The South East Asia Weekly ? NATIONAL WRESTLING CHAMPIONSHIP ...

About 300 wrestlers from 10 wrestling clubs across the country have participated in the National Wrestling Championship Tournament 2011 from 23 to 26 May 2011 at National Stadium in Phnom Penh to seek the wrestling championship for 2011 in Cambodia while at the final stage, the police club controlled the championship this year, and the number of wrestlers increased if comparing to last year.

?This national competition is aiming at selecting the best players for the national tournament and they have capacity to join the international tournament,? Tuy Bunhoeun, Chief of the Modern Sport office of the ministry said that, ?It is also to promote and develop the sport in Cambodia.? The National Wrestling Championship Tournament 2011 was organized by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport in collaboration with the Cambodian Wrestling Federation.

Meas Sarin, Under-Secretary of State for Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport, said that wrestling is a kind of sport which has existed from a long time ago as it is sculpted on the walls of the ancient Angkor Wat temple . ?Peo-ple always take this sport to compete when they had free time especially after harvesting season,? Sarin said, adding that ?Nowadays, Cambodia pays high attention on education, including sport because the sport can make all people healthy, smart, have good morality, solidarity and stay out of drugs and violence in family and society.?

Hok Chheang Kim, Technical Director of the Cambodian Wrestling Federation, said that there were 299 wrestlers including 19 female that come from 10 clubs across Cambodia that have participated in the National Wrestling Championship Tournament 2011. If comparing to last year, the number of wrestlers increased to 240 wrestlers including 11 female wrestlers from nine clubs that participated in the 2010 tournament.

He added that this year competition has 16 subjects and is divided into two categories, including modern wrestling competition and traditional wrestling competition. In modern wrestling, there are three kinds of competition such as free wrestling tournament style for man (51 kg, 54 kg, 60 kg and free weight), free wrestling style tournament for women (48 kg, 51 kg and free weight) and Greek wrestling style for man (55 kg and free weight). For traditional wrestling, there are only two kinds
of competition including man (48 kg, 55 kg, 59 kg, 63 kg, 66 kg and free weight) and woman (50 kg).

The police club was the first winner which received a gold medal with cash award of 1.6 million riel, Vihar Sour club was second place with a silver medal along with cash for 1.2 million riel, Samki Meanchey club was the third winner which received a bronze medal with 800,000 million riel and last winner was traditional wrestling club, which received a bronze medal with 400,000 million riel.
