It would be far better for consumers if Apple went with a standard port rather than its own.

Debt not just academic - Winnipeg Free Press

Student loans, lines of credit and credit cards can provide short-term help as well as long-term grief.

Winnipeg Free Press Archives Student loans, lines of credit and credit cards can provide short-term help as well as long-term grief.

TORONTO -- Launching a career can be tricky when saddled with student debt, but borrowing to finance school may be unavoidable for some students -- and for those who don't qualify for government assistance, the added interest costs can be crippling.

Candace Simms, an English and political science major at Memorial University in St. John's, N.L., says despite working multiple jobs through school, she will have to put off grad school to pay down her $15,000 credit line and $1,000 credit-card debt.

"It's terrifying," says the fifth-year student, who plans to continue on to her master's degree and PhD. "It's going to be years before I can buy a house or start a family."

Simms, who doesn't qualify for government student aid, says she expects between $30,000 and $50,000 of debt by the time she starts her career.

"The current formula for student aid is broken," says Simms, 23. "It takes a black-and-white approach to everything and that's not the case. So many students are in one of those grey areas."

Average tuition in Canada was $5,366 last year, and average student debt at graduation climbed to $18,800 in 2005 -- the latest year for which statistics are available -- from $15,200 a decade earlier.

Many students find themselves turning to credit cards and lines of credit because they aren't eligible for student aid, which is determined using a formula that takes into account how much their parents should be able to contribute.

Financial advisers offer these tips for the cash-strapped student looking for ways to fund school.

?

1. Exhaust your options

Taking on debt from a financial institution should always be your last choice after all other options have failed, says Kurt Rosentreter, a financial adviser with Manulife Securities.

"You can't be 30 years old with $50,000 to $100,000 in student debt and hope to get started on your real-life goals any time soon," said Rosentreter.

"If you're going to take on so much debt that effectively it's going to make the rest of your long-term goals impossible, I think you need to dwell on that, and even contemplate how much school you're going to take."

Consider taking on several part-time jobs or stretching out your degree over a longer period of time to avoid going deep into the red, says Rosentreter.

When possible, choose student aid over a term loan or line of credit from a financial institution because government loans are interest free while you're in school and for six months after you graduate.

Think about borrowing money from family, who can make you sign legal documents if they're worried about repayment.

?

2. Be realistic about your budget

Tom Lumsden, director of education financing at RBC, urges students to create a realistic budget so they understand the full cost of going to school, including living expenses.

Doing so can prevent you from running out of money prematurely.

"Next to your home, this is the biggest financial investment that you're going to make in yourself, so you need to make sure that you do the homework on what you really need," says Lumsden.

"Unexpected things happen, and if you've got a budget and you're prepared you can usually work your way through the rough patch."

Make sure you also look into average salaries and future job prospects in your chosen field of employment, says Rosentreter.

"It's kind of ironic because you're talking about going into debt to get education to get a better job," he says.

"But if you take on so much debt and the education doesn't get you the sweet job you need to repay the debt, you could dig a bigger hole."

?

3. Pick a line of credit over a term loan

A line of credit is more suitable for students because it allows you to draw out money gradually as you need it rather than receiving all the cash in one big chunk that starts accumulating interest immediately.

A student line of credit also allows more flexibility in repaying the money, whereas a term loan has fixed payment dates.

And with a line of credit, you only pay interest on what you borrow, so if you don't withdraw all your money at once you end up saving on interest.

Lumsden suggests working each summer to pay down the line of credit so you graduate with less debt.

?

4. Choose flexibility over low interest rates

The most important feature to look for in a line of credit is flexibility in getting the money and in paying it back, says Rosentreter.

Your repayment terms should extend over many years as your career takes off, says Rosentreter.

"If you have to pay a slightly higher interest rate to get the flexibility you need, I would do that," says Rosentreter.

Sometimes securing your line of credit behind an asset -- your parents' house or an investment account -- can get you a lower interest rate because the lender doesn't take on as much risk, says Rosentreter.

?

5. Be careful with credit cards

While turning to credit cards can be easy when you're in need of quick cash, those cards can have exorbitant interest rates, says Rosentreter.

