Illinois State University's solar car comes home

NORMAL Ill -- Illinois State University is among eleven colleges and universities being represented in the American Solar Challenge.

The eight day, eight state race features solar powered cars built by college students from across the country.

Wednesday, the racers made a pit stop in Normal.

ISU is the only Illinois school in the race that started in New York on Saturday and will wrap up in St. Paul, Minnesota this weekend.

"There's a lot of comradery, there's a lot of teamwork, there's a lot of sportsmanship among the teams. Because really at the end of the day this is an education process. And so they all really want to see each other get down the road and have a successful event. And yeah, at the end of the day they'd all like to win as well," said American Solar Challenge staff member Gail Lueck.

Among the first teams to arrive in Normal, today, were the University of California at Berkley, the University of Michigan, and Oregon State.

Racers will travel more than 1650 miles powered only on solar energy.
