Politics: EU agenda needs to focus on jobs and growth, Socialist leader says

Portugal?s opposition?leader Socialist?Ant?nio Jos? Seguro has urged Europe to ?wake up to its crisis situation? and place jobs and economic growth at the centre of its agenda.

Seguro?s alert came on Sunday when commenting on Italian Prime Minister Mario Monti?s warning to Germany?that the EU could face a ?confrontation? between North and South.

Europe ?has been chasing its losses for several years and has been asleep in terms of the great decisions? such as more active role for the European Central Bank, Seguro said speaking in Penamacor.

?It is necessary that Europe wakes up, and the Portuguese government along with it?, he added, again defending that Lisbon needed more time to consolidate its accounts, and a less ?exaggerated? dose of austerity.