And piling on the cards as you max each one out can be detrimental to your credit rating, he adds.

"Interest rates on those credit cards can be among the highest in the world," says Rosentreter.

"Unless you're aggressively paying those cards down, you could head towards personal bankruptcy real fast."

How Much Will You Pay to Move? | Katonah Realtor | Bedford New ...

Moving takes its toll: nerves become frayed, children are uprooted from schools and, almost without fail, your favorite furniture is scratched.

It can also take a substantial financial toll.

According to U.S. Census statistics, 19 million American households pack up and move each year. In 2010, Worldwide ERC, the Worldwide Relocation Association, reported the average professional household move cost $12,230.

The dollars and cents that go into those moves vary greatly depending upon a number of factors:

  • Distance of the move
  • Need for packing supplies and services
  • Size/weight of the household being moved
  • Use of professional movers vs. rental truck vs. friends with pickups

Weight matters

When it comes to a professionally handled interstate move ? one that takes you from one state to another ? load weight and distance traveled are the two biggest factors in determining the cost of your relocation.

The weight of your items is actually measured on a scale. Before the move, the empty truck is weighed; you may ask to accompany the driver to the scale during the weigh-in to ensure everything is on the up-and-up. Your mover should provide you with an ?empty weight? receipt or certificate. The truck will be weighed again once it is loaded with your items.

A reputable mover will provide a cost estimate prior to your move. The estimate you receive will only be as good as the information you provide. If you have a shed full of bikes and tools that you failed to mention when the movers did their estimate, the estimated weight of your load won?t be accurate. Likewise, estimates given over the phone are not as accurate as those given in person. Companies can ?guess? what your load will weigh based on an average 1- or 2- or 3-bedroom home, but if your home is minimally furnished or jam-packed with items, the estimate will be off.

Longer move, higher price tag

To get an idea of moving costs, consider these examples:

The fee for moving an average 1,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom apartment (goods weighing 5,500 pounds) from Chicago to Miami would be approximately $4,400 to $4,900. The same 1,400-mile move for a 2,800-square-foot, 4-bedroom household (20,500 pounds) would likely cost $14,600 to $15,600. Same distance, different loads.

For comparison, consider that moving a 1,000-square-foot, 3-bedroom apartment (5,500 pounds, same as above) 200 miles from Chicago to Indianapolis would cost roughly $3,200 to $3,700. Same load, different distance.

Reputable movers use a rate book published by the Household Goods Carriers Bureau. The book, Tariff 400-M, provides estimates for all long-distance moving transactions based on the weight of your belongings and on the distance they are shipped, plus the amount of packing and other services that you require.

Additional costs

Beyond weight and distance, you may find one or more of these fees applied to your move:

  • A transportation surcharge if the moving company pays workers more for working in metropolitan areas, where labor costs are often higher.
  • You may opt to purchase full value protection insurance for your belongings. (Released value coverage is provided by movers at no cost, but protection is minimal ? just 60 cents per pound per article lost or damaged.)
  • Charges for moving heavy items such as automobiles, boats, riding lawnmowers, snowmobiles or pianos.
  • Additional charge for specialists brought in to disconnect gas mains or disassemble/assemble pianos and pool tables.
  • Additional charge if the movers have to walk more than 75 feet from door to truck or need to use stairs or an elevator.
  • Additional charge if your street is too narrow to accommodate the moving truck; movers may need to shuttle your belongings from your home to the truck via a smaller truck.

Be sure to ask your moving company?s sales representative about these add-on costs. Are there things you can do to avoid or reduce them? Working with the city to reserve parking space right outside your door, for instance, may prevent a surcharge.

Remember that the fees you pay to your movers are only a portion of what your total move will cost you. You also must factor in your personal travel and accommodations, on-the-go meals, the cost of new vehicle registration and driver?s license, utility hook-ups, and carpet and drapery installation.

After day of agony, families get tragic confirmation | WTVR.com ...

