Cell phone radiation a "possible" carcinogen

The World Health Organization?s (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has issued a report warning that cell phone radiation is ?possibly carcinogenic to humans.? [1]A? Working Group consisting of 31 scientists from 14 countries concluded that cell phone use carries an increased risk of glioma[2], a malignant type of brain cancer.

The working group, evaluated exposure data, studies of cancer in humans, and studies of cancer performed on animals and other relevant data in reaching its conclusions. Much of the research considered by the group comes from a collection of studies referred to as the Interphone Study; the largest ever study to be conducted on the effects of cell phone radiation.

Findings of the Interphone Study

INTERPHONE evaluated instances of cancer in cell phone users with at least 10 years of exposure from 13 countries. The study evaluated the cell phone usage habits of 2708 people with a case-history of glioma and 2409 people with a case-history of meningioma as well as a matching control group with no case histories of cancer.

The study indicated the potential for an increased risk of glioma, and to a lesser extent meningioma, in users with the highest amount of cumulative call time. Most of those subjects reported usual phone use on the same side of the head as their tumor. The tumors associated with glioma occurred mostly in the temporal lobe. Researchers involved in Interphone cautioned that biases and errors limit the strength of their conclusions which is why the WHO report listed cell phone radiation as ?possibly carcinogenic?.

How to Reduce the Risk

Studies on cell phone radiation show that risk from cell phone radiation is significantly reduced by distance. Experts recommend that you avoid holding the phone to your ear during conversations, a distance of 30 cm is considered to be safest. You can keep your phone at a safe distance by using the speakerphone option, sending text messages instead of talking, or by using a hands free device.

The LIFE BlueTube? Radiation-Free headset is the only headset that can prevent exposure to cell phone radiation because it uses air channels (rather than wires) to conduct sound to your ears. Conventional headsets still conduct small amounts of radiation along their wires. If you are on the phone a lot, and you use a hands free device, the LIFE BlueTube? hands free headset provides the highest level of safety possible with excellent sound quality.

[1] The WHO classifies cancer risk according to this table:

Group Risk Level Example
1 Definitely Carcinogenic Nuclear Radiation
2A Probably Carcinogenic Hexavalent Chromium-6
2B Possibly Carcinogenic Cell Phone Radiation
3 Can?t be Determined Caffeine
4 Probably not Carcinogenic Chocolate

[2] Definition of Glioma

A malignant tumor of neuroepithelial (brain) tissue. This term may be used to describe one of a number of primary neoplasms (tumors) of the brain and spinal cord, including glioblastomas, astrocytomas oligodendrogliomas and ependymomas. Malignant gliomas are the most common primary tumors of the brain.