Posted on: 8:48 am, July 21, 2012, by Nick Dutton, updated on: 09:35am, July 21, 2012

By the CNN Wire Staff

(CNN) ? Grief counselors will be available Saturday to help the bereaved in the Colorado shooting, hours after authorities started the dreadful task of notifying relatives of the victims of the movie theater massacre.

?It took about 19 hours to hear from law enforcement, which was agonizing and I thought just outright cruel to all the victims? families,? said Anita Busch, who said her cousin, Micayla Medek, was among those killed. ?We had been desperately trying to find her.?

Families of the deceased had not been notified until Friday night because an active investigation was under way at the crime scene in Aurora, police said.

Alex Sullivan?s relatives were also among those who got the dreaded news.

?The Sullivan family lost a cherished member of their family,? a representative for the family said in a statement. ?Alex was smart, funny, and above all loved dearly by his friends and family. Today was his 27th birthday. They respectfully ask that the media allow them time to grieve privately.?

While relatives endured a day of anguish Friday, racing between Denver-area hospitals and trying to learn the fate of their loved ones, some already knew the answer.

Aspiring sports reporter Jessica Ghawi was among those killed, her brother Jordan said on his blog, citing the coroner?s office.

Ghawi, in her mid-20s, narrowly escaped another mass shooting in Toronto just last month ? an incident that prompted her to reflect on life on her blog.

?I can?t get this odd feeling out of my chest,? Ghawi wrote in a June 5 post. ?This empty, almost sickening feeling won?t go away. I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court. An odd feeling which led me to go outside and unknowingly out of harm?s way. It?s hard for me to wrap my mind around how a weird feeling saved me from being in the middle of a deadly shooting.?

The Toronto shooting left one person dead and seven others injured.

?I was shown how fragile life was on Saturday. I saw the terror on bystanders? faces. I saw the victims of a senseless crime. I saw lives change,? she wrote at the time. ?I was reminded that we don?t know when or where our time on Earth will end. When or where we will breathe our last breath.?

Some families found relief at the end of an emotional roller coaster.

Patricia Legarreta, who went to the new Batman movie with her fiance, their 4-month-old baby and 4-year-old daughter, tearfully recalled what happened when the shooting took place.

Legarreta, who suffered leg wounds, said she grabbed her son and daughter and headed for the door. ?There was a moment where my daughter tripped. I pulled her up and I was just dragging her and I was just thinking we?ve just got to get out.?

Legarreta and her fiance, Jamie Rohrs, spoke about their ordeal on CNN?s ?Piers Morgan Tonight.?

?I?m trying to get out of the way, but people are falling next to me,? Rohrs said. Then he thought, ?this is it.?

In the chaos, the couple became separated. Rohrs eventually learned Legarreta and their children made it out of the theater.

At the hospital, the couple had an unexpected conversation.

?He had gone to the restroom and came out,? Legarreta said of Rohrs. ?And he just looked at me and he said, ?I know this is not the time and place, but will you marry me?? And I said, ?yes.? Going through 10 minutes of thinking he was dead and I would never see him again, you never want that feeling again.?

The wounded were being treated at five medical centers: the University of Colorado Hospital; Denver Health Medical Center; Children?s Hospital Colorado; Swedish Medical Center and Parker Adventist Hospital.

The youngest of the injured, a 4-month-old boy, was treated and released.

Some victims of the shooting said they cannot believe they survived the hail of gunfire.

Stephen Barton was shot in the neck and recovering in his hospital bed when he described the ?cold and calculated? assault at the Century 16 movie theater.

?I actually thought more people would be dead,? Barton told CNN affiliate KMGH.

U.S. troops were among the injured in the shooting rampage, the Pentagon said Friday.

The Defense Department released a statement saying one sailor was injured and another one, known to have been at the theater, was unaccounted for. Two airmen were wounded in the incident, it said.

And for residents of Aurora, a chaotic and harrowing day ended with a search for solace. The community lit candles and prayed Friday night to honor the victims of the rampage.

CNN?s Carma Hassan, Holly Yan, David Ariosto, Phil Gast, Greg Morrison, Dave Alsup and Audrey Irvine contributed to this report.
